Hey gang - I'm starting to research WK1 SRTs and was hoping to find a sticky "basic info" thread as some forums have.

Looking to absorb all the conventional wisdom on these trucks - best years, common issues, must-do mods or preventative measures.

from what I can gather so far:
-get an oil catch can
-09-10 best years
-they chew through T-stats... Is there a solve for this?
-change transfer case fluid every 10k

I'm not intending to mod it at all. At least that's what I'm telling myself. Planning to overpay for one with low miles and stock. And keep it that way :)

The top radiator hose plastic couplers are prone to failure which can be catastrophic. I would replace it immediately or use the one piece hose as some have done. Ours failed at about 60K. Fortunately the way the piece is constrained by the crazy hose configuration only allowed a slow leak which saved the vehicle (and ruined the trip). Had the hose movement not been stopped by interference the hose would have completely blown off the coupler.

Agreed. Mine has been metal for years now.
These jeeps don’t chew through thermostats either.
If you keep stock fan settings and always use a genuine thermostat you’ll be fine. Use a cheap stat and mess with the fan settings and the trouble begins. I race my Jeep regularly and never have issues.
The transfer cases are pretty bullet proof as well.

I checked my 2008 and it does not have plastic couplers, but it has a plastic elbow, are they problems too?

The plastic elbow is the failure point of the stock hose. On the 3 srt’s I had, none had issues with that elbow. My last ‘08 had the hose replaced for maintenance, and it wasn’t routed right. Ended up getting this bad burning smell. Turns out the hose was flexing & hitting the fan shroud when it heated up. The damn shroud was literally starting to sawzall it’s way through the hose! Anyway I tried to fix it myself, and in the process found some arrow & number markings on the upper frame rail, as well as some underspray they used to cover up some holes further down the rail. These things indicated to me that the jeep had been on a frame puller at one point, therefore I traded it in not soon after.

Yes coupler I refer to is the elbow you refer to. :)
The elbow has very thin raised area on each end to keep the hose from blowing off under pressure. On ours the raised end of the elbow on the thermostat end broke off cleanly allowing the hose then blow off the fitting. Bad design.
