: Really need oil change every 6mo???
WestPalmBeachSRT8 01-07-2011, 09:07 AM WK jeeps says oil change 6k miles or 6 months. I am running Mobil-1 and really think any less than 6k of average driving (Clean environment) you are wasting money changing a synthetic. Synthetic also doesn't break down... I only put 5-6K on the jeep a year. Warm climate, sits in a garage all week... [Lets not talk about the computer indicator.. which isn't actually doing any kind of oil analysis anyway... Likely just a stealership plot!]
Why change the oil every 6mo if there isn't the milage or usage to warrant it??
Couple threads I have seen seem to agree with me ... oil change 1yr or 5-6k of average driving is just fine.
Several other OEMs are on 1yr oil changes and even more than 6k milage on new cars.
kmitch80 01-07-2011, 09:11 AM If you only put 5-6k on it a year, than i say once a year! Dont spend the cash doing it every 6 months because its a waste. You're not driving it hard. Best way to tell if you need to change it, just check the color. If you cant see thru it, it's time for a change. I change mine based on how i run it between oil changes.
I'm old school, & still do 3k. I don't drive mine much, & don't like the idea of the oil setting in there to long.

I used to do 3k religiously prior to synthetics (and Mobil1 is one of the best)... Especially with turbo cars.. But I really think its a different product these days.. Synthetic doesn't break down. Sitting in my oil pan, or sitting in a bottle on the shelf is exactly the same for it.
Someone tell me otherwise. But with Mobil 1 pushing $7/qt... its a reasonable question if its not needed. Seems like a lot of us still have our old 'gut' feelings making us spend money... Present company included... just trying to recalibrate on this one topic.
I went 1yr on the last change and the oil seemed fine by visual inspection.. I just noticed the 6mo notation on WKJeeps and figured I'd ask if the Jeep had some 'special' need.
P.S. My S2k gets Mobil1 and is also on the 5k/yr 1yr schedule. Which also looks fine. And it sees 8000RPM daily!
waumo 01-07-2011, 12:55 PM Every 6 mo because that is what the owner's manual says will maintain the warranty. Otherwise I would go a year like with my 1998 Chevy truck.
higshemi 01-07-2011, 01:53 PM Must be nice, I'm in for an oil change every month. Sometimes twice a month if I'm hitting the track every weekend.
StangSlayerMA 01-07-2011, 02:06 PM I'm old school too, every 2500-3K it gets changed.

Glad I'm not you! lol.
I do mine every 3k no matter what. It gets driven hard from time to time, but not as much as one would think.

promo718 01-07-2011, 10:38 PM i disregard time and just do it by mileage, every 5-6k
nyjoed 01-08-2011, 05:09 AM every 3k miles or 3 months here. keep her purrrrrring
TampaSRT8 01-08-2011, 07:15 AM I ran Mobil 1 in my Vette and put about 4-5K per year on it. I changed the oil once per year. The dealer told me that was what they recommend to people that don't drive a lot and use a good synthetic oil. I plan to do that with the Jeep.
What you do depends a lot on how you use the vehicle. Driving hard, racing, dusty/dirty conditions and you may want to change it more often.
Just my 2 cents.
jim383 01-08-2011, 07:26 AM Oil and filter are a cheap ins.
Oil and filter are a cheap ins.
Cheap insurance is getting your oil analyzed, not guessing like most do.

I drive my Jeep hard and my analysis actually shows I can go longer between changes.

awdls2 01-08-2011, 10:53 AM I do mine about that often most of the time sooner, its cheap insurance what $70-90 depending if you have someone else do it
MNBob 01-08-2011, 07:42 PM After seeing post after post of the analyzed oil being good at 3K, I decided to shift to 4K oil changes. At my first 4K change, I observed the oil was much darker (dirty black) than when I change at 3K. This upset me so much I went back to 3K.
I realize the oil from the 4K change, if analyzed, would have tested OK. In fact, it is probably OK to run synthetic 5K-6K. I just can't bear to look at it drain out.
With synthetic oil, I don't think time is an issue at all. I stored my Trans Am for years (with few miles and no oil change) and it starts and runs like new.
