One of these caught my eye today so I thought I'd look it up. It has a twin turbo 555hp and 0-60 in 4.7 sec. Seems under powered. And the writer considers our Jeeps on the lower end of the spectrum... Check out the last paragraph.......
The X5 M offers the same utility as the regular X5, with the addition of a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 delivering 555 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and peak torque is 501 pound-feet, available between 1, 500 and 5,650 rpm. The crossover can sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, according to the automaker.
Though the logic of building a performance version of a big, heavy and aerodynamically challenged SUV is questionable, that doesn't mean that the X5 M faces a dearth of competition. Far, from it, in fact. Rivals to the BMW include the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and, at the lower end of the price spectrum, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT 8.
I'll still take mine over it but twins would be nice for my ride.

The X5M is definitely a nice ride and has some serious grunt. Same sort of challenges as the SRT8 right now WRT transmission and fuel economy (they're stuck with a 6 speed because their 8 speed won't handle the torque, big gearing needed to give them lots of dig (3.91), mileage is 17mpg on the highway). The author is a bit mixed up, 4.7 is the 0-100kph number, 4.5 is the 0-60mph number.
Nice thing is that motor is the same as in the other "M" cars so there is lots of tuner support out there for it. Easy to get 620-630hp/580 ft/lbs with exhaust and a tune.
Hopefully the next update to the SRT8 will bring us up to power parity with a few more gears to help with the highway cruising without growing again into a huge/heavy beast...
I just wouldn't trade mine in for it. The only thing the BMW has over the WK1 is how nice the interior is. The Jeep... not so much. When I was deciding to buy, it came down to the RR Sport SC and the Jeep. I was looking at the M series but didn't know about the X5. In the end I still would have gone Jeep. Now it's time to get my HP up to par.
How ironic....I literally just ran one on the highway from 70-120 and it was very ugly...I think even a full bolt on jeep could hang with one. Not gonna lie, they are fast but a 450rwhp jeep could hang with one.

There is one here in town I've run a couple of times (40mph roll as well as from a dig) and stock-to-stock (I have a 2010 SRT8) I've got nothing for him (got pulled hard in the roll race to about 120, and he was really opening up distance after 100). His 1/4 mile trap speed is about 5 mph better than mine, so an extra 30 hp isn't going to fix that. More likely I need another 100 hp at least...
That being said I like the SRT8 way better than the X5M from a comfort, usability and price perspective. He's had the same "frequently at the dealer" issues I had with my old M6.
Hopefully SRT will pack an extra 150hp or so into the next version...
I have considered the X5M and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S early models but the problem with big, heavy SUV's is the weight, especially if you are interested in speed. In the Porsche you are looking at 5200-5900 lbs and with the x5m around 5400 lbs curb weight....You need a lot more power to get these vehicles to move and keep going and horsepower can be expensive LOL Both these vehicles have great fit and finish and build quality but their maintenance is very expensive even for the little things especially compared to the jeep, as soon as you open up the hood, it screams..."this is not the do it yourself program" LOL The other problem lies in if you mess up the motor on these rigs they are very expensive to fix. I've been on some of their boards as well and either the people are not very knowledgeable about those rides or they don't like sharing detailed modding and maintenance information with you readily. Some boards questions don't get answered for weeks, if at all. The other problem that concerns me is that sometimes those manufacturers cheap out in the wrong areas. I remember it was the valley coolant lines being made of plastic in a $130,000 SUV instead of using a stronger material and in some engines that have been mismanufactured by having scored cylinder walls like in the Porsche. Having all these great features such as raising and lowering ride height by the turn of a knob is great, but any malfunctions out of warranty can be very very expensive!
