I love this forum as well as the members that I've come to know via this site. For you newbies, there seems to be some cool guys as well. I mean let's face it, we all have SRT8s or at least some cool performance vehicle. Right???? I swear I'm getting to the point of this...There are tons of great threads on this board. With that said however, I'm becoming quite annoyed with all the newbies or simply the lazy folk that don't at least make an attempt to find the information they are looking for and use the SEARCH engine on this forum. I don't know everything or even half of everything. I've learned quite a bit from you peepz here and I don't mind sharing the wisdom too. My point is that it would be so much more useful if we didn't have to search through some of the pointless repetitive crap posts on a daily basis. How many times can someone ask the same effin question? End of rant. :D

I've been a member of too many forums to count over the last 10 years. A few of the first ones I really made my home for a while and became attached to a bit, especially since I took part in some critical infrastructure, efficiency and organization of it and made some very involved contributions.

The same things happened with that forum. The same thing happens with every forum. The same thing is starting to happen here. But, there are still less than 10000 members here. Imagine what it would be like if it were like the forum I experienced this with - 50-100k+ members over a relatively short period of time.

What can be most helpful: sticky thread or "anouncement" thread, which is posted to each subforum in sticky like nature, that encourages searching and gives a tutorial with screenshots can be VERY effective, as well as creating read and search only subforums for knowledgebases and deleting other repetitive and unnecessary stuff.

Ultimately, what is most helpful in many cases: get over it and or just ignore. It's just the way things go. Not everybody even knows how to search and sometimes even people who do know how to search don't have time or make human mistakes and overlook things. Even despite my vast experience I asked questions that had answers in the Engineer Chat archives and I even asked for a link to them, albeit I did this in a bumped thread that was already on the topic that I found from searching. Luckily, nobody did the whole "search newbie" stuff to me, especially since I have been around the block a few times. It can happen to anybody, though.

I get tired of the same questions as well. I think I've been guilty of asking a few of them myself.

I've tried the search engine multiple times, but rarely find what I'm looking for. Is it me, or am I searching improperly. I put in 1 or 2 key words.

I use the Advance Search when it seems beneficial, and try to only search subforums that seem relative to my interest. Then, I also search the individual threads to narrow results even more - so I'm glad to see that these features are working well on this forum. Also, using quotations around your words may help to find compound words or phrases.

Still, it isn't always easy to find what you are looking for when searching and forum errors and limitations on how many characters you can search for - like how sometimes a forum may say you can not search for any word less than 4 letters (which can limit the ability to search for a lot of acronyms) ... can be a PITA.

It's an experience to be a noob and post a Category 1 - 5 question. It could be a religious experience for some, depending upon the ancients that may post. :D

I'll take the noobs over the petty BS and bickering we've seen on the board lately.

I don't mind it. Sometimes they raise new ways of looking at old issues.

Also, some people are new to this whole board thing and not too computer literate. I just try to steer them to the search feature.

Amen.

I think the "stickies" could be tightened up a bit..."What's new for 2007" seems a bit dated. But until I'm doing the work or paying to be here, you won't hear me complain about people not searching. It's a great hang out and I'm respectful that I've gotten way more out of it than I've put into it.

I've seen the bickering on other sites, and its sad. I'd much rather read a "stupid" question with straightforward intentions than a planted post with a hidden agenda.
