: Grinding sound from rear end?

Just got my Jeep... love it! But I often hear and feel some grinding when I corner and get on it... Reminds me of really bad bearings or metal on metal on an old rotor. Really bugs me.

Its been like this since day 1, last week. If I take traction control off it really gets pronounced... then gets smooth... the rough... comes and goes. I can't imagine this is normal, but if any of you are familiar with this... mabye the transfer case doing its thing with the computer, etc... then please let me know! Its bugging me like crazy to think my Jeep was messed up from the factory... and if this is normal, I can't believe people aren't complaining about it. All I found on the board were comments about exhaust TSBs and rattles, but nothing like this.

Thanks,

Loren

The one thing I noticed with my rear is A LOT of noise coming from it,
but NO grinding or metal sounds. Mine sounds like the typical road noise you would get when putting big ass off road tires on an old 4wd Truck. My SRT8 is more a weekend crusier and still only has under 2K on it so like you it's BRAND NEW. What funny about it is my 99 Stang GT has a very simular noise and I took it yesterday for the install of 4.10 gears and they found my carrier bearings were shot, hence making the noise. Makes me wonder if the SRT8 has something wrong too ???

Let us know what you find out, and GOOD LUCK (Thumbs Up)

When I first picked up my Jeep, I experienced the same thing.

I took it back to the dealer and let him know that there was a tsb on this issue (learned from doing a search on this board). Apparently, there's a bolt in the transmission that extends a bit farther than it should. Under heavy acceleration, it touches the exhaust or something.

The tsb calls for some washers to shorten the length of the bolt. After I had this done, there's no more rattle/grind.

Hope this helps,

-Ray

Thanks... I'm taking it in and getting to the bottom of this!

There is a TSB out about this problem if you take it to a dealer. It definitely helped, but they said it would get better as I put more miles on it.

You guys are forgetting one thing...the transfer case. The fact is that you have a transfer case with an electronically modulated clutch managing torque transfer to the front wheels. The "grinding" you are hearing is simply the t-case modulating the clutch to the front wheels during load. When you are turning the vehicle, the differential IN THE TRANSFER CASE needs to transmit torque to the front wheels to manage wheel slip. However, because of the differential speed between front and rear wheels, the clutch has to modulated to avoid getting wheel hop (like in a Jeep when you are in Low Range). The noise is a "stick/slip" phenonmenon. I doubt there's anything wrong w/ your truck...just the nature of the beast.
