: Antifreeze
bee3633 01-23-2011, 04:51 PM Just trying to get some opinions. I changed my 180tstat and leak about a gallon out and after driving a couple of days needed to refill. I don't have a dodge dealer around me so I bought some Preston 50/50 mix 5 year 100000 mile and added a gallon to my tank. Is this bad? The service manual says aslong as it's a 5 year 100000 mile it's ok and the Preston says works on any system of any make but my fluid isn't pink anymore since mixing. Please tell me I don't need to drain the whole system.
waumo 01-23-2011, 04:58 PM My 2009 and 2010 manuals say to use HOAT coolant only. I would not mix in any other kind.

Man I just figured one gallon and it said safe for any vehicle inwould be fine.

Yep that's correct, called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology.
The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene glycol base coolant with organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% Ethylene Glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F). If it loses color or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution.
Look on the label and check to see if the coolant meets MS-9769 specs.

bee3633 01-23-2011, 05:49 PM Dammit!!!!
Will it be ok for a day until I can flush it?
I was thinking of draining it then filling with distilled water daring that then refill g with correct stuff. This sound good
Rambit 01-23-2011, 05:56 PM I'm sure you'll be fine until you get around to changing it if it's not HOAT coolant. There are other brands besides Mopar that meet MS-9769 specs such as Valvoline Zerex G-05.

Thanks! B I'll swap tommorrow after work and be done with it. I just don't feel right about it not being pink.

Yea I need to see when I get Home if that stuff meets the requirements because it's definitly not pink fluid anymore. Prestone has some that's says it meets those requirements but has gm dexcool on top of the bottle.
Rambit 01-23-2011, 06:17 PM I guess I should add that the service manual does have this caution...
CAUTION: Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Mixing of coolants other than specified non-HOAT or other HOAT coolant, may result in engine damage that may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty, and decreased corrosion protection.
I suppose a short duration wouldn't cause any harm, but in the long run it's best to change it.

No i may go 20 miles before I change I doubt that could hurt anything.
nyjoed 01-23-2011, 06:44 PM I would flush and refill

Did your fluid turn from pink to orangish green cause the prestone I used was green but read that color isn't what matters that's just dye to distinguish the brands.

I would only use HOAT, the Prestone isn't HOAT. The only brand(I could find) that makes HOAT is Zerex. NAPA usually carries it, AutoZone & AdvancedAuto don't (in my area).

^ That stuff is not for use with HOAT antifreeze.

+1, NAPA seems to be the only place that has it.
bee3633 01-24-2011, 06:09 PM Ok so I Pulled the bottom rad hose and let fluid drain reattached and filled with water and let run to about 180 degrees and pulled hose again. I did this 4 times and finally reattached the bottom hose and refilled with 2 gallons of the mopar fluid. I didn't see a reason to pull drain plugs on engine and take the chance of them leaking. So hopefully all should be good now.
