Can a billionaire give an automaker an offer they can't refuse? Do automakers sell their concepts in some point in time? What about the older, dated ones?
Street WK 06-11-2007, 11:24 PM As little as it sounds, concepts don't go through emissions tests usually. So they wouldn't technically be street legal.

Are the tests a long proccess?? What do they do with the older(1995 for example) concept cars then? Destroy it?
scottina06 06-12-2007, 12:07 AM some are sold as collector cars....so they woldnt have to pass emissions etc. I remember someone on the cougar forum found the original 99-02 Cougar concept for sale. They usually sell at auction houses etc. They are usually pricey from the ones I've seen for sale.
Str8Srt8 06-12-2007, 12:18 AM This trend all started back in the early 80's with the Eagles. I almost picked up one these SX/4's, but the buyer changed his mind.

You can buy concept cars at the Barrett-Jackson auctions. You can also search the archives and find some that have been sold.
Mango 06-12-2007, 05:10 AM Jay Leno has purchased a few concept cars for his garage collection. So I'm sure it's a very specific basis on which they sell them.

well actually its more of the point that concept cars generally don't even have a vin. Yes some are sold others are kept in GM's/fords/etc warehouses and usually crushed...
westsidestrangla 06-12-2007, 06:15 AM that is sad^^
HoustonSRT-8 06-12-2007, 07:43 AM Sadly most concept cars and show cars are crushed. :(

wish i had a camera today.. i live in milford MI which are where the GM proving grounds are and 3 semi trailers full of brand new crushed vehicles... you could only tell what they were by the wheels... plenty new fullsize trucks and some GTO's and vettes.... sadly the show vehicles get the same fate...
blu04srt4 06-12-2007, 11:22 AM I would be willing to pay Dodge whatever they wanted for the challenger concept.
DJ Red Barron 06-12-2007, 12:16 PM With the gaining popularity of the BJ Auction, more of them will surface. Sometimes people are "supposed to" do away with these cars but don't. So who knows what may happen with some of this stuff.
I know the original concept TrailBlazer SS was on eBay a few weeks ago. And the price wasn't all that bad. BIN less than $30k.

As far as DCX goes, they don't send them to the crusher...
Concept vehicles are neither sold nor destroyed. They actually have a long life after their initial reveal. What's amazing is concepts—no matter their age—are still hot properties to various consumer shows. They create such a buzz when revealed and are so futuristic that they tend to have quite a long shelf life. As such, we send them to various auto shows, as well as consumer events sponsored by the company.
In addition, concept cars are regularly studied by design, as well as marketing—they give glimpses or ideas as to colors, materials and/or features that could work on production vehicles or refreshes of existing vehicles.
Concepts are never wasted exercises—they can provide insight into what consumers like or don't like, and help decide what next steps Chrysler may want (or not want) to take with future vehicles.
