: Get a Third Key!!

As we all know, our factory remote control keys are expensive. At a dealer, list price is $170.00, plus cutting and programming. However, I cannot more strongly encourage you to obtain a third key while you have the existing two you received upon delivery.

If you have two working keys, you can easily obtain a third key and program it yourself. If you lose one of the two original keys, when you get the new second key, you MUST go to the dealer to have it programmed by them. I have never had to do this, but I am confident that it will not be free, probably anywhere between $50 and $100.

I previously purchased a factory key blank on Ebay for my 300C, had it cut, and programmed it myself. All went smoothly. I have purchased a factory key blank for our GC SRT8, had it cut, and successfully programmed it as well.

I was able to get both of the remote key blanks for $50.00 or less. It cost me $5.00 to have it cut by a locksmith.

Here is a link to an Ebay auction for an applicable key blank. It happens to be the same seller I bought mine from. I don't endorse any Ebay sellers, but just provide it as a reference: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-06-JEEP-GRAND-CHEROKEE-KEY-TRANSPONDER-REMOTE-NEW_W0QQitemZ180024661028QQihZ008QQcategoryZ40016Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Save yourself some grief and a potential headache down the line and get a third key. At the very least, if your remote quits (I've had this happen on another car when the keys went through the wash), you will have another two keys to use.

Thats an excellent recommendation that everyone should follow.

You can also get a key without the built in keyless entry transmitter, so the key is much smaller (with an oval shaped head, exactly like the factory key from a WJ). Thats what I bought after adding a remote start/alarm, because having the factory keyless entry was redundant, and it was only 10 or 15 bucks off ebay. Plus you can take this key to the beach or on a boat without fear of it getting damaged.

You see, if you're in a situation like this (http://images4.fotki.com/v51/photos/4/43063/392916/SD100402-vi.jpg) you don't want to be worried about getting your key wet :)

What is the process for programming a new key? If you have both of your originals, you can progam the new one yourself. But, if you only have one of the originals, you cant?

I believe it is explained in the owners manual. ;)

I only have 1 key, but I refuse to spend $200+ for a new key plus $100 to program. From what they told me, if I had 2 keys, I can program a 3rd myself, but if you only have 1, the dealer needs to do it. I'm sure it's just a liability to cover Chrysler's ass and avoid a lawsuit.

Thats it. If you have 2, you can program. If you have one, you need the dealer. ANd it is in the manual, the how to.

I have seen stories of it costing 150 for the key and having the dealer pgm it.

From the owners manual:

Customer Key Programming

You can program new keys to the system if you have two
valid keys by doing the following:

1. Cut the additional Sentry Key Transponder blank(s) to
match the ignition switch lock cylinder key code.
2. Insert the first valid key into the ignition switch and
turn the ignition switch ON for at least 3 seconds but no
longer than 15 seconds. Turn the ignition switch OFF and
remove the first key.
3. Insert the second valid key and turn the ignition
switch ON within 15 seconds. After ten seconds, a chime
will sound and the SKIM indicator light will begin to
flash. Turn the ignition switch OFF and remove the
second key.
4. Insert a blank Sentry Key into the ignition switch and
turn the ignition switch ON within 60 seconds. After 10
seconds, a single chime will sound. The SKIM indicator
light will stop flashing, turn on for 3 seconds; then turn
off.
The new Sentry Key has been programmed. Repeat this
process to program up to a total of 8 keys.

Hope this helps.;)
