First and foremost, let me say that this thread is not me bragging at all. I know how awful the job market is and I am extremely fortunate and thankful for the opportunities that I have been presented with. I was without a job for a brief amount of time and so I know how stressful it can be, but to all of you who are in a jobless spot right now, just stick in there, good things will happen to good people.

But, on to the matter. So I have been working for an medium size IT consulting firm since September. I graduated from college in May and desperately wanted to stay out on the east coast for work so that I could be nearby my friends and take a break from home (Saint Louis). Well after job searching since January, nothing came of the east coast and so I had no choice but to move back home and try to find family connections to help me out with a job (and I don't mean to make it sound like moving back home was awful, just not my preference). So I moved home after school, continued job searching until August when I got an offer here in STL and another in Dubuke Iowa. Well neither were my top choices but in a time like this, I wasn't going to complain. So I took the STL gig.

I continued to interview while working here in Saint Louis in hopes of other opportunities outside of STL. While I really do enjoy my job here, I am just not ready to be living in STL because I know I will live here one day for the rest of my life. Im sure most of you understand how I feel.

Well about a week ago I received an incredible offer by IBM in New York. After speaking to my family and my current employer about the opportunity, I have decided to take it. I made the decision last night, and I think it was one of the most exciting moments of my life. It is a 2 year training/working global business consulting program. I will be traveling 4 days every week to different client sites. I am aware I am going to get burnt out of traveling after these two years but travel while your young ya know?

So it is time to start my apartment searching! So all of you New Yorkers out there who have any good ideas for a young college grad and relatively cheap (even though nothing in NY is cheap) please let me know?! Also, a big concern of mine is what I am going to do with my car. I do not plan on leaving it in NY because I am too afraid to drive it there and parking is super expensive. I hope I can leave it at one of my friends houses in NJ for the year. And then on weekends I will go drive it around. I just cant go two years without my jeep, I love it too much! So if any of you have suggestions on storing it, please chime in.

So sorry for the long rant, just wanted to share my excitement with you all and let you east coasters know Im coming to join ya, and I'm ready for many M&G's and track days!

im from nyc and i park in a 24 hour garage for 200 a month. not bad considering 24 hours and midtown area. i would love to keep mine at a friends place as well but i dont have that option so i pay..haha

are you looking to rent or buy? im in the residential managing business. what looks too good to be true...is just that, too good to be true. Good luck and welcome to ny!

i suggest renting an apartment in brooklyn or queens. you can also rent a garage spot, which typically go for 150-200 a month. stay away from manhattan... living there will be more expensive, plus parking the jeep will cost more as well.

looking for an apt is tough not knowing the area, check out this map and stay out of neighborhoods with a high homicide rate:

good luck man, ny's a tough town, but when you make the transition you'll love your time living here. no other place is like it.

thats sick man congrats!!!!
I know you arnt going to want to do this, but I'd sell the jeep.
Take the money you get from it and invest it and buy a 2012 in 2 years.
you are not going to be able to drive it for 2 years, so it will just sit there depreciating, without you being able to enjoy it.

Yeah I really hope it works out, I don't need to incur any additional costs on top of the cost of living in NY. Thats for sure.

I'm looking to rent an apartment. I have two other guys I will be living with. So hopefully rent will be manageable split three ways. Haha and yes I won't be falling for anything thats too good to be true, thanks for the advice.

Yeah I have been looking at the upper east side, a relatively more affordable area. Hopefully I Will be able to keep my jeep at a friends house year round because Im not sure I feel comfortable even leaving it in a garage in NY. Thanks for the map man, definitely a huge help! And yes, I will be staying far away from those neighborhoods!

Thanks again promo I can't wait!

I definitely hear what your saying, and I recognize that it is probably the most educated choice for me to make, but I couldn't live without the jeep. I know I won't be driving it at all in NY or during the week because I will be gone all the time, but I plan on commuting to NJ on the weekends (assuming I get to leave it at a friends house there) to drive it around for a couple of hours. I know I can make it work. The jeep just means to much to me to let it go. So I am going to make the "less educated" choice haha and keep it, but I'm ok with that :D.

Queens would be perfect. I grew up in Woodside. 10 minutes into the city buy train. Woodside/Sunnyside area have some great apts to rent and there are a ton of people that have garage space to rent usually for around 100-150 a month. If you look in those areas 3 guys should have no trouble splitting the rent/utilities. good luck and congrats on the new job!

Yeah, thats why I won't drive it in the city haha. Yeah I am also going to look at places in Hoboken NJ, I hear it is relatively cheaper. Plus I will be close to my car then :D

Oh I didn't even consider those areas yet, thanks for the suggestion krabs!

OK here is the deal. Congrats an all that for sure. My wife just finished 5 years on the road with IBM GBS (that is equivalent to about 10 years in normal human work years).
#1 I assume you graduated with your MBA, so congrats on that also.
#2 I don't know what deal you got, but to my knowledge there is no such thing as a non-travel job in GBS. So after two years, you will simply travel more. If you indicate you may not want to travel, you will be sh!tcanned with extreme prejudice.
#3 My god DO NOT move to New York City. You can live anywhere that is an airline hub in that job. Why pick the place that has the highest cost of living in North America on top of stupidly high income taxes. Move to Altanta or some other place that will cost you 50-60% of what NYC costs. You will spend approximately 36 hours per week in the place where you "live", make it the cheapest place humanly possible.
#4 Good luck with the job. It can be a fairly cut-throat and stress filled environment but the pay is good and you will get tons of real-world experience.
#5 Do your best to not turn into an alcoholic. I'll say no more on that.
