My family and I were taking a slightly used (1300 MI) Black SRT8 for a test drive when we heard the strangest noise.

We have been wanting to get one on a test drive, but no one will let us. When I heard about the used one, it seemed to be a perfect situation to go on a ride.

At first I thought that it was a belt slipping, as we heard it when I jumped on it getting on the freeway. We were going about 80ish and it was warm outside. I have then heard that there are complaints of the windshield trim getting a bit loose when it's warm out and vibrating in the wind.

Has anyone else had this problem? Please advise.

BTW, we're gonna get one, but probably a 2007. If this one was silver, we would have done it. Black is a bit on the hot side here in So Cal.

It is the window seals. My SRT8 GC does it but not till over 100. Never happened until the temps got over 90. My wife calls it the built-in warning siren now. This has been confirmed by several on the forum.

BTW - Get one fast...they are a blast!

Yeah, I was experiencing that same squeal this weekend. I found an empty stretch of highway and was playing around with some high speed runs. In 26 degree celsius weather, the squeal would start at about 150 kph. Once I hit 200 though the squeal turned into a scream of high velocity air! It sounded like someone opened up a window! Once I hit 220 I was abit scared that my windshield was going to fly off from the noise it was generating.

As well, is anyone getting a whine at speeds of around 100 - 120 kph? It's not that low frequency resonance that you get when you crush the gas, but more of a high pitched gear whine that seems to be coming from the rear end. It's acceleration indepedent and always shows up once I hit a certain speed.

Is there no way to fix this? I spend most of my time around 85-90 and just bought my SRT today. It screams at 80 and it's killing me!!!
Has anyone found a solution?

I am going to stop by my dealer this weekend a tell him about the noise for the 3rd time. Now that i know it's comming from the windshield I will be able to show him exactly where it is.The best part is going to be when he tells me they can't find the problem and I am going to have to duplicate it @ 140:D

Please tell me that this problem has been fixed for the 2007 SRT8

My dealer had me take mine to a body shop where they resealed the windshield accross the top. This has corrected the problem. In order to trouble shoot to make sure this is the problem, take some masking tape and run along the top of the windshield, this will eliminate the squeel, if this is the problem. Raven

I just got through the engine break-end period this weekend and opened it up in the 100 degree temperature when I thought there was a built in high speed sound warning. I will talk to the dealer about it but maybe I should just try a fine bead of window sealant under the upper gasket to fix the problem. Anybody see a problem with that?

I was in the interstate yesterday and at about 80 it started making a noise like that. Mine only has 400 miles on it so it kinda shocked me. I didnt want my new car to have some problem. Glad that I know what is causing it. Also, it was about 100 degrees here in CO.

It's good to know that the problem appears to be easily resolved. If the dealers are smart, they will reseal the upper windshield on all cars they receive prior to delivery.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. Using a forum for research is a great benefit. Thanks to all.

I stopped by the dealer today. They didn't deny the fact that I had the problem or heard the noise, but they won't replace the windshield. I am taking it back on tuesday to have everything resealed on it. So they were helpful in that way. they also told me not to listen to what people say on forums, as if you guys were liars or something...

I'd trust people on this form before some of these a**hole car dealers.

Like I said in the first post of this thread, it happened during a test drive with a salesman in the car. When the noise started, he stated that "it must be some other car". I said that I'll make it do it again, and I punched it up to 85 again. Of course, the noise started again. He got very quiet.

I'm betting that they hate forums like this where a large number of owners can compare troubles!

I had the same problem, it was coming from the driver side view mirror. There is a seam were the plastic snaps together that runs right along the center. I masked it, clear caulked the seam and problem solved. If not the windshield check side mirror.

I think we all have the mirror sound, which isn't to bad, but I haven't had the windshield howl yet. I broke 100mph yesterday headed up the Edens, and no noise. Maybe it comes with time, and lots of high speed driving?

130 MPH and no funny noises.

btw, what would be gained by members of this forum lying about windshield howl? The dealership is obviously believing that you have a problem or they wouldn't be resealing your windshield. I have some advice, don't listen to what dealerships say.

You guys both are in normal temperatures!! :)
You've got to wait until it's over 90 or 95. Mine doesn't do anything when it's in the 80's temp-wise.

Yeah it is 90-100 here... Anyways, took it to the dealer and they said the seal was loose on the top of the windshield. So they fixed that, threw a fit about doing my reverse tilt mirrors (but got it for free), and ordered me a new bumper, rather than painting my existing one. They did all that for me, but it seems like all the jeep dealers I have ran into are ass holes. Haven't had the chance to go fast when its hot, so not sure if everything is fine yet.

I believe it has more to do with the ambient temperature, than the speed. When the noise became apparent during my test drive, we were not going that fast, say 85. But it was warm out, perhaps 85-90F.

I've had this problem on other cars. Only makes noise when it's warm. Usually, a bead of sealant "under the flap" of the windshield seal will do the trick.

The dealers should really get past the anti-forum issue. They're here to stay.

Splain please. My mirrors don't auto tilt when in reverse, are they suppose too? Or am I reading that wrong?

I've found out that the windshield seal leak is not just a GC issue. Here is a thread from the Charger forums:

TSB 23-031-06 Windshield Header Buzz Or Humming Sound. Might work for the squeal.

Mine did this for the first time enroute to the SRT Nats in Topeka, KS. If I lowered the DS window about 1/2" it quit. It only did this with a right cross wind. I spoke with Mike, a SRT Eng. about it, he applied some 200 mph tape along the top of the 07 GC's windshield he brought there, same result-howling. My opinion it's the driver door weatherstripping seal plus a crosswind that makes it happen. The Eng. knows this and will present the problem to the factory to design a fix? Hopefully? I wouldn't let any experimenting fixes done at any dealers. Let them issue a recall to fix. MO Gene

Sure enough, I pulled her off the dealer's lot today and headed for the highway, soon as I hit 80mph it sounded like one of those emergency tones that interrupts a TV broadcast, it stuck around but started later at a higher speed.
Minor yes, but enough to seriously disturb the flow of my zenlike happiness from my first drive in my SRT.
