Has anyone figured out why the filters drip?

The oil filter on my 2014 started to leak slowly shortly after the oil change required warning came on. The dealer told me they can leak when their useable life has been reached. No issues with the replacement so far.

Yeah if your not lubing the seal give that a try. I just dip my finger in the drained oil and smear it on the gasket. If that doesn't work hand tight then 1/4 turn more with filter wrench maybe.

I read it was due to over tightening and is specific to the WK2 SRT. Had it happen 3 or 4 times, even when I warned them

If you don't that, it won't be a small leak ;)

wow, weird seeing this post. I literally noticed oil under my 2014 srt last week, figured out it was coming from the oil filter and I brought it into the dealer. They replaced it under warranty since they just changed the oil in it last month. But I just figured it was a faulty filter. But now I know that its an issue that others are having as well. Just super weird seeing this right after it happened to me. I was going to make a post about it but figured I just got unlucky and there wasn't a need to post considering it probably wouldn't ever happen again. Have had the replacement for a few days now, no problems yet. But will definitely be more aware every time I get my oil changed now.

I have 50k miles on my 2014...never had any problems with leaks...went to change my oil today and sure enough my filter had started leaking. Put some paper under the jeep will see if after the change it is still leaking. (Also had a drip of Red fluid hanging from tranny too (assuming transmission fluid, thats a whole other issue though)

Had the dealer change my oil about three weeks ago, started leaking last night...provided them with my own Mobil 1 and one of the white SRT filters.

This Jeep and I are just not having the best of time together. Really missing my Evo and C300 right about now!

I absolutely agree with you here. However, if you are a picky person, I would thoroughly do research on the model years that you are considering buying, as a leaky car, might be the very least of your issues. Lots of information is available on this site. I have learned throughout the years, that when it comes to vehicles in general, no matter what the price, model or make, you will have to deal with issues. The question is how many, and what are the kind of issues, that you are willing to deal with???

The dealer replaced the filter, topped of the oil and detailed my jeep inside and out; including the undercarriage. But I totally agree that something of this nature is unnerving. I've changed the oil myself in my other cars; pretty much every time they needed changed. I've never had this happen before.

Sucks to hear this happening. My guess would have been a sloppy dealership oil change with residual oil running down the frame. But guess that's not the case. I'd be pissed if my new shit was leaking.

Was able to get mine up on ramps today and it was loose - I was able to spin it tight with my hand then put a filter wrench on it for a snug down. Hopefully that is all it was and not a filter defect of some sort.

I have been changing my own oil on cars and motorcycles for a million years and I have never, ever had one work it's way loose so I am going to guess the dealerships just aren't tightening them properly.

I hope you're right! What filter are you using?

Factory Mopar?? It is whatever the dealership used when they did the oil change ~2 months ago - it appeared to be solid black.

I cleaned the drips off my garage floor and will keep tabs on any additional leaking.

Only reason I had the dealership do it was because I dropped it off for the transmission reflash recall and an alignment so I figured I'd have them do the oil while it was with them.

Gotcha. I bought the white SRT filter. Just trying to figure out if it's a manufacturer issue or an installation issue.

No idea as to the accuracy of this site, but the white one you linked cross references with the black one:

Then see this from an OE parts distributor:

Ah interesting . . . which is why it costs more than double what the black one costs! My friend has an '09 Viper ACR and he always jokes about the "Viper Tax" since everything for a Viper costs a lot more than for other cars.

Just did an oil change about a week ago, as well as both differentials and transfer case. Used the white SRT oil filter. Went outside just to make sure I had no leaks and whatta ya know, a little tiny bit of fresh oil on the oil filter. I didn't use an oil filter wrench to tighten it. It's hand tightened but to the point I can't turn it anymore (and I'm a pretty strong guy). Never had a problem doing that to my other vehicles. Definitely changing oil filters on my next change.

that might b the problem, oil filters are just like spark plugs, finger/hand snug then a 1/8-1/4 turn "ish" by tool...if you tightened by hand as hard as you could it might be too tight for a filter gasket, assuming you had reasonable leverage/grip angles...I am only bringing this up as I have never had a single oil filter leak (lucky I guess) over hundreds personally changed....it's so easy for oil to keep dripping down so the oil you get later even after wiping the filter off appears to b a leak when it was just oil up in a nook you couldn't get to and it dripped after a while...of course a real (new) drip is something different...so did you wipe the block seal surface completely and just before you screwed on the new filter and confirm old gasket was off? did you smear a dab of new oil on the new gasket and then screw on til it stops by hand then a 1/8-1/4 turn by hand (if good grip angle or strap wrench but be careful with those) but not cranked? again, I know this is basic stuff just throwing it out there...

Mine seems to still be dripping oil. Lord knows when I can get back to the dealership but it's nice driving a brand new vehicle with less than 10k miles that leaks oil like my old Rabbit with it's stripped drain plug did.

Oh, and yes the 2014s should be subject to the transmission recall. You can search by VIN.

I expect mine to drip again. The best thing to do would be to change out the filter. From digging around I see a lot of folks use the K&N filter and have had no issues. My guess is that the gasket material in the OEM filters doesn't have enough rubber in it to provide the vibration dampening/movement resistance that's needed to keep it from backing off its threads. That or it's not sturdy enough when tightened properly to not bunch up and allow oil to drop wick by.
