When I replaced my t-stat I ran it without a radiator cap and kept filling as the level would drop. Did for 5-10 min then capped it. Still had to add a little to the overflow tank later to top it off.

^^^ exactly this. run it with the rad cap off for a few min to make sure the level doesnt drop. Turn your heater on full blast as well so it flows thru your heater hoses and heater core and gets any air out. Top off and go
