: Question for Don
dodgeboy16 11-01-2007, 11:04 PM To Don or anyone who may know the answer to my Question.
How will the cutting of the 3rd. shift at the Jefferson North Assy. Plant affect the production of GCSRT8s.
I ordered a GCSRT8 in early Oct. and was told by Chrysler ( not the Dealer ) that the GCSRT8 had a confirmed Build Date of Nov. 2nd. I called Chrysler on Oct 30th. to see if everything was on track for Nov. 2nd. All I got was a run around and that the vehicle was in D status ( which means it was OKed for production ) well hell this thing was in D Status the 2nd week of Oct. I talked to everyone I could and the answer was always the same. Noboby new anything, I then had the Dealer try and find out, they could do no better. Then late last night I find out about the BIG CUT-BACKS and the cutting of the 3rd. Shift at Jeff. North, then the vague answers started to make sense. Any Info. would help.

jim383 11-02-2007, 07:01 AM From d status it then goes to d1 status which means it at the starting gate to be built. It can stay in the status as long as they have to till there building turn comes up. It could be color, equipment, parts or anything that can delay it.
shodanusmc 11-02-2007, 07:51 AM Sometimes QUALITY has been known to suffer with Cutbacks. Check your vehicle in the light real close...in the light when it arrives.
Razorecko 11-02-2007, 11:06 AM Initial production will suffer mostly production time...But someone mentioned before and I will have to agree that once organized I'm sure a 2shift cycle will improve quality and not actually decrease it. It will also allow chrysler/cerebrus to narrow down shifts/groups that are not keeping up to par on quality standards much quicker than digging through 3 shifts. And as bad as it sounds it might actually get those lazy asses in higher gear and realize that if they dont do their job right & pay some attention to detail that their @ss might get the AXE. I'm pretty tired of all of us paying for their hangover mistakes.
DABEARS1 11-02-2007, 04:28 PM I shouldn't affect your delivery date at all, since the shift won't be eliminated till next year... But since they are cutting models, one has to wonder if they drop the srt line completely??? Maybe we will never see the 6.4

I doubt it w/out the SRT lineup chrysler would be dead brand auto manufacturer like KIA.
DABEARS1 11-02-2007, 09:46 PM They are going hybrid with the durango and aspen. And with the 3rd shift gone in brampton, and at jefferson (the gas guzzler plants) seems like it's the next step. I don't want it to happen trust me, but 1 week after the uaw signs the contract the company makes these cuts. They didn't tell the union their plans or else the contract would of never got signed....
Razorecko 11-02-2007, 09:53 PM Once chrysler cuts a profit for cerebrus they will take it apart like a lego project and sell off the pieces.

Maybe I'm wrong but the 12,000 cutback is A.S.A.P. The 13,000 one is next year and next year starts in Jan., just 8 weeks away.

phenwick 11-02-2007, 11:35 PM Dodgeboy16,
If you have a VIN send a pm to resumespeed on this board. He can usually help you track your vehicle after it hits D1. I think the line went down for a week recently due to inventory backup.
a990dna 11-03-2007, 12:21 AM I've mentioned this in another thread.. personally, I believe the cuts at Chrysler will be a good thing. This decision must have been in the planning stages for several months .. and extensive financial analysis and forecasting to establish 2008 volume and budget numbers -- the UAW is starting to lose their grip with $15 start wages as opposed to $28.
Who on earth pays a non-skilled worker $28 to start? We have some of the highest cost of living conditions in the nation and our start wages are around $8 for non-skilled workers.
I think the cuts and future directions are spot on ..
Discontinuing the Magnum was a smart move.. who needs a SRT station wagon when you can have a Grand Cherokee SRT? .. its not a Dodge but it seems like overlap to me.
The Pacifica is a dog .. from the get-go I predicted this one would see an early demise.
Who buys convertibles anymore? ... and if you did, would it be a PT Cruiser?
As far as the concern for shift reductions on the Grand Cherokee.. don't be. There's a thing called takt time.. it's used extensively at Toyota and is meant to match the rate of production with sales... in essence, a continuous flow is more productive and results in higher quality products.
DABEARS1 11-03-2007, 05:07 AM Yeah sure it's a good thing when 10,000 people lose their jobs.... Maybe in southern cal you can pay mexicans $8/hour but have you worked in an auto plant. Have you climbed in and out of a minivan every 42 seconds for 500 times a day? No one in their right mind would do that for $8/hour.... I'd rather deliver pizza and get tips....
The pacifica was a good car, all black with chrome rims, nice right out of the factory. Do you know what we are building once the pacifica is done??
The new VW minivan!! Yes we are building the new VW van in a chrysler plant.... Running pilots now...
St. Louis loses a shift in Jan
Brampton loses a shift in Feb
Newark closes and other shift loses later in they year, Belvedere etc...
a990dna 11-03-2007, 09:11 AM No need to elaborate on the UAW wage issues.. especially when there are thousands of U.S. workers employed at Toyota.. and other foreign based competitors.
As far as VW taking over the Chrysler buildings... ever hear of the Edsel? .. yea, it was a good car was well, available in black, shiney wheels.. one problem, Ford couldn't give them away -- and people lost their jobs. This is capitalism and globalization at work, expect to see more of this throughout the U.S as demand for domestic vehicles dwindle.
On topic regarding Jeep...
I would hope there are skilled employees assembling SRTs -- recent threads on poor quality suggest not. I'm confident these are isloated cases.. otherwise, I wouldn't remotely consider spending my hard earned $45K on any Chrysler products.
Quality is essential to sustaining future sales -- proven fact. Yes, people actually go to the internet and read threads about poor workmanship. Get it right the first time at the factory. Chrysler sales are lost before customers set foot on dealer lots. May want to send that message to your fellow employees -- better yet, post it on the bulletin board in the lunch rooms.
Believe me, I'm on your side... and it's not too late to turn this around and help move Chrysler to the forefront. :)
DABEARS1 11-08-2007, 11:43 AM Agreed! The new minivan will win the JD power award this year, the launch year... Now thats impressive....
firestarter 11-08-2007, 01:37 PM Also, the Dollar will keep tanking and force European companies to exclusively manufacture in the US....with US citizens. Look at what the French President said to Congress the other day. They are pissed at the US but it is China and OPEC that are causing the problems. The US is only doing what it can to combat the illegal Cartel of OPEC and the non-free market bull**** of China.
