: Battery tender vs. disconnecting battery
PhillyJeep 12-17-2010, 02:30 PM Can you guys help me with a technical question? I rarely use my Jeep during the week. Based on this fact, I disconnect the battery terminal until I plan on using the car. Is this doing any damage to the computer system? Would I be better off with a battery tender?
I hear some people say that it is bad to leave the battery disconnected, but I have been doing it for two years without any problems.
Thanks in advance!
waumo 12-17-2010, 03:08 PM If you drive it at least once a week I don't think you would need to anything.
When leaving a vehicle sit more than a month, I use a Battery Tender.

i use a battery tender. like you, my jeep isnt used all the time, esp in the winter. I have been using the tender for almost 3 years now without an issue.
read all the battery threads here. lots dont mkae it 3 years with the OEM. the tender will prolong that battery life. and if you hard wire it to the battery and poke the connection thru the grill like I did it takes all of 30 seconds to connect and disconnect the tender.
I use one on my Cobra, my last battery lasted 7 years and was probably driven less than 1000 miles. My Jeep is still on the original battery and I have had it since Aug. 06 and have never had it on a charger and has gone weeks(2-3) without being on one and has never not started.
PhillyJeep 12-17-2010, 04:41 PM Thanks for the responses. Do you think I am hurting the battery or system by disconnnecting the terminal?

I highly doubt it.
Motorboy1 12-17-2010, 07:11 PM Spend the little money on a tender. you can't go wrong and you'll find yourself using it on everyhting else with a battery too.
Doesn't the radio lose its time setting when the battery is disconected for so long?
nyjoed 12-17-2010, 07:19 PM i love my battery tender. i dont drive my truck allot at all. it wont kill u to not use one if u take it out on the wekends. if ur gonna let it sit more then 2 weeks or more at a time i deff would say to get one. especiaslly if its and older jeep. not that an 06 07 08 or 09 is that old but u know what i mean.
nyjoed 12-17-2010, 07:21 PM fyi they have those little mem holders that u put a 9v battery in and plug into the cig lighter anytime u do work to the truck so when u disconnect the bat u dont loose all ur radio settings and time.
PhillyJeep 12-18-2010, 07:31 AM No, the radio settings stay the same. I dont think it does any damage, but some people scare me that the computer will act funky.
On a side note, what do you recommend as a battery tender?
Thanks

WestPalmBeachSRT8 12-18-2010, 09:37 AM +1 on using a battery tender for anything that sits more than 2 wks. The make is literally 'Battery Tender'... Just google search... they are running about $46. The best part is you can hook up a permanent connector to the battery and run the quick disconnect end to a spot in the grill or other out of the way area to make hooking up the tender a 2 second job... you don't even need to pop the hood. Its similar to a 2 connector trailer connector.
But having said that... if you are driving it at least every 10days or so... you probably don't need it. Certainly doesn't hurt though.
sstdusty 12-18-2010, 09:44 AM deltran battery tenders is the way to go. should be able to get them off ebay or batteries plus carries them. i have been living and working overseas for two and years and come home maybe twice a year. with a cummins and three srt's sitting in a garage, i've never had a issue with my batteries. my buddy is suppose to start them monthly but who really knows.
