: How often do you wash/wax

So my wife got me this great gift after I got the jeep. Its 1 carwash per day for an entire year. Well, I guess i am working to get my money out of it becuase I cant seem to steer clear of the wash. I generally take it through the full service wash at least 3-4 times a week then end up putting a coat of wax on it each weekend. I guess my question is, can you wash or wax too much? I dont want to get a year down the road and have a faded truck.

I hand wash it usually 2 times a week and quick detail it every day before I put it back in the garage.

I have OCD. LOL

I'm sorry I just dont like a dirty vehicle.

For instance the thing that bugs me the most are the rims being dusty. I stick my hand in the wheel and clean the insides every day and of course I clean the face of the rims.

The dust really bothers me. LOL

And as far as waxing goes, I do it once a month.

And every 6 months I clay bar, polish and wax.

I wash mines at least once a week during the summer. I will give it a good claybar, polish, paint sealant and a few coats of wax before the summer ends to get it ready for the winter and do the same for the summer. I wash her once every two weeks during winter.
I have black so it is very hard to keep it clean.

waterless wash every day, maybe miss one day a week. full clay bar and wash every other week. new wax coat when I feel it is needed. paint correction/polish beginning and end of summer. black keeps you on your toes haha, but enjoy every second cleaning my car. remember every time you touch the paint with anything, (towel, clay bar, water, hand), it takes down the wax coat so if you touch your paint alot your gunna have to reapply as you will take it down faster. I detail many friends rides now after they see mine haha. If you can take it through the self wash do it, the automatic washes catch rocks in the pads and will scratch your paint, especially if thats every day :(. Dont use the brushes at the self wash too much, they have so many things that will scratch up your paint caught in them as well. Unless you wanna pay someone to do a paint correction or do it yourself ever few months I saw a nice hand wash is going to be your best bet. A automatic car wash every day is going to be like beating a dead horse. Your better off just spraying your truck down with water then going through one of those. sorry if that was longwinded, but detailing is a bit of a passion for me and wanted to give you as much to think about as possible ;) haha

I never drive thru car washes.

Wax twice a year, but its not a daily driver and lives in the garage.

To me, cleaning the back of the wheels is like shoveling shit with white pants on.........(doesn't make any sense)......lol

I hate a dirty vehicle also, but it takes me 3 hours to do a full wash/dry/interior.........so I just try to NOT get it dirty

It depends on the weather for me. I usually check the weather before i wash. if its gonna rain the next day or in a few hours, i will wash it the first day its clear.

My jeep does not stay in the garage unfortunately so I wash it at least once a week depending on the weather. I try to do a quick wax once a month to help protect. Every 2-3 months I clay bar and rewax the ole' girl. Waiting on some goodies in the mail so I can do a paint correction.

It takes me about 3 hrs to wash & detail it as well. Luckily I have a garage to keep it in so it stays pretty clean. I usually only have to dust it with my california duster. Thing works like a charm! Quick once over with it & I'm good to go. Just have to get the bugs off with a bug sponge & pressure wash the dust off the wheels around twice a week.

If you wash it every week, a spray wax is great. It keeps it protected for a few weeks then spray wax again when needed.
Paste wax is more of a 2-3 times a year thing for me.

It's a DD so wash once a week unless it rains then I wash it before it goes in the garage which has led to some late night washes and snide comments from the neighbors. Quick detail almost everyday...can't stand the way the back looks after 2 miles. Paint correction once so far, clay and wax every 2-3 months or so.

haha didnt mean full clay bar every other week, mostly jsut the front. yes Im insane haha. think this black car has knocked a few screws loose :silly:

Guys what's a "paint correction?"

A paint correction is a process that removes (some) scratches, bird poop markings, swirl marks and other contaminants of paint. You generally use a random orbital sander/polisher and polishes to bring the paint back from dull to life. The dullness comes from like refracting in the defects in the clearcoat, with a paint correction these defects are corrected and the paint will look "wet". Its a fun process and everyone should do it at least once in their life ;). haha. generally very time consuming if done correctly and very fine attention to detail. Im sure someone else will chime in too but thats the jist of it, and ive been up for like almost 2 days so im sure something will sound wrong haha.

Water is THE WORST substance you can put on a car. I use waterless wash as much as I can and am a FREAK with my car's appearance like some of you other OCD'ers. Always have been. At a minimum, it's dusted everyday. Those dusters are great. I wash with water about every two weeks...but I use softened water (had a bib put on my water softener) to lessen water spots. Clay once a month. I have tried everything and swear by Adams' products. I should have my wife read this thread so she thinks I'm a little less crazy.

Never, Never use a drive thru wash unless you don't care what it does to your paint. And many don't...that's why they're in business.

ChiefP

it's a product made to clean your car without water. Several companies make it. The caution here though is not to get it too dirty or you need to use water. These products do great (with a good micro fiber towel) with just light dirt.

