If you have a 6.1 or 386 on order with us, the cranks are at nitriding and scheduled to be completed next week. Everything is here and ready to go.

Sooo.....what's all involved in the nitriding process.......??

It's a heat treating process that hardens the metal and makes it more durable. Very popular with valve springs in high performance applications.

Most gas nitride springs, but we ion nitride our crankshafts.

How do the cranks look? Or didn't they make it in?

None of the cranks have arrived so i sent out 3 cranks yesterday to callies and they are going to do all the work on the cranks for me. In the mean time, whichever ones show up first are the ones I will use.

Any word? Callies told me they dont do the nitriding, they send it to one of the 3 places in Michigan that they use. And its usually a week turn around on 25 to 50 pieces.......

Callies does all my grinding/Nitriding. Since you want to check up on me, call Brook Piper at Callies and ask him about the 13 cranks they have worked for me. They have a local shop called ShaftTech that does it for them and they were finished on Friday.


Here is the process.

Pre-nitride TIR and polish, nitride hardening, Grinding, post nitride TIR/Magnaflux/Polish. Thats nitriding twice, both before and after. I am also not nitriding 25-50 pieces at a time which means I have to wait for more pieces to arrive before they can nitride my pieces on both occassions. I guess I could do like others and not nitride the cranks at all and let them fail. Oh well, there is always next time.
