Jeep Thoughts (Updated 12/22)

Jeep Thoughts
by Jack Handy

1st day:
Air conditioned seats!!
A dead pedal!
More room (a 27" iMac now fits comfortably on the back seat floor on its base)
I can finally control my iPhone from the steering wheel!
Love the backup camera, I definitely need it.
I've already accidentally downshifted via the paddle, haven't had occasion to use them yet productively.
Speed is very deceptive, of course I'm comparing a nearly 6yr old daily driver with 67k mi to a brand new one but.... Everything is quite a bit quieter, except the stereo which is amazing with the right source material.
I can't wait to get this guy on a road course, the handling is amazingly better, I knew the limits of the wk1, need to find this one's.
The lack of steering feel, road feel, road noise, all conspire to disconnect me from the experience of driving vs the wk1, definitely will take some getting used to.
Brakes, woah!! The wk1 was great, these are phenomenal. I'm gong to have to be careful when I drive my wife's car now.
A space saver spare AND runflats, excellent!

@350mi
Uh oh where's the fuel filler door release? Oh there it is.
350 miles on a tank, forgot how that feels! $90 for a tank, could forget that easily.
This Eco mode is quickly becoming not my favorite thing. Hope they can improve this with a TSB or maybe a corsa exhaust.
The tech is amazing, big leaps in 6 years.
The fantastic stereo makes me realize how crappy the majority of my iTunes collection is

@550mi
Got to figure out how to launch this thing properly, 13.204 sec 1/4 at the strip isn't bad but I think there was more there, now need to find some twisties.
Another WK2 here, looks good in Silver too.

@750 Miles
Not bad 15.1MPG (700 HWY, 48.75 City, 1.25 Drag Strip)
Ahh there it is! First rim rashed, only 3 to go!

1st Week @845 miles:
What's that, I don't have to be afraid of speed bumps or those things in the parking lot that separate the spaces? Excellent!
Wow, this collision warning is fantastic in the driving rain!
Realizing it's going to be quite a while before this thing feels like that old glove, so many buttons and can't throw it around the same way (YET!)

@1150 miles:
Sport mode, now it feels like the old jeep, every pebble and the painted lines on the road can be felt. Now I can throw it around a bit more. Wish I could just leave it in sport mode most of the time!
Wow so much more paintball gear can fit in here now, used to be just enough room, will have to get some more stuff! First time muddied up.
Nice cold day 13.13 @ the track, my best time until next season at least, and got to race a fellow non-modded wk SRT/8, there's not much straight line difference between stock to stock, I happened to heat his time that run.
Still loving this for long trips but have noticed the seats aren't as cushy as I'd like.

2nd Week @1600 miles:
These HIDs are nice and bright!
The adaptive cruise control and heated steering wheel along with the auto suspension setting and the other creature comforts allow long trips to be almost a joy instead of a chore.
Can't stop thinking of that rear step getting ashy in about a month or two.
Oh yeah there's that Brembo squeal I know all too well starting to rear it's ***** ass.

3rd Week @2500 miles:
Getting used to switching to sport mode when I'm not doing a long highway drive. It's really fun in the corners. Oh yeah what's that I'm missing...........?? Oh its NO AXLE HOP! Nice!!
And there it is #2, two more to go!
Met up with a few more srt peeps and while I love the front the rear exhaust tips just look wrong. Need some 5" chromed tips in place of the "Shrek's ears".
Over half Hwy and a week of stop and go city and 2 trips to the Dragstrip (PB 13.13) getting 14.6 MPG according to EVIC.
Buddy with an '08 WK SRT called after he saw my pic and time slip. He just test drove one at the local dealer and couldn't believe the difference. He said it's so smooth, true!

4 weeks now @3100 miles and still elated, no buyers remorse, which is odd for me, normally the pursuit is more than half the reward.
This thing does seem to combine the best components of the last 2 DD vehicles. Love the thought that I can accelerate at any speed like a madman.
Took a customer out and they were blown away by the whole vehicle and surprised how (relatively) cheap it is when I told them. They were impressed at the cornering and I was trying to be gentle.
Finally let Dad drive it, he was amazed.
Wife likes this so much better when she gets to drive it. She resisted driving the old one every time she could, given her motorcycle racing past I take that as a sign.
Still wish I could make Sport the default mode somehow, not a fan of the ECO mode drone but those are minor gripes.

Lol, you already scratched a rim! C'mon haha.

Nice review so far, keep it coming with the miles!

By the way how are the seats, I think another owner wrote that they suck after > 30 minute drives.

12hrs of driving and I still find the seats quite comfortable, would have to do a side by side with the wk1 to see if there was a significant difference.

Here's my "mini-review" @ 1500 miles:

Pros:

* Acceleration keeps getting better and better. Fastest run: 0-60 in 4.7s; 1/4 mi: 13.17

* Excellent grip on the stock Pirelli's on dry or wet; phenominal brakes

* Excellent all-around handling....handles like a much smaller car...can't believe sometimes I'm driving a 2-ton truck!

* Powerful stereo.....however, clarity and midrange not as good as some of the best I've heard (e.g. Mark Levinson, B&O, etc)

* Head-turning style!....was stopped at a light next to a school bus yesterday and there were about 20 kids taking snap-shots of my car with their phone cameras....hilarious!

Cons:

* The dreaded rattles and squeaks are beginning to pop-up (esp. around the door panels and somewhere in the rear cargo area); also, loud music will sometimes create an annoying buzzing sound somewhere in the car.

* Some of the exterior trim is starting to loosen a little.....i.e. rear bumper chrome strip and front right fender panel molding. Also, I've noticed some bad stitching (i.e. loose threads) in the inside front headliner.

* The media/Nav center is still a pain to use.

* The collision avoidance system sometimes goes wacky....i.e. sounds off even when there is no car in front of me

* Wish there were front parking sensors.....paralell parking can be a real pain.

* Wish the instrument gauges were LED......hard to read the analog gauges sometimes in bright sunlight.

* Seats could be better. Side bolsters should be adjustable and thigh support is inadequate.

I read in the owners manual about the collision avoidance sometimes going off even if nothing is there

Thanks all,

I've had the collision system sound off once when it wasn't needed (a few times when it was). Agree that front parking sensors would be nice.

Weird. I know the solution before was to go with Centric or some other type of pad.
Still is, cured it on my WK1 when I went to different pads, will suffer through this until needs replacement, it only started after that last trip to the track. Guess they are 'broken in' now.
