Kinda figured out my running hot issue..... my AC!

This has me COMPLETELY baffled!!! For a couple of months now, my truck has been running hotter than normal. Last year it never went over 200. Now it will run 215 and keep going. If figured it out today to be my freaking AC! On the way to the stereo shop, it was running 215* on the highway. Not normal. I'm having battery issues too. So, I shut off the AC and put the windows down. Sure enough my damn temps went down to their normal 190* and stayed there. WTF?!?! I know running the AC can make a engine run a little hotter but good Lord man! As it sat outside the stereo shop, the temps stayed right on the right mark. I was shocked. It idled for about 15-20 minutes. If the AC was on, it would have been hot as balls after 5 minutes.

So I left the shop and headed home. I cut the AC on and sure enough, it climbed back up. Shut it off, and it went back down. I'm electrically cursed! Anyone got any ideas on this one?

I've been thinking about that but not sure how that affects the AC and Water Pump. If the UDP is causing all this I'll be pretty pissed off but, there have to be others out there not just me. I would think lots of people would be having this issue not just me.

They are the same for both.

I noticed my temps increased slightly wile running the AC. i don't have the temp numbers but usually mine is right above the lowest line and when running the AC it creeps up to almost 1/4 line. I soon as the AC is off for a few minutes--the temps go back down. I don't use my AC near as much as you probably do. Noticed it taking my 2 hr drive camping and was like WTF  Normal?

EDIT: No UD Pulley either

That's normal.... mine at idle will keep climbing until I shut it off. It won't do it with the AC off though. Same while I'm running on the highway. Mine will be a 20* difference. That CAN'T be normal.

My fan settings are LS 178* and HS 188* all across the board. My MS are set at 230* b/c I have found out that our Jeeps don't have a MS at all and didn't want the extra current trying to be passed through. I've already had to replace the fuse block b/c of meltage. Don't want to go down that road again. I read about this a long time ago and decided to implement it.

#11 ·
just try lower the ms setting and see what happens if nothing happens switch it back maybe u got a defected fan

#12 ·
Vin..... the MS setting don't do a damn thing. There is no MS in our fans. What's the point?

#14 ·
No offense but THANK GOD I'm not the only one! Now we just need to figure out what the hell is causing this!!

Don't feel bad harry balls, mine does the same thing but not nearly as bad. I run 190 consistently, but if the AC is on and its hot weather, and I sit there and idle or run at low city-driving speeds, it starts to get hot. As soon as I get on a road of 45mph and cruise, it goes right back down.

If the AC is off, I never have issues regardless of driving conditions.

I've always attributed this to the fact that I have no fan cowling, which reduced the efficiency of the radiator. But, after hearing your story, you are probably "on the edge" becuae of your underdrive pulleys. Same problem, but slightly different causes. I would guess that the problem is that our Jeeps have a radiator/fan combo that just barely pulls off keeping the truck cool. Any changes to this configuration whatsoever put it over its limit.

Be nice if someone made a radiator/fan upgrade for our rigs. Also, anyone running over 500 wheel needs a stand-alone transmission cooler with its own fan.. tranny will get hot on back-to-back 1/4 mile passes at full power.

I know it doesn't come with its own fan, but would this B&M Supercooler Transmission Cooler help reduce some of our elevated tranny temps? I found this on the Hennessey website for about $75. Haven't heard anyone using it yet, though...

maybe you're t-stat is screwed up...

I've thought about that one also. Hell, I've thought of every possible senerio just about.

Dude let me give you my fan settings and give those a try. We've had 105 plus days here in Central Texas for the last 3 weeks and I have not been running hot at all even with the A/C on. One thing to check and do, check your t-stat to make sure the bleeder valve is on top and one thing I have done to keep running cool is I dumped all my coolant at the beginning of the summer and put in 70%distilled water and 30% Mopar coolant the jeep is loving it with the 180 t-stat and my fan settings

#21 ·
The thing that gets me Wade is that these are the same fan settings I ran last summer and the same T-Stat I ran last summer. Temps never went over 195ish last year. There are 2 things I hate with vehicles. One is electrical issues and two is overheating issues. I have freaking BOTH of them. Well, one is kinda fixed now thank God. What are your fan settings? I bet you they are the same as mine!

LS- 178 or 180
HS- 188 or 190

There's no sense in messing with the MS because they don't do a damn thing in our trucks. There is no MS for the fans to go on at.

Just don't use your AC

I didn't think old people in florida got hot

Come up to my house. It made it to 78 today :p

But all kidding a side. Maybe it is something stupid like your bleeder hole got clogged somehow. It's worth a look at the t-stat.

I'm gonna order one tonight. What the hell. They're not that much. I've heard of a few of them going bad from other people posting in the past.

the bleeder is a bypass...

anyway the thing about t-stats.... if they are stuck open you can overheat because you lose the cooling ability (it takes longer to heat up but then you cant cool)... if they are stuck shut... well that is overheating for sure...

#24 ·
School me on the bleeder hole, I replaced my Tstat back when it was considered "THE mod to do" in 2007, lmao! I haven't looked at it since.

#26 ·
Ok, explain to me how a fully open thermostat diminishes the ability of the cooling system to cool.

#27 ·
it loses it's ability to cool... effectively...

it is the same reason why going to an extremely low thermostat can make you overheat...

for instance when i was 16ish i thought it was a great idea to put a lower t-stat in my 65 mustang (young and dumb right)... well i found out in traffic one day once it started to get hot it never slowed down... where when the higher t-stat was in it would climb to a higher number then when the coolant started passing through it would cool better...

you know thermodynamics also man... what gives you a hotter coffee... put the sugar/creamer in your coffee before or after a one hour conference (provided you leave it in your office)...

i prefer PBR personally... the heavier you go the better it will cool :)

Overheating at idle with AC on and normal at cruising.
This is restricted heat echange.
Working AC causes freon pressure and temperature at AC radiator go up. More heat needs more dissipation.
Cruising versus idling causes more air flow through radiators and increase heat dissipation.

Might be a few reasons
1. Clogged AC radiator (cooler) or clogged both AC and main radiators (insects, rust, a kind of popplar(tree) down - sorry, don't know correct english term)

2. Water pump has less preformance than it's needed for decent coolant flow (cavitation, rust or severely changed water pump PRM at idle (UDP?)

3. It could be non optimal coolant mixture (more than 50/50 anteefreeze to water persentage - this has less heat tansfer figures. (minor effect)

Actually with AC on I have a 2-3 degrees less for coolant temp, because radiator fan is blowing constantly.

hey harry... i started doing a minor investagating with our problem that we're having because i am very worried about this overheat $hit. as i notice my fan isnt as strong as it used to be... i always remember my fan sounding like a jet plane when it goes on... and ever since i started getting the overheating problem, my fan seems to be ALOT weaker then it was. i might consider into replacing the fan for the hell of it and see where that goes... go check it out when you get a chance and tell me if im wrong before i go out and get a fan lol

Hey guys I don't know if you guys have experienced this but my temps were running between 215 and 225 degrees. I noticed that Antifreeze was squirting out of my radiator cap all over my engine. The dealer replaced the cap and my temp is now running between 190 and 200 degrees.
