: FYI and a question

I had the misfortune of having a break in and theft of my Nav/Sat/CD/Radio head unit this week.

Apparently, this is extremely easy to do as follows; Break the driver rear window, reach in to unlock the door, get in, pull the radio bezel forward (no damage done, remove 4 screws, pull the unit forward, pull the 4 connecting wires (no need to cut), and leave. This is insanely easy, and per the police to whom I reported it, thieves know this and target the vehicles for an easy mark.

The unit's replacement cost is about $2400!!!

Here is my question, is there any simple, inexpensive fix?

$2400?! From who?!

You could try ebay or salvage yards. There is no simple fix, IMO. Thieves are lower than pond scum.

$2400 for a factory head unit? Damn.... I would consider getting a Pioneer AVIC Z1 (or 2) for that kind of cash.

And easy fix? Catch them in the act and inflict a dose of high-velocity lead poisoning.

The part itself is 2275 from the dealer. Surprisingly discounts via wholesalers are at most modest (300 dollars, or so).

Ebay has some older models that would work, but not cheap either, and who knows that they work, aren't stolen, etc.

For a quick fix, it occurs to me that using some sort of bolt that is difficult to remove (even welded...or something like that) might prevent the thief from getting away with the deed in time and they will leave it alone/move on.

That could work, or it could just make the person angry and stab holes in your seats and the nav because they can't steal it so they will just destroy it. This hasn't happend to me but is food for thought. The only way to stop a thief is to catch them in the act and as DJ Red Barron said fill 'em with high velocity lead. Just my 2 cents.

Good thinking, I was going to say "shoot anyone you see running w/a NAV unit", but didn't want to offend. :D

I think you could try to fasten the unit with a strap/etc. fron the inside, but like AT'sGC said it may result in other damages.

If i were you I'd put the word out to some local thugs that I was in the market to buy some cheap Jeep Radios, pay cash.

When the merchandise came, Id get the serial numbers and try and match them back to my Jeep, call the cops, and have the thugz arrested, or I'd just kill all of them and dump their bodies about 12 miles off the coast, wrapped in construction fence and lead weights.

just my opion.

Is construction fence really the way to go these days?:D

Sorry to hear about this. Get the 2400 from insurance and buy it for 1399.

Cheapest I have seen is 1799 for an earlier generation/model. Others are used (maybe stolen, or whatever).
