: miles to empty too conservative?
HTRon 08-10-2007, 06:59 AM Has anyone else noticed the miles to empty (and the gas gauge) being way too conservative? I've run it down to 0 miles to empty a couple of times, and when I filled it up, I was only able to put in 17 or so gallons, making about a 4 gallon cushion! My past experience in other cars only had a 1-2 gallon cushion.
Is it supposed to be this conservative, or is my float (or however they measure it) too high in the tank?

Mine is like that too. Others have reported the same.

Ink Pump 08-10-2007, 08:10 AM Yes I remember this discussion well!
I can tell you I have run 20 miles after the computer says empty and still only used 19.4 gallons to fill up
You need a steady nerve to try this!
promo718 08-10-2007, 08:17 AM or a milk jug filled w/ 93 :>
kramsay1234 08-10-2007, 08:55 AM Actually - sorry for the story, but its relevant....
I was driving from the other side of town on the toll highway where there is no where to fuel up and ran it down to zero. Still had about 20 km to go. After reading the old post, figured I would be fine, so pressed on. Made it off the highway and my phone rang. Got talking and pulled into the restaurant I was going to which is only a half block from the gas station. Left the truck running and was on bluetooth. About 5 mins later the trucks sputters....hmmm....out of gas. I turned the truck off, and had to walk to the gas station, buy a gerry can to get her going...
Now I am not so c0cky about how far it goes when says zero to empty....
Ink Pump 08-10-2007, 08:58 AM Yikes - expensive and time consuming phone call
Did you have any problems getting started or running after that?
BuilderBill 08-10-2007, 09:22 AM I normally hit the trip reset when it reads "0" to empty.
I know I have ar least 20 miles further to go.
The day at Rockingham when Blackstallion and I had the track for the day, I have never seen our gauges rear so low. The needle was so far below empty it was scary. Neither Black or I ran out before a re-fill though.
I think I will stay with my fill up in 20 miles theory.
After all i am a pretty conservative guy!:D

ulikeit 08-10-2007, 09:59 AM My Altima has a 20 gallon tank and it blinks 0 with 3.5 gallons left. Most are conservative. Not like the VW Bugs that the gas light would come on and 2 miles later it would run out.

K, so are you saying you put about 20 km on it after the tank read zero before it ran out?
I've regularly gone 20 miles after it read zero. Actually, when its read zero, I've shut it off gotten out and returned; it usually jumps up to around 17 miles remaining. Too bad this doesn't work more than once, or I'd have amazing fuel economy to report.

Nope, started right up. When it started to sputter I knew right away I was out of gas so I shut her down. After adding my whopping 1 gallon of gas she came back to life.
kramsay1234 08-10-2007, 12:04 PM I just clocked the approximate distance on MapPoint and it was 29 km which is about 18 miles. So that supports the 20 miles that everyone is getting, but after that, you are taking a chance because I ran out. I could be off a mile or so because I am recalling roughly where I was on the highway when it got down to zero to empty.

I think the problem is your engine is confused by those kilometer thingies. Switch over to MPG and you'll be fine.
:D

kramsay1234 08-10-2007, 12:42 PM maybe since i fill up in liters i have a smaller tank. it sure feels that way on long trips anyway...

Had your readout been in gallons my bet is you would still have had fuel left.

We spend way too much time on this site. I was thinking about the last time this came up and waiting to see the post from Candy below. :)

Oh, man, I apologize...I had looked around a bit for something like this, but obviously I didn't look hard enough. There's so much great discussion here that I keep getting sidetracked!
I would love to be around for the next chat with the engineers, I'd like to see if there's any way to get this adjusted, but it seems I'm always checking in a month after they have one.
But I just love my SRT8...and yes, unfortunately, I call it that even though there are other srt8's besides the jeep...
ROCKST8R 08-10-2007, 08:46 PM I did the same thing yesterday...computer said 0 and I got 22 miles on it after that before I fueled up. I still only put 19.2 gallons into her.
