What do you use to polish out the fine scratched (swirl marks) on the stainless steel (chrome) pieces at the window sills?

I got my truck delivered with fine scratches and have not figured out how to polishes them. I think they are stainless steel no?

Don't think there's much to do man. I believe they're plastic. Any kinda of cutting anything I would imagine it would make it worse. I think ur kinda SOL. Sorry man. Maybe someone else has an answer differently.

Thanks Keoni for the text link to this thread!!

I got mine back from the body shop with marks on the same piece. I took it back to them to complain & they managed to get them out. Don't know how they did it though.

The pieces directly under the windows? I think they are polished aluminum? The lower side moldings are definitely plastic.

theyre 100% metal. bent mine to hell when switching to the laredo moldings. chrome/mag polish on a tiny power ball should do the trick.

Great thanks guys! I kind of figured it's metal but have had no luck trying to polish them up. I tried 'never-dull' but it didn't really do anything. I'll try the chrome and mag polish next. I'm kind of nervous using the powerball as I may mess up the paint that butts right up against this metal piece.

I plan to use a die grinder with a cotton wheel and red jewelers polish compound. Tape a small area and then give it a try.

does anyone think its ok to remove the 2 half covers and spray and hose down the coildpacks and the whole area under the covers? or is this not a good idea? its pretty dusty under there

never a good idea to get any electrical part wet when under the hood. it should all be wrapped/tapped up first. use a spray bottle to mist the area and wipe away. a hose shouldnt ever be under the hood man! even do a 2 parts water 1 part alcohol to get it done more thoroughly.

i was wondering. i read somewhere that someone sprayed the enginebay down with an engine cleaner then lightly hosed it down but what u said makes sense. thanks man!

yup. that or get a nozzle with a mist setting. i use an engine cleaning foam very often if i neglect it for a while. foams up like crazy, let it sit for like 15 20 minutes til it turns dirty and mist it off. while some electrical stuff does get "wet" i avoid it as much as i can so its just a few drops here n there.

I power wash my engine a few times a year with no problems. My gto doesnt have any coil covers anymore and I hose it down too.

Need some cleaning supplies see autogeek, I use the wolfgang products line.

Well i WAS gonna enter her in a car show tonight but it started pouring. I was able to get her in the garage just in time. The can on the fan shroud is what i used. It was by gunk and it was a 2 in 1 cleaner/detailer then i hit with some armorall. i sprayed the WHOLE engine bay with this nstuff. i took a chancew by spraying all the powered work but i lucked out as it did wonders on the powered stuff and everything else. let sit for 15 minutes then used a light mist spray and rinsed very very well. prior to this i covered MOST OF THE ELCTRICAL CONECTIONS WITH BLUE TAPE. ALL WENT WELL. THESE ARE THE RESULTS. I

Dont ever use that on your engine again Joe!

That WILL fade the plastic and discolor the painted items.

Please use car wash soap sprayed via a foam gun, scrub with a mitt, rinse, then if you want shine, spray Bare Bones by Chemical Guys.

^^^^^ Great advice^^^^^

Start with warm and dry motor:

1-Dawn dish soap mixed with water in spray bottle ("Dawn cuts grease.....out of the way!")

2- Sit for 20 minutes.

3- Wipe down main parts with a single use cheap sponge.

4- Use soft brush around grooves/crevices

5- hose lightly

6- W-d 40 in hard to reach areas ( will run off dirt and water....non-conductor)

7- Use bare bones (chemical guys- google it)

Just try to keep wd and b.bones off of belts......

Chemical Guys are truly some of the best products......they have an acid-free wheel cleaner also)

not sure what kind of can you got there but whati use says something about environmentally safe, no harsh chemicals blah blah blah so i use it under the hood. does nothing but make the engine look better. no fadding etc for me.

and go to town with a leaf blower if you got one.:D

Dump in your favorite car soap, attach the gun to your hose, and viola you have a foam gun!

Soap up the engine bay, scrub with your favorite mitt, use soft brushes for those hard to get into areas, rinse, dry with a leaf blower, and finally spray on Chemical Guys Bare Bones. And make sure you wipe off the residue.
