Here's my experience and take on them: I apologize now to friends and other guys who have purchased valvebody's and don't like Blue Tops... it's meant to be a honest review and not to offend anyone.
I had Blue Tops in my previous stock transmission and I don't get why everyone has such a negative report on them...The installation of these prolonged the life of my transmission till I went to high boost, and I've experienced none of the constant harshness everyone talks about. If you have a good working transmission before the install, and "proper" fluid levels, these work great.
Once you install these in your transmission, reset adaptives, and give it a chance to relearn your driving habits it behaves fine. You will get the occasional "harsh" shift from 2nd to 1st if you stab the gas and have to brake immediately in traffic, its almost like the transmission is catching up, if that makes sense, but any transmission will do this from time to time, but with the added shift pressure it will be more pronounced all the time.
BUT...you do notice they are there when you are driving aggressively!!! Upshifts are quick and firm and downshifts are just as quick and snappy, and the 2nd to 1st shift along with engine braking will push the seatbelt into you chest when braking hard...Its the same with my new SHR Viking now...aggressive when you want it to be, but I thought that the entire point of having an upgraded transmission
I never complained when I had them, nor did my girlfriend. I can't understand why guys don't trust or try a proven Mercedes performance part...but then get advised to pay double for a "modified" valve body that may or may not work at all when you install it...
"BLUE TOPS HAVE NEVER STRANDED SOMEONE OR CAUSED A GOOD WORKING TRANSMISSION TO GO INTO LIMP MODE OR FRY"...do your homework and read some of the horror stories on valve bodies on this forum and other forums where guys are out a lot of money on installation because its taken 2 or 3 VB swaps before they work or function right...This isn't the case all the time but it does happen a lot!
There is a reason why Blue Tops don't last when they go up for sale, why AMG's have them, and why vendors have a hard time keeping them in stock...My advice is do blue tops or save for a fully built transmission. A "credit back" on a VB from a transmission you might never need should not be a selling point, and why would you want a credit back on something that didn't prolong your transmission, and then lead your down a road to buy a certain built transmission later?
If you are planning on big power you can't avoid spending the money on a built transmission. But the Blue Top / VB direction you choose will cause a big difference in the money you spend limping the stocker along, and especially on your end game purchase.
I'm just being honest with nothing to gain from either direction you choose. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BUILD, its a great thread especially since you are building the Jeep yourself!
