A Family in need of your prayers

My son Brandon who is 14 wrestles, and has been for 5 years. Well a teammate of his and not only a teammate but a good friend of Brandon's has become very ill. Brandon and Dominick have wrestled on the same team for 4years and have become very good friends over that time. Dominick is a great kid and one of those kids that everybody likes, well mannered and well behaved, comes from a great loving family. Here is pretty much whats going on, this was posted by his mother on FB

To All My Family & Friends,

On Friday, 1/4, Dominic was taken by ambulance to CDH unresponsive and had 104.9 fever. He was breathing on his own but struggling so they had to put in a breathing tube. He was given paralytics & sedatives because he was agitated and they didn’t want him pulling out the breathing tube. At 10 a.m. Saturday (1/5) morning, all paralytics & sedatives were stopped to let Dominic wake up on his own. Unfortunately that did not happen. After catscans, EEG’s, EKG’s, echocardiograms, and a battery of other tests to try to determine why this happened, we’re still not sure what the cause is. Basically his body shut down and needed to “reboot” itself. Around 11 p.m. Saturday night, Dominic’s doctor was not happy with his kidney function and more importantly, the lack of his liver function. Dominic was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital. We arrived around 3 a.m. From arrival until about 6:30 a.m. we were met by every specialist….cardiology, neurology, kidney, liver, respiratory, etc. All trying to determine the cause. One doctor thought it was malignant hyperthermia, one said heat stroke, but (in my opinion) the neurologist said it best. He said “let’s get Dominic fixed and healthy and out of here and we can argue the diagnosis later J

Monday (1/7) Dominic is fever free yet lays on a cooling blanket at room temperature- should his fever become an issue again- they’re prepared. He continues to sleep and still has his breathing tube, and will most likely have to keep the breathing tube until after he gets a new liver. His liver is failing and is not metabolizing/processing all the paralytics & sedatives for his body to expel them which is the cause for him sleeping. His kidneys aren’t functioning as well as they should be so this afternoon Dominic had a catheter put in his neck and will be on dialysis 24/7 until he gets a new liver. The dialysis is temporary and also to help his body because it’s working so hard to repair his liver and kidneys. They also found a small clot on the side of Dominic’s head, close to his brain. They are going to monitor it carefully but are not really concerned because there is blood flowing all around the clot so nothing is being blocked. They continue to give Dominic plasma and platelets in the hopes that this will help his blood to clot. His enzyme levels keep rising, and that’s not good. Today we also met with the transplant team, liver specialists, surgeons, along with a few others that I can’t recall due to the fact that I am on information overload. Dominic has been put on the national transplant list category 1A…which is the highest of categories. He needs a new liver. So now….we wait.

Dominic has been opening his eyes quite a bit, but only for a second or two at a time. He responds to questions by slightly nodding or shaking his head or squeezing our hands. He really likes when I rub his head and that seems to be the only thing that soothes him when he gets agitated or over stimulated.

Many people have asked us about being a live donor. While we are incredibly grateful for all that have selflessly volunteered, unfortunately Dominic being a solid 200 lb. boy, needs a whole liver.

We are so very grateful & thankful for the incredible outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received and are truly blessed to have each and every one of you in our lives!!!

If you’re ever in the neighborhood….we’re at Lurie Children’s Hospital room 1618. Stop in and say “HI”

Love & Smiles,
Caryn

I can definitely relate to how heart breaking it is to see someone, especially your own son, going through everything he is. It's a helpless feeling knowing there is nothing you can do to "help" your son feel better. I feel for this family and will keep him in my prayers. Like mentioned above, keep us posted.

I am so sorry about your son's friend. This story trully made me sad, you never think that someone so young and full of life could go thru something like this on such early age.
I'll pray to God for him and his family tonight and hope that Dominic gets better soon, I have a 15 year old myself, and it's heart breaking!

I hope god will bless him and he will get better soon! Tough to be in a situation like that but I pray that his young body is strong enough to go through this.

Wish him and all my SRT buddies the best of health in life!
