We have had a bad winter here and the roads are covered with salt/sand constantly. When driving we are either in a cloud of wet or dry salt spray.
I noticed under the hood of our 2010 there was more dirt covering everything than any other vehicle we have had. While cleaning, I then noticed around the air filter box there was large amounts of crud.
I traced the source of this to the bulb changing doors molded into the front top area of the inner fenders. At the sides of the doors, there is about a 1/8" gap letting the road spray into the engine compartment. I cleaned the inner fenders and covered the gaps with 3M electical tape.
Time will tell but I think this will greatly reduce the dusting in the engine compartment.