Auto car washes use soap that's too strong and the brushes will marr the paint and potentially even scratch it if there's containiments from in it. If I HAD to use one, go brushless.

This is all great info! Making the decision to buy black I knew washing would quickly become my most time consuming "hobby". Is there a thread on the claybar process or the paint correction process. I have never done either of these in the past and would like to get a start on them.

I wash mine when ever it nees to be cleaned ... whether that's once a year or once a day. I would say on avergae about once a week during dry months and 1-2 during the fall.... winter time = hibernation for the jeep haha

usually just a hand wash at home followed by a shammy dry and micro fibre final touch up .. vacum interior and a quick dust removal on all trim and windows.

Then this may really make you crazy. My kids wash moms car 2 times a year. Once in the spring and once in the summer. The wheels in the pictures are stock. Not blacked-out aftermarket wheels. When I had to replace the front tires, the tire guy seemed very disappointed and told my wife that she should really take better care of the wheels. To which my wife replied, "I have less of a chance getting stopped with a dirty car rather than a glistening one"...

That dirt is ridiculous!

Really though, having dirt stay caked on the wheels like that will ruin the finish.

Indeed you would!! http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif .... It can easily be compared to a baseball dugout after the game! Lots of trash, spit, wrappers, crumbs, toys and perhaps some fresh (and aged) puke. Oh well.... It's all in a days work when mom chauffeurs around 3 kids. ;)

Boom. This is me to a "T." I, absolutely, hate bugs and brake dust. I have done this with all of my vehicles, so it's something i'm accustomed to doing. I paid way too much for this thing not to take care of it. It's refreshing for it to look brand new, almost, every time I look at it.

Too funny! However, my daily post on that thread would read something like... "yep, the bride still hasn't washed it'! Although, I'm afraid the redundancy could become polarizing and push to many to the edge! . :) Nonetheless, contributions via paypal are always welcomed. Albeit, I can't guarantee it will be spent on car washes.....:)

I have only washed my JEEP twice this year. Once when I pulled it out of Winter storage and just the other day, I got caught in rain and had to wash it. Otherwise, it is polished/waxed twice yearly. After EVERY use, I use a Calif. Car duster to get the dust off, then wipe it down with quick detailer and MF cloth before I park it in my enclosed garage. This has kept it looking brand new over the 3 years I have owned it.

not often enough. I did just get a nice detail, but they left some of the white residue in a few spots. I used the Turtle Wax Black box on the Jeep and was very pleased with the results. Really liked that it didn't leave a white residue on the trim, obviously. Pretty easy coming off. Enjoyed the product.

I did win Best SRT8 Powered vehicle at the Mopars at the Lake in our local Mopar club's annual meet. ;) Trophy and all so something worked.

I wash the 300 once / week and sometimes every other depending on how dirty it gets. It's silver, so a great color for DD. I typically spend my time with washing, spray detail, tires, interior...so it takes me forever. 4 vehichles and I'm the only one washing them is a constant chore. Seems like I'm always washing a car on the weekend...

The Jeep and Viper are parked in the garage and are always clean. They aren't daily driven, so I only wash them once or twice / month (if that).

The DD Acura 3.2 TL hasn't been washed all year and I don't think I've ever waxed it. It's a light blue / grey color and hides dirt well. It's supposed to rain today...so I'll count that as a wash...LOL! I can't stand a dirty vehicle either, but let it slide for the Ac.

Granted your wifes intention was in the right place but car washes will destroy your paint.

I ONR the Jeep about twice a week and apply sealant about once every 8-12 weeks.

I've never taken it though a car wash and beacuse of this my paint is still near perfect and i've never had to polish it.

If my jeep moves it gets washed. I walk to work but it's kept in an underground parking garage (lots of dust). Washed a bare minimum of twice a week. Never waxed it to be perfectly honest. That's not something I have ever done but maybe I should!.

I have a new srt8 in Grey it gets dirty fast. Maybe once a week I take it to the car wash and use colinite sealer wax twice a year on it. The brake dust on the front brakes builds up in one hour, nothing I can do.

i wash mine about once every 2 weeks. Twice a year i bust out the polisher for some paint correction. i spend about 10 hours doing this process. wash, claybar, 2x over with some compounds and polishes, wheels and tires, and finally 2 coats of sealant. When i am done the truck looks almost brand new and the rain beads for a good 6 months. Other than that, i usually use the ONR a couple times a month. Takes me about an hour. Black looks BAD when its clean !!!!!!!

Black DD is tough to keep clean. Wash once a week, spray detailer as needed, wax twice a year. I do run through a touchless wash, but if you get the minimum package thats usually enough to clean it without killing it with soap. I don't ever get the "full" package b/c it just sprays "wax" and crap everywhere.
