: paint chip repair

My beast has seen 5 winter seasons driving in the harsh road salt, gravel, anti-skid solution, and whatever else my city feels like throwing on the roads.

The lower half of my doors and side skirts are taking a beating. Paint correction has fixed a good percentage of it but a lot of the chips are thru the paint, especially behind the rear doors.

I want to either get the lower sides repainted or sometype of paint repair done.

Anyone have paint repair done on their jeeps?

Is it best to have a paint shop repaint it, or are those paint repair kits where you smear the paint color into the chips worth looking into?

wondering about this too, my paint correction took care of everything but that, but wasnt expecting it too. wonder what people have done to fix it up, michigan winters have killed my paint. Thought about Dr. color chip but I have a feeling it would look sketchy an not blend perfect like i want. subscribed

I don't know what level of damage you are talking about but I tried the Dr Color Chip system on a few chips on the front of our 2010 and one on the lower front door. It did a very nice job and it was easy.

It might be worth a try before you go for a repaint. Worst that can happen is you have the touch up kit for other chips and still have to repaint the bad areas.

It did not work on a scratch and the company states it is not recommended for scratches. Our Jeep is black and the truck I used it on also is red. The company states it works better on darker colors.

The sides of my jeep look pretty much like the road rash pics on the Dr Color Chip website.

I think I'm going to order a kit and see how it comes out. Can't be any worse than it already is.

I'll take before and after pics of the results.

I recommend wearing a magnifier headset and using a very strong work light shining across the surface when doing the "smoothing" step. Makes it much easier to see when just the paint smear has melted off and the chip repair is as level as possible.

Also if you get the repair to look "good" through the magnifier with a strong light, you know it will be hard to see under normal conditions.

I say repaint and do the clear tint bra on the bottom of the vehicle.
