: I'm kind of worried about my engine...
split2112 07-12-2006, 11:42 AM Ok, so at around 2000 miles, my navigation told me that i needed an oil change. I didnt really think anything of it as everyone else was recommending to get the first one at 1500 miles, then every 3000 after that.
Today, right before i hit 4000 miles, my Nav told me that i needed another oil change. This got me kind of worried.
Here are a few backgroud facts:
1. I drive very mildly, no redlining and I only occasionally push it hard off the line.
2. I just put a CAI in about 2 weeks ago.
3. My gas milage has gone down about 1.5 mpg in the last 2 tanks of gas. (which is why i dont think my Nav is lying to me)
Is there something wrong with my jeep? What should I do? Help please!
garyb 07-12-2006, 11:49 AM You can set the maintenance interval to whatever mileage you want on the system monitor so check your manual but if you go the step button on the dash near the C/T button (compass/temperature) and scroll through the options you'll see that maintenance interval screen and again, you can set it to whatever mileage you want to change your oil.
Untouchable 07-12-2006, 11:52 AM check your oil level. These motors do burn a little oil so your level might be low. Also, the CAI might have affected the mpg though it usually raises the mpg. Does the check engine light come on?
Might want to take it to the dealer and have them run the comp for any codes. hope this helps

split2112 07-12-2006, 11:59 AM my EVIC is set to 3000 mile intervals....its the Navigation thats telling me I need an oil change.
radduc 07-12-2006, 12:27 PM Navigation???The chicks voice comes on and says change your oil???Dude your car is possessed!!!!
garyb 07-12-2006, 12:33 PM if you check out page 56 in the Navigation manual you can also set that mileage for maintenance intervals on the navi system. Go to the maintenance menu on the navi screen from the main menu, hit enter then select the service you want then hit modify and put in the mileage you want. I wasn't even aware of that function, guess I'd better grab a couple cold ones and go over all the manuals one more time to see how much stuff I missed.
split2112 07-12-2006, 12:43 PM so the navi doesnt know whether or not i need one? its just set on an interval?
the worse gas milage is still worrying me.
garyb 07-13-2006, 10:12 AM yeah that's the way I read it and it works strictly on whatever mileage you set in the system versus actually checking the condition of the oil which is kind of lame considering Mercedes has a system that checks the oil and tells you when to change it based on the conditions and kind of driving you do.
You didn't say what your mileage is but I personally am getting about 12.8 - 13.0 miles/gallon and that figure is all over the board from what I've seen on this forum and others. If it's much lower than 12 you really should have the dealership plug in their diagnostic tool to check for anything way out of whack. Is there a lot of black soot on the tailpipes as that may be an indications yours is running rich? A bit of soot is normal as it will run a little rich at start up,
split2112 07-13-2006, 10:32 AM i was getting about 13.5-14, now im down to barely 12.0.
i dont know how much consider a lot of black on the pipes, but it gets dirty pretty quickly.
Im gonna take it to the dealership, but i dont want them to just pass it off as me needing another oil change. I want them to actually check things out. Any suggestions on how to get them to actually look into things?
does anyone else's Nav tell them about oil changes?
lincoln 07-13-2006, 02:23 PM I don't have an SRT8 yet but I noticed a decrease in gas mileage on both of my vehicles the past few tanks. I attribute my loss of mileage to the change from MTBE to Ethanol in the gas which has been occurring here over the past month or two. I don't know what the expected decrease in efficiency is with 10% E blend vs MTBE blend but I do know that E85 (85%) users can expect to see mileage hits of 25%+. My change has been similar to yours, 1-3 mpg lost on my 14mpg rig...haven't measured the loss on my 18mpg rig but did notice fewer miles on the trip ODO at the last fillup. Does anyone think it's funny that I call my 18mpg vehicle my economy car???
split2112 07-15-2006, 03:03 PM my freakin NAV was set to tell me about oil changes every 1864 miles
?!
Red SRT-8 07-16-2006, 11:33 AM These maintenance reminders are arbitrary. You set your own preferences. There are no sensors to tell when oil needs to be changed. You can also set reminders for things like tire rotation.
Mileage can have so many variables that you shouldn't sweat different results from tank to tank. Did you have a heavy foot, were you driving on inclines, how fast were you driving on the highway, what kind of fuel, were you the only driver, how humid, how hot, etc., etc.? These all will affect your mileage. It's more accurate to look at averages over several tanks of gas. BTW, I got up to 16.6 mpg on the way to California this trip. But, while it's interesting to note the mileage, I didn't buy this Jeep for fuel economy.
split2112 07-17-2006, 09:22 PM I have not been driving with heavy foot at all. today i was down to around 10.8...
I am in Southern California, where it has been in the 90s, but i drive at 8 in the morn and 7 at night.
This is not good. Could it have anything to do with the CAI that was installed???
it may just be in my head, but its feeling a little sluggish too
help
garyb 07-17-2006, 09:55 PM if there is no check engine light on chances are you're OK but wouldn't hurt to have the dealership throw it on their diagnostic plug in gizmo and see what's up. Even if they say they didn't find anything, take it from an-ex factory rep., it's always good to have any concerns documented on a dealership repair order just in case you run in to something down the road and you can use that to say, "I told you so" and it was reported well before the warranty ended.
split2112 07-17-2006, 10:03 PM yea, i think ill do that... i took it to the dealer this morn, but they said same as you... if no check engine light, then im ok, then they said if i wanted them to really look at it, theyd have to keep it for 2 days (no thanks)
ill go back to the dealer and tell them to do the diagnostic.
split2112 07-17-2006, 10:04 PM ps, thanks for all your help so far guys
tainui 07-18-2006, 05:01 AM Grease makes the wheels turn easier. Hit your service manager with a $20 when you walk in the door for "appreciation" and he'll take the time to look at it instead of passing you off.
Guess the techs from the dealership got you good setting the NAV up for that low milage service. I bet they got a good laugh tinkering on your truck before you got it.
split2112 07-18-2006, 10:25 AM Heres another thing i dont know if i should worry about or not:
When im driving in traffic on the freeway, and say i accelerate to about 10 mph then let off the gas, i almost immediately feel like the engine slows the car back down...instead of just letting the car slow down on its own. This is just something new to me and i never felt that in my old car.
sorry for the paranoia, just tryin to ensure that my car is in top shape.

That's from the higher compression in these engines. It's a good thing. It slows down faster because the higher the compression, the more energy it takes to compress the air/fuel mix. This means more resistance to the pistons' movement during the compression cycle. Therefore, when you let off the gas, the engine rotations slow much faster than you're used to. Start worrying when it doesn't slow down that fast.
Also, the mileage you're getting is pretty normal. Are you resetting the mileage computer with each tank of fuel? If not it is an average since it was last reset. It tends to go lower and lower as it combines city and highway averages. If you do an inordinate amount of city or highway driving it will skew the average one way or the other.
split2112 07-18-2006, 12:01 PM phew, ok, good to know, thanks
yea, ive been resetting it after every tank.
