: Best Drag Launch
SRT Great 07-17-2006, 08:13 PM First post here, so take it easy on me. Picked up my GC SRT-8 a week and a half ago and almost have 500 miles on it. Probably going to the track here in the near future and would like to know which launch method netted you the best 60ft time and hopefully best 1/4 mile run. ESP on/off, green light (yea, I know it's the last yellow light for those of us with slow brains) then mash the gas, powerbrake to ?????RPM, or pull ABS Fuse and/or combo of the above. Thanks.
2MCHPSI 07-18-2006, 08:03 PM I've taken the truck to the track a couple times, and still don't know the answer to this one. I usually pull the ABS fuse and tap the throttle to flash the converter, then I just patiently wait with both feet gently on each pedal, and lift off the brake pedal on the thrid yellow while giving the same amount of force on the gas pedal.
Hope that helps.
larryc7777 07-18-2006, 09:11 PM I haven't gone yet(waiting on my Magnaflow cat-back to arrive) but here's what I have "felt" from doing launches on the street.
Traction control switched off
Leave shifter in drive
Don't powerbrake against the convertor
Mash the throttle on the third yellow
I'm not going to powerbrake because I want the convertor to "freewheel" as much as possible so that it will shock the tires hard. A little wheelspin is a good thing when launching.

(who ever came up with the 15 post idea?)
waydennis 07-19-2006, 05:54 AM Mine launches best with no preload. Just brake and then go WOT.
Videos here with runs 2 and 4 having preloads. http://www.waynedennis.net
I will try to upload the spreadsheet with time analysis for 60 ft times which showed negative effect of preloading when I go to work.
barho 07-19-2006, 07:12 AM waydennis - nice videos! Any mods yet, or were they videotaped stock?
EDIT - looks like stock to me
Goldengreek5 07-19-2006, 08:24 AM My slowest time was when I just mashed the throttle without preloading. My best time was when I had one foot on the brake and one on the gas, brought the rpms up to about 2200, right before I got some tire spin, and on the third yellow let it fly. Traction control was off. I'd say try many different ways to see which gets you the best times.
Jerod 07-19-2006, 10:07 AM This will be interesting to see... My old 5.9 had a sweet spot of 1800 RPM's. You wanted to have just enough stall to get a good launch but not too much or the weight transfer would actually slow you down. When you powerbraked too high the back end would raise up.
Goldengreek5 07-19-2006, 11:34 AM Jerod, thats exactly what happend to me. Powerbraking to hard once I hit the staging light. Let off the gas a little and the ass end dropped, then I hit the third yellow and took off. That was the run I got the 13.56!!
Jerod 07-20-2006, 02:00 AM Sounds like it is setup with a similar stall... The best thing to do is powerbrake it just to the point where it wants to lift the back up but doesn't actually do it. That will be your sweet spot. Many people mess that one up.
scottiekay 07-20-2006, 05:32 AM It appeared to me that a couple of the cars that you dragged with for example the neon has nitros? is that safe to say? I think you represented us well! Nice work and great video.
CGR LVR 07-20-2006, 10:13 AM I just stand on both pedals to about 1800-1900 rpms and then let go the brake and hold on
SRT Great 07-20-2006, 03:49 PM Thanks for the replies. I'll likely have my Mopar Cold Air installed and hopefully my B&B catback before I get to the track the first time. Anybody done the stock runs and then back to the track with these mods? What kind of improvement.
Also, I figure with AWD, that lowering air pressure will have little effect on traction, so I wasn't intending on messing with it. Has anyone found differently?
Jerod 07-20-2006, 07:46 PM I wouldn't touch it and I was running similar times in my old Jeep as you guys are now... I tried lowering the pressure and trapped just a bit lower. You shouldn't have any problems leaving the pressure where it is.
waydennis 07-20-2006, 08:01 PM I think that lowering air pressure with the Eagle RSA EMT's would mean very little.
Stiff sidewalls are made to make 50 miles at 0 pressure and 55 mph.

Was at the track Friday for my baseline runs (13.8 was my best). As soon as I get my B&B and CAI I will be going back. Will post my experience with the mods.
zen garage 07-22-2006, 07:33 AM I had about 12 runs yesterday in the jeep. It ran a constant 13.55 with 1.8's. I even let two other guys run it to see their results...13.55. One run even had a passenger. I normally do pretty well in my viper on the track but there is always that pressure of shifting and the launch on street tires. the jeep is amazing, preload it a little bit, than launch, keep foot floored the entire way. done.
I was running zoomers, mopar cai, babyseat and a bike rack.
12SECUV 07-22-2006, 08:48 AM I love that post. "babyseat and bike rack"...that was one of my main appeals to this vehicle. A vehicle that you can really use everyday, is somewhat stealth in appearance and can make Mustangs, X5's, Cayennes and others really wonder what just out ran them at the stop light. I'm the new favorite amusement ride in the neighborhood. Good friend rented a Hertz Shelby GT last weekend and I won easily on takeoff but he started gaining before the safe pavement ran out. The Hertz Stang was strong, but ugly.
