Have you seen the February Car And Driver Lightning Lap article that had the 2012 SRT8 VS. the BMW X5 M? The fastest lap the Jeep could do around VIR was 3:17.4 and the X5 M did a 3:11.1....whats up with that? I thought we were king of the hill in the SUV class, how did the X5 embarrass the Jeep so badly? I know the BMW has 85 more HP but that shouldnt equal six seconds around VIR. Has anyone run the first gen Jeep around this track and what was your times, just curious.

Who said Jeep was king of the hill?

King of the hill for COST/performance, but not just performance.

The BMW X5M is $91,705 similarly equipped as a loaded SRT.
WK2 should have been a NA monster with a V10. IMHO

Do you realize how many people on this forum would have lined up for one of those? Lolololol

On that Speed Show last month, the WK2 did a lap on Germany's famous Nurburgring road course in 8.49. I thought that was decent. Does anyone know what the X5M did on that same course?
A Mazdaspeed 3 did it in 8:39.........lolololol

Were these stock times?

And as far as I'm concerned, 6 seconds behind a $100k SUV with an 85hp advantage isn't bad at all.

And the jeep was on a wet track.
Also, you have to realize that 2.5 tons is a lot of weight to move around. During testing, they mentioned that the WK2 was the heaviest vehicle that they put on the course.

I bet if the WK2 was 300-400 lbs lighter, the gap between it and the X5M would be a lot closer.
The X5M flat out is more powerful and faster than the wk2 regardless of price.. Its not a fair battle IMO...

I'd say the battle is fair... Chrysler justified the price by stating that this is the competition.

The refinement is similar.
The track time is also similar. 6 seconds isn't a lot guys...
The price... not so much. Still a bargain.

It is like stepping into the ring with Apollo Creed... you probably won't win, and you're not supposed to, but if you can go the distance and lose with dignity, there is always the sequel.

Exactly. But hey, if you got the money, nothing wrong with the x5M
Don't get me wrong. I love the jeep but if I had money I would go x5m for sure!! I honestly don't think wk2 is better than x5m in anyways but price .

Oh snap......you've gone and done it now.
Wow.......in the rain.

Google "Nurburgring times", you wont believe how fast some average cars are.

I own a Jeep because I can comfortably afford it. I will probably own a WK2 because I can afford that also.........but an X6M or X5M are way to expensive for me........truth be told they are the benchmark in performance suvs.

For $235k Hennesey could build you a jeep that could MAYBE beat the X5
