Does any1 know why DC has not offered HIDs in the GC SRT8?

Because it is not offered in any other Grand Cherokees. The 300C SRT-8 only offers it because it is an option on the non-SRT 300C. The Charger and Magnum SRT models do not have this option.

Does any1 know why DC has not offered HIDs in the GC SRT8?The low beam reflectors in the GC SRT-8 have a very sharp cut-off, similar to that of a projector's beam, & work very well with an aftermarket 9006 HID retrofit. No glare to oncoming traffic, excellent beam pattern & much improved night vision. With these installed the lighting is as good as on my E46 M3's factory projector HIDs, which is excellent by the way. As a bonus this in no way has affected my Smart Beam high beam operation. One side note however: if you choose to go this route you'll need to use relays & not one of the direct hook up kits that clip the ballast directly into the existing harness. I tried this to begin with as it takes ZERO wiring but the HID's would flicker on & off for 2-3 seconds occasionally when cutting them off. With a simple relay wired in breaking the 12V+ feeding the ballast the problem was gone.

Thanks for the info

Any pics of them ARH?

Any pics of them ARH?No, I do E-Mail & some forum posting but posting pictures are beyond my computer expertise I'm afraid, LOL.

If anyone is looking to do this, I highly recommend this kit: http://hidexpert.com/product9006.html
The price is very reasonable for this top quality hardware. Basically it's the best thing you can put in the stock headlights, short of a full $1000+ projector retrofit. Make sure to specify D2R bulbs, not D2S.

this is a comparison of stock to the D2R system I mentioned. Notice the xenon side is higher than it should be, this is because these headlights are not designed for a xenon capsule. After installation I re-aimed them properly.

this is the xenon lowbeam next to an 80 watt "fake ID" highbeam:

and this is the fake ID compared to stock:

This install is just temporary until I get my retrofitted headlights, so I didn't waste time making nice mounting brackets for the ballasts, I just wedged them in, the driver's side fit *perfectly* inside the battery bracket frame:

http://images16.fotki.com/v277/photos/4/43063/3148071/DSC01868-vi.jpg

and the passenger side wedged in tight under the headlight:

Don't forget... this in NOT the way to secure ballasts properly!
AT LEAST use zip ties and velcro, the wedgie method is not recommended.

So, back to this.

I would like to install a HI/LOW HID kit in, I was wondering how many others have done it with great success, and if the plug and play set up had worked for anyone?

I am not scared of modifying anything electrical, especially as small as adding a relay. I just don't want an issue of warranty coverage if something does occur, at least I can still opt to replace the HID kit with factory bulbs.

Any other pics available?

What Kelvin ratings did you guys use?

It would be cool to have HIDs from the factory, but the fed requires either a self-leveling suspension or self-leveling lights for factory HID systems. I suppose the engineering cost of adding them to the GC is prohibitive since they weren't originally designed for them.

I hear you, man! I run the Sylvania Slver Stars in my Lightning, and am very pleased with them, for what thy are. Still, HIDs would be the bomb!!! My '06 645Ci has them and those suckers are BRIGHT!!!!

I posted this elsewhere, but it is very important if you are considering a HID conversion.

Ok I am an actual electrical engineer and here is my two cents:

Flickers of the HID bulbs are caused by a low current 12v signal that the vehicle puts through the bulb even when the lights are completely off. This will help the ECM recognize when a bulb is burnt out. To test this you can hook back up one standard bulb on one side and leave the HID on the other. With the lights shut off, the standard bulb will not light, but the HID may flicker occasionally. This is bad, very very bad, for the HID system! It will burn it out in months.

I think a relay will fix the problem, I am not sure if each side needs a relay, but thats how I am going to wire it. To accomplish this, from the stock headlight wiring you have two wires, one of these will go to pin 86 on the relay and the other to pin 85. Doesn't matter which goes where because this is a simple coil that drives the relay and it doesn't care. Next, run new power cables from the battery to pin 87 on the relay (Make sure to fuse this close to the battery 15 or 20 amps per side will be plenty and will prevent a fire). Pin 30 will now go to the + supply on your HID system, usually red or anything but black, but check the wiring diagram first!! Finally connect the - of the HID system to a solid vehicle ground. I would recomend using at least a #12 wire for everything to ensure you have enough supply current w/o heating.

This should trick the system into thinking there is a good bulb, the relay's coil will provide about 100ohms of resistance, not as low as a real headlight, but better than the high impedence of looking into a HID ballast.

It would be wise to disable the AUTO headlight mode, because this mode turns the lights on and off throughout the day and also can keep them on while the vehicle is starting. All of these conditions are bad for HID ballasts.

Oh also if you have a Canadian version or any other version that has been modified to use daytime running lamps, this must be disabled. This involves a quick free trip to the dealer to set the correct country code in the ecm. If the DRL circuitry is activated, it provides 5-9 volts to the lamps during the day which would mean dim driving lights, but with a HID system it means a hot and burnt out ballast.

UPDATE:

The relays work like a charm, still make sure that you don't use the Auto mode. Instead use the manual mode because this will ensure that your HIDs will last for years instead of months like I have heard of happening.

The lights look great, soo much more light than stock.

If anyone has questions please send me a message and I will try to get back to you quickly.

I can't post pics yet because I haven't posted enough on this forum, but I will try to get some up.

Final thought, if you are going to do both the Highs and Lows (A total of 4 ballasts) you wont be able to quickly flash your brights anymore because it will greatly reduce the lifespan of your HID highs.

where can i buy a kit for my GC? something that would be Do it yourself thing

You can buy a HID Conversoin off ebay for your GC. To have an "Plug and Play" solution you will need to buy one that also has relay's for your wiring harness. You will still have to connect to ground (on the fender beside the battery) and to 12v (inside the fuse panel).

Should be doable for the average do it yourselfer. If you are want to go a cheaper route, order a standard HID system off ebay or the net w/o relays and follow my directions from above. All the wire and parts should be around $20 to $40.

A final option would be to get a completed relay harness such as

and that should simplify things greatly...also save you some $$$

See above about not running the lights in the "AUTO" mode after you install the HIDs.

Once again Mike thanks for all your great info. If I would of known this before I installed my kit then I wouldn't of had my battery die numerous times.

However I just wanted to let everyone know that last night I took my baby to my buddies shop, which I should of done in the first place. Well after a hour of rewiring everything and hiding all the wires and making it look custom, my HID's are now better then ever. He put the Wiring Harness in with the Relay, the harness has it's own fuse also. Pretty Cool. So now all I need is my damn Supercharger...!!!... Common GSM!!! :D

Ok so in reading this thread, what do us poor canadians do? I cant go to the dealership and turn off my Daytime Running Lights... cause thats illegal lol.
