90mm and stock intake manifold..issues?

2681 Views 25 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  DCSpecial
I was just surfing around the forum and ran into the vender deals. Someone has a 90mm TB deal going on so I was reading to see what kind of questions would come up or see what issues some of the others members had about getting or running it. Well needless to say there was a post saying "you can NOT run a 90mmTB on a stock intake manifold". Really? I'm doing that now. What kinds of issues can/will I run into? Sound I stress about it now? Will any internals be jacked up b/c of this? Also why is that; why can't I run a 90 with a stock intake manifold?

Other than that, where would be a good place to look for a intake manifold. Who on the forum makes or sells them. Also what would a ported one do for me? Better question yet is what should I be looking for in a manifold?

Sorry for being all over the place with the questions but any and all input is appreciated...

You can run it on a stock maniflod you just wont get the added airflow if your intake
opening is only 80mm. You can have your intake machined or there are alot of companies that offer porting.

So no issues as far as something going wrong? I'm just not getting the full potential of the 90 then right?

Yes, actually when I first got my 440 I upgraded to a 90mm on my ported intake.
I had no issues just not running full potential. You have nothing to worry about.
Now that's good news. My next question is about the manifold...can my stock one be ported and workable for the 90? For example can I send it to someone so they can do that? Or is my best bet to get a new one? With all that already done?

What are your other mods and do you have any upgrades planned for the future?
If you dont have any other mods I wouldnt bother for now unless you do other upgrades.

Nothing will go wrong, but if the manifold opening is only 80mm......than only 80mm worth of air is passing into the manifold. Other than looking way better than the stock throttle body.....it probably hasn't done anything for you yet. Send your manifold out to be ported, then you can utilize the extra air that the 90mm TB can pass.

You send your manifold in as a core, pay for the porting job, and they send you a ported manifold in return.

As far as performance mods I have under drive pulley, 90mmTB and CAI. I have a catch can and the t-stat, exhaust, links, the minor things. Also I have a lil boy, fule rails, and nitrous that still need to be put in.
As far as future (with in the next 12 months) I would like to do heads and headers. With in the next 2-3yrs. blower and a new transmission. But all this depends on the hole wedding next yr. and seeing how much I have left.

Ok sounds good. What's the average price on something like this? Guess this is my next homework assignment...

Pricing usually starts around $700-$800, and can go up to like $1500.

Yup, those links I posted were just to show some prices...there are several vendors here that can help you. I myself have a Bwoody gloss black powder coated ported intake manifold with an 85mm opening.

Looking good there Phil!
Ishmael, like Phil and Jose said you can send in your manifold as a core and companies can send you a ported one in return. You should definitely get a 90mm ported intakes manifold for better airflow which can truly make a huge difference. When I ported my manifold from stock to 100mm and shaved out roughly 4lbs and polished the inside, I gained 53HP with the addition of Kooks headers. I added the headers and updated my manifold and throttle body at the same time and saw a phenomenal jump in HP as you can see.
Good info guys. Thanks. I'll take a look at this when I get into the office.

So does the opening have to match your TB? I see you have an 85 would I have to do 90?

I had Modern Muscle port the inlet of an extra manifold that I had up to 90mm for my 90mm TB. They did a very nice job. I already had a Stage 2 port job on the manifold when I bought it, but they can do that as well.
Modern Muscle is that in Oswego?

Naw that is a different Modern Muscle. The one we are talking about is in Virgina.
