while the car was running and I was bleeding the system, I pulled the low speed relay on the fuse and the fan kicked on high, the temp dropped down near 185.

soon after the check engine light came on.

is the "fan mod" not to be done while the motor is on?

Just disconnect the battery (one terminal) for 10 seconds. Hit the brake pedal to drain any reserve while disconnected, them simply reconnect. You'll have to change your bass/mid/treble settings, but your radio stations stay stored and your clock updates itself.

Yep, it's not the t-stat that tripped the code.

so does rigging the jump wire for the fan set a code as well

do you guys run the fans while only while the motor is off or anytime?

The LOW will cause a code, the Hi will not. Read my directions on my MOD page

....ditto, read his directions, great track mod.

I ran my actual switch and neatly put it under the hood. (high side)

So at the track, I throw a bag of ice on the intake, turn the fan on for
about 10 minutes......if I am going to sit there, for over 30-60 minutes, waiting
as so many of us have to do.
I then start the truck for about 30 seconds, rotate the water, and run
fan again......it gets the truck nice and cool for the next pass.

Reset battery as stated..................but burp system, and top off first.
