Doing HID's for fogs and hi beams, daytime running lights, what to do...

Ok, my '10 has the hi beam as daytime running lights, I already have the low beam hid's, how to have the hi, low and fogs all HID, I figured a way.... not 100% legal I think, but a way none the less....

I have a few sets of 6000k lights coming for the fogs and hi beams, I'm switching the fogs to run as daytime running lights instead of the hi beams. Using a Canadian company called Uno

http://www.unohid.com/

When running in the daytime, I'll re-route the daytime signal to the fog lights, they'll have two sources of activation, and won't conflict if done right. Low and hi beam will do nothing until I turn them on, once I do this the fogs will activate as it did stock.

I'm also doing something similar with my '08 King Ranch and my father's '07 Expedition Limited, but they have daytime, hi and low all in the same housing. Daytime lights will be left in the main housing if the low beam is used factory for daytime lights, if the hi beam is restricted and used I'll send the daytime signal to the fogs. Uno has a nice hi/low beam single housing kit, looking forward to it.

My wife's '09 Flex uses the fogs for daytime lights, I'm sure other vehicles do too, banking on the federalies not caring since fogs are being used as daytimne lights, and hid's in a fog housing don't look all that offensive in the day IMO. Got the fogs done on my father's Expy, looks great.
So, how's this sound, full HID's, I'm liking it!

I wouldn't do HID's for your highs. They take some time to properly warm up and will most likely fail prematurely because of flashing them and only keeping them on for short periods of time.

That’s why most OEM cars with HIDs only use them on the lows. And BMW and other manufacturers that have "Bi Xenons" actually just change the angle and pitch of the bulb rather than igniting a 2nd bulb.

Do the fogs. And get some Hoen Xenon match bulbs for your highs. www.hoen-usa.com

Just my .02

Cheers

Thanks for the info Amigo! I do think the hid's fair better for ho/low use though, the bulbs are guaranteed, and Ford has used hid's for hi/low in the Lincoln lineup for years without issue if less since they last longer than halogens, my wife's flex has hi/low hid's, my mustang "did" (stolen 1 1/2 weeks ago). The Halogens used in the fogs were for daytime lighting restricted at a lower output.

I do have the hid's ordered, we'll see how they work.....

It has the factory lows already yes, and you bet it sucks losing my grabber blue toy, loved that thing!!!

The hid's will help big time here, long streteches of highway with no lighting, help see the moose and deer!!! No hideous aftermarket lights hanging off the front either.

Are you going to get the Starscan to turn the fogs on while the hi-beams are on? That'll send the moose and deer running from miles away!

Starscan , what's that? One thing I can easily do is set the fogs to either work with the lows in the way it does now, or to work with the hi beams to aid in vision on clear nights, all that wo0uld take is a central switch under the dash to designate where the signal comes from, with no extra function on the column, for lack of a better word.

trying to find a set of HID bulbs/ballasts that fit the fogs too, but what size are the bulbs and what color should they be to match the stock HID's? 6000k?

Welcome to the forum!! To match the stock hid's I hear 4300k's or 5000k's are closer, I'm doing a 6000k. Got the hi/lows done on my truck, no need to change them to the fogs, they look great on the low beam as daytimers, hopefully the srt8 will result the same.........

Starscan is the dealer's diagnostic tool - there are settings they can manipulate to allow the fogs and hi's to be on at the same time. No switch or wiring needed.
