: Bought a GC srt8 yesterday, already a check engine light!
dmaownsyou 07-10-2007, 10:05 PM First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Kory, I'm in SoCal, and this is my first ever american made car (well non jap car anyway). Before this I had an 03 evo8, and a mazdaspeed protege. I picked the jeep because I needed more room, and i wanted to try something other than a 4banger.
I bought the GCsrt8 yesterday, its an 06 with 11k miles (I hate buying used cars, but my local dealership was selling new for 45k, and I got it used for 34, which I thought with the 8yr/80k warranty I should be fine, even if the prev owner beat it up).
I love the truck, absolutely no complaints at all, performance is great, it's comfortable, luxorius (compared to my last cars) and looks amazing. BUT WHY IS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON ALREADY =(. It was suppose to go through this 1000 pt inspection prior to me picking it up. I am going to bring it in tommorow, hopefully it is something stupid. I know its a first gen car, but my evo was aswell, and I surprisingly had 0 problems.
Anyone have any common problems this could be? Car seems to run fine (if not hot, but oil temp is fine). It did kind of stall around a turn, but I figured it was tcs.
Anyway sorry for the long initial post, and hope this is a simple problem, so the modding can begin! =)

AggieSRT8 07-10-2007, 10:26 PM New to GCSRT8's as well but my guess is they gave you a tank full of regular fuel and its not liking it...
My GCSRT8 has 62 miles and the Engine light just came on....im hoping the idiots did this to mine too or tomorrow the dealer is gonna hear some serious @#$@ about it!
gpfarrell 07-10-2007, 10:40 PM "Kinda stalled it around a corner"... what's that mean? As you likely know, CELs are absurdly sensitive now... could be a loose gas cap. Get it scanned & go from there. But it's a heck of way to spend your first day!
OurZoo 07-10-2007, 11:04 PM Get a Dashhawk in the future and you'll be able to diagnose your own CELs. Btw, where in Socal is ya?

I am in San Diego (Poway area).
And as far as the "stall" I was going around a corner and gave it throttle but no response. I eased off and stepped on it again and it started accelerating. It was pretty weird.
Anyway, I am going to guess it is gas, it sounds like something a dealership would do.

Kory Kory,
Welcome!
First it is next to impossible to diagnose without knowing what code it threw. An early mod (after the radiator cap) should be a dashhawk or a computer program for your laptop that will let you read the code.
Ok my GUESS, look at your temp gauge...does it read 200*-215* normal? if not, then the previous owner probably changed to a cooler thermostat (176*) and that will throw a code in some situations.
Next, "kind of stall around a turn", sounds like the previous owner may have put in a camshaft and that will sometimes (on a stock PCM) tend to stall under some circumstances.
Let us know about the codes they find.

jlandbl 07-11-2007, 07:37 AM I always start with the simple stuff. Is the gas cap tight? This can throw a CEL. I don't believe 87 octane will throw a CEL but can tell you that our rig does not run well on it. Spark will be reduced and there will be a noticable power decrease. Stay away from WOT until you figure out what it is.
echo412 07-11-2007, 07:49 AM I would say it probably didn't stall around the corner. You just gave it gas while turning and TC said "hell no you can't do that". so it would seem as if the truck is not responsive "stalling" ... try is again but this time turn off (well kind of) the TC and notice the deference.

Congratz on ur Beast hope everything is goign alright and that CEL is just false call . Update us on any info

Welcome to the world of Traction Control/Torque Mangement, Enjoy the Jeep!

HoustonSRT-8 07-11-2007, 08:46 AM Are we sure the "stall" isn't just lag from the electronic throttle?
dmaownsyou 07-11-2007, 02:09 PM Nah I don't think it is electronic throttle. It happened today accelerating from 45-55ish and after a gear shift stepping on the throttle gave no response. I completely let off the throttle after a couple seconds and then stepped on it again and it started accelerating as normal.
The engine light is off now at least. I am going to try to burn off the rest of this fuel and put some good stuff in it and see if that gets rid of the problem. I am not sure the dealership can do much now without a check engine light.
Anyway, thanks for the positive words. I love the truck. It is really my first experience with american muscle (last couple cars being turbo 4bangers) and I really like the power anytime it provides. Plus the ride quality, and interior noise is like 100 times better than my evo. I can actually hear the radio in the truck. In my evo I had to put a $2k system in to even be able to hear music =).
