: Jeep SRT stereo upgrade?
Mommy Wagon 08-21-2006, 05:08 PM The factory stereo in a Jeep SRT8, with the Navagation and "Video Entertainment System" has an amplifier in the back, and has an output of 2 ohms correct?
Now, I am a little rusty here, but, wouldn't a 4 ohm speaker still work? There would just be less wattage to the voice coil right? Therefore be a little quieter?
WebDiligence 08-21-2006, 07:58 PM Where did you get the spec of 2 ohms from? Yes you are correct about using 4 Ohm Speakers. I am sure you can find 2 ohm components if you are correct about the system being 2 ohms. I am curious now...
SilverSRT8 08-21-2006, 08:46 PM idealrides posted something abou using 2 ohms since the factory stereo was meant for 2 ohms
idealrides 08-21-2006, 09:16 PM yep I measured them to be sure, they are 2 ohms. Most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms, but I found perfect replacements in the Infinity Kappa line that are 2 ohms.
Theoretically speaking if you used 4 ohm speakers then you'd be under-utilizing the amplifier's power output by up to 50%.

Mommy Wagon 08-22-2006, 06:44 AM How many car audio manufacturers build 2-ohm components?
Has anyone replaced the factory speakers using the factory amp with great success? Meaning a night and day difference in the quality of sound.
Has anyone intergrated a second amp and sub into the factory Jeep SRT8 audio system?

I replaced the (2) 3.5's up front with Memphis Audio 3.5's with tweeters. I think they were 4 ohms, but now I am glad, as it almost doubled the amount of highs coming from the front of the car. I will eventually replace the doors with 2 ohm component sets. The front (2) 3.5's are right in your face so I honestly think 4 ohms work best as replacements there...
MNBob 08-22-2006, 09:19 AM Some manufacturers are not even giving this spec any more, so maybe it is not that important. I ordered the same Memphis Audio 3.5's as WebDiligence, but I could not find any ohm rating at the vendor site or from the manufacturers site.
I also ordered some new mid-bass units for the front doors that were 4 ohm. I am going on vacation, but will let everyone know how they work out when I get back and install them.

Who said that the Jeep uses 2 ohm speakers?
MNBob 08-22-2006, 12:53 PM idealrides says he measured them above.
Also, you can read his statement in this link:
PLEASE READ: Jeep SRT8 Performance Manual (http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=899)
At any rate, I am going to try the 4 ohms. If anybody else has tried them they could also add their experience.
lincoln 08-23-2006, 12:07 PM 4 ohm speakers on a 2 ohm = OK, 2 ohm on 4 ohm amp = not OK. The loss from going to a 4ohm speaker on 2 ohm amp is 3dB. 3db is audible but barely. What you gain is a higher dampening factor and the potential for better sound quality outweighs the loss of 3db. I think the stock stereo is barely tolerable from an audiophile (and ex-Iasca SQ judge) standpoint but what stock system is tolerable to the few of us that want to hear the recording as the sound engineer intended it to sound.
radduc 08-23-2006, 12:23 PM Aggree 100% the stock system in the 06 really BLOWS!! They did such a good job on the jeep and to drop the ball on the stero, well it's typical American car building.they could have done better with the inside as well, but I bought this for the performance. The Jeep is the 2nd American car I have ever owned.Had about 40 european cars,I always hated american cars,So it says alot for the Jeep, the fact that I bought one.
Mommy Wagon 08-23-2006, 03:47 PM OK, I thought I was just too fussy! Thanks guys, I realize I am not alone ;)
When I had ordered my Magnum SRT8, I made sure that it had the Kicker stereo option checked off.............................. I know it's only Kicker, but, I had expected much more than what it actually is. I now NEED to replace the sub and amp, as they are just OK, and the box rattles. The rest of the speakers will do for now.
My wife's Jeep SRT8, isn't even all that tolerable, spending a few thousand on a factory stereo, I would expect more than what the output is. I like the highest of the highs, the lowest of the lows, and a balance in frequencies.
I think usually the average I spend per vehicle is about $6,000.00 on audio equipment. Not that I would ever expect a factory system to outperform the even modest of the aftermarket. Never been all that into the video side until a friend of mine told me he insists that all of his vehicles must have front and rear video, it's grown on me, and now I too want it, hence ordering my wife's Jeep with the VES package. All in hoping for a better sounding system, with rear video and front video capabilities (after moding).
It's too bad that we can't order our SRTs without any audio/video equipment, for the 6,000 I would spend I could have had video, audio, and an Ipod compatible player that would have a remote. Then I wouldn't feel so bad about not having steering wheel mounted controls!
That's why for now just some speaker upgrades and an addition of a sub is in order in my wife's Jeep.
voyagerx 08-10-2009, 12:49 PM What Kappas have you guys gone with? It looks like they are all above the 3 1/16" mounting depth. I would like to use the Kappas instead if the Reference series, but not if it won't be a direct fit. Does anybody have any experience with these?
Thanks!
