: Problem After Removing Rain Guards

Hey guys, I have a slight problem that I hope I can get some input on. When I picked up my car a couple weeks ago it had both pinstripes and rain guards (the plastic ones above the windows) on. With a few hours of work both the stripes and guards had come off. The issue is the residue left behind the rain guards. The 3M (at least I'm guessing it was 3M) tape has left a LOT of the foam/stickygoo behind them. It's not all that noticeable from far away, but for me getting in and out of the car all the time drives me insane.
We've now used goo gone and a tar remover to no avail. I know a professional detailer could pretty easily take this stuff away and then compound/polish the damage away after, but I was wondering if there are any last options I have in regards to dealing with it myself?
Thanks for any suggestions!

is the goo on the plastic or the paint?, if its on the plastic no compounds should be used on that. If its on the paint a simple compound polish process will take it away I am almost certain like you said. If you want him to just take it off the paint it should not cost almost anything, on the rubber is a different story. If you were close to me and it was on the paint I would come and compound it off for you but Michigan is a bit away haha, maybe someone in PA close to you with a DA would be willing to help you out?

you may want to get a good wax as well and try it if the paint looks like its stained.

The foam/goo (its actually quite a bit of foam still, not just the sticky residue) is on the paint itself above the windows. If I had to guess I would say its maybe a 1/4" thick at most, down to a thin layer of residue in other parts. I'm trying to get it off myself this weekend but I wouldn't be averse to someone in the area dropping by with some real knowledge (I'd be more than willing to pay for services as well). Thanks man!

Thank you! I'll pick some up and try it out on Saturday hopefully :)

Get some 3M Purpose Adhesive Cleaner #08984 in the red can from your local auto paint supply or auto supply store. Don't mess with consumer grade products. Great for any kind of adhesive/goo/tar, etc removal. I always have a can handy.

Any foreseeable problems dulling the paint or anything along those lines? I think that'll be my route this weekend if I can find some :)

Assuming you working with factory paint or proper repaint, no. The 3M product is specifically made to use on automotive paint. Just keep the rag surface wet and turn to a new rag surface as the adhesive comes off. If you have a lot of the foam part of the tape still there, you may be able to roll it off with your thumb.

The cleaner works slower than some hotter solvents like lacquer thinner. 3M has more aggressive products but I have not used them.

I would tape off the rubber window gasket if needed to keep the cleaner off it.

You will need to use some clearcoat polish then wax after using the 3M Cleaner. It removes all wax.

Good point. If the actual tape and some foam is on there, sometimes a little heat and you can roll it off with your thumb. Or soak with solvent and then roll it off.

Yeah I was using heat as I was taking them off, spent another hour or two on just the foam/scum rubbing my fingers raw on the stuff with no real results. I decided it was time to bring in some bigger guns lol
