I know the manual says 7 Quarts of Mobil1 0 w40. BUT I put 6 3/4 yesterday and let it sit overnite, and to my suprise this morning I was way above the high line, So I had to lift it back up and drain about 1/2 quart give or take a smidge, now I am between the safe line. Please dont ask me if the car was level, yes it was. I drained the oil from the oil plug and the oil filter after I removed it. I let it drain for well over a half hour or so. What am I getting at? Obviously when he car was built and with no oil in the engine it took 7 quarts, but after that there is NO way to drain all the oil so when you change the oil you will overfill it if you put 7 quarts. My advice is stop at 5 or 6 quarts, see where you are at on the dipstick and take it from there. This is the exact reason I dont use jiffey lube or the dealer for oil changes they go by the book and they will overfill you on oil.

Don't take this the wrong way but you didn't say whether you started the engine after changing the oil. If it's a stupid ?, please disregard.

I started the engine got the oil and coolant to operating temps, When the oil was pulled it was 220 degrees, I put 5 quarts started the engine for 20 seconds filled the filter up and topped off from there and started checking the dipstick, and this is my second oil change and the first one was the same. 7 quarts is a dry fill from the factory remember they never had to drain they only tell us what it took dry, which is 7 quarts. Basically dont just drop 7 quarts in the engine if you DIY stop at 6 and see where you are on the dipstick.

Thanks. Good info. I'm about 200 miles away from my 1st DIY change.
By the way, Advance Autoparts has Mobil 1 for $4.77/ qt for all weights until 8/27/06.

Not bad about what it cost me around here in NYC.

What are the detriments of overfilling?

I will take mine to the dealership because I believe oil changes are covered under the warranty.

and when they install the drain bolt and filter at 1 million lbs on torque or screw something else up you'll start doing it yourself. other than major warranty work that has to be done at a dealer i refuse to let anyone touch my cars. good luck with yours.

The manual is very specific about where he oil should be on the dipstick, as for dealer warranty, if you think some great tech is giving your baby the oil change your in for a rude awakening, your getting some kid who just started that knows nothing and opens the mopar book sees that it takes 7 quarts, drains your oil, when its down to a slow trickle he installs the plug drops 7 quarts changes the filter and checks the dipstick. And does not have a care when he sees the oil is almost 1/4 of an inch above the 2nd high line. Oh well next. My initial fill from the factory was right at the top safe line, and that is where I will continue to fill my oil too.
