Ok, I like animals as much as the next guy but when they start scuffing up the Jeep, I get pissed . Over the last month I've seen scratch marks on both fenders and the hood where the cat is jumping up there and starts sliding and then digs it's claws in. I was able (thankfully), to get them out after alot of time and effort, but I may not be as lucky in the future.

I'm at a loss at what to do. If it was a neighbor's cat or a feral farm cat, it'd be an easy fix but since he lives here, it's not. I considered buying a car cover since it sits in the garage 90% of the time but the cat's claws would most likely penetrate it. Also, I think a cover would be a PITA as I like tinkering all the time.

Has anyone else had this happen or know a solution? The simple fix would be to get rid of it but it would break my kid's hearts and so I gotta figure out something to keep him off. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What about declawing the cat?

SRT8LUVER
10-04-2010, 09:20 PM
Already thought of that but as he lives outside he wouldn't be able to protect himself with the way cats fight and carry on but..it may be an option. I would prefer maybe a smell they hate or something I could put in a box or spray around the jeep or something. Declawing would be a last resort.

take the cat for a ride in the beast. about 10 min into the drive slow down to around 5 mph and "accidentally" push the cat out the door.

Well, If I don't let him in the garage then the other cats/dogs in the neighborhood would keep his food eaten as well as the rain/snow/cold etc. would make life pretty miserable for him. Although if push comes to shove then it could be a possible option.

That has definately crossed my mind but I just don't think I could do it. My five year old daughter would be walking around with big 'ole tears in her eyes saying " Daddy, where's Fluffy at". Would you be able to do it, lol?

I just spent a whole Saturday waxing and detailing it and that's when I started noticing the scratches. I keep hoping I'll catch him on the hood so I can give him a good thrashing and maybe teach him that is a bad choice. Dunno if it would work though as I've heard you can't train a cat to do or not do anything.

Maybe I could set him up a kitty corner with a sweet scratching post, comfy little pillow top bed and some play toys and douse the area in catnip every couple of days and he'd be too preoccupied to even fool with the Jeep. May be worth a try lol.

first, stop feeding the cat in the garage. Make it come in for its food, feed it in the kitchen and put it on a schedule...

Make it an inside/outside pet, get a scratching post and place some nip around the base... put it in a place the cat goes inside the house. Only allow it outside during the day and keep the garage closed. The reason they jump on cars is due to the warm hood, antifreeze scent or to get a better vantage point for prey.

Not sure if its a male of female, get it fixed if you haven't already and it may change its behavior - they tend to slow down some.

I have a few huge Corona beach towels I keep just for this, when parked outside the neghbor's bastard cats love a warm hood, I drape one over top, no more scratches. I also picked up a damn good sling shot, and hammer the douchebag sob's whenever they're in the yard. My neghbor was not pleased, keep the varmints in doors then.

Same thing when I go to my in-laws, they have a cat there, the only one I respect, it was a stray, was in town at my place, hooked a ride on my under bed spare on the truck, massive rain storm, 80mph, and held on, impressive bugger!!!! A huge towel keeps the scratches off.

along with hoseclamp.. cats are warm weather animals. If it's cold outside they'll look for the warmest spot they can find. Hell, my GFs cat is a x-ferel cat and she's learned to live as an indoor/outdoor cat.. they can be trained to an extent.

The only time she jumps on a car is when the car windows are open (because she's curious) or she wants to get on the warm hood. On a cold morning, she'll sit in front of an electric wall heater in a bathroom... I'm surprised her fur hasn’t caught fire by now.

If its 105 outside, the cat won't stay in the house where its cool... go figure.

They emulate the larger cat species...

Get the towels (great idea BTW), once the cat slips off a few times it will learn to not jump on your hood.

Good luck... and never declaw a cat, it's similar to amputating your limbs.

They've got spray stuff at the pet store that cats aren't suppose to like. Don't know if it works or not. You could try gettin some double sided tape & covering a couple towels with it & then covering the hood with them. So when it jumps up there it gets kind of stuck to it, will get off. Saw something similar on Animal Planet to teach them to stay off counters. Cats hate sticky things.

Like others said it's probably enjoying the warmth from the motor, be careful because I have heard of cats crawling into the the engine bay like next to the cooling fan and falling asleep. Owner starts it up and you get the idea

One good way to train cats is with a squirt gun, we had our cat trained very well. It was not allowed in the kitchen or on upholstered furniture

Are the cats (http://www.ehow.com/how_4471883_keep-cats-off-car.html#) lying on your car (http://www.ehow.com/cars/) driving you crazy? Well you are not alone. Fact is that millions of people are furious. They swear that the cats are watching them. I know that sounds silly, but it could be true. Cats prefer a newly parked car, to a cold car. Their natural instinct tells them to go where it is warm! . Do not get mad, there are solution's to your cat (http://www.ehow.com/how_4471883_keep-cats-off-car.html#) crisis, which will not harm a hair on the furry cats head! Here are some tips on how to keep cats off your car.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Natural cat repellent
Ultra sonic monitor to drive cats away
Garage
Catnip & grass garden
Citrus scented car wax

1
Apply a citrus scented wax to your car (http://www.ehow.com/how_4471883_keep-cats-off-car.html#). Citrus repels cats therefore; one sniff and the cats will turn and go the opposite direction. If a brave cat decides to hop up onto your car then the wax will protect your car from paw prints. The citrus scent will prevent the cat from getting comfortable and chances are the cat will leave your car.
2
Deter cats by luring them to a catnip and grass garden. Once the cats discover the cat, sanctuary they will forget about your car. That is unless it is cold outside!
3
Remove cats from your car, by using a motion device. The device contains a motion sensor so when the cat walks in your yard, or approaches your car, an annoying high frequency alarm goes off. The sound is so annoying to cats that they will leave.
4
Repel cats with granules derived from coyote urine. This solution is effective in removing unwanted cats, skunks and raccoons. Shake the granules around your car. Reapply after rain.

Tips & Warnings

Prior to removing cat from yard, check to see if the cat belongs to a neighbor. If so, discuss alternatives for keeping the cat close to home and off your car. It would be to the cat's best interest to be kept inside.

Cats lie on the hood of your car for safety, and because cats are heat seekers. The metal retains the heat, thus the hood keeps them warm.

Park your car in the garage. Close the windows and the doors to keep the cats out of the garage.

If you remove the cats from your property, be prepared to have an increase in rodents. Cats are a natural method in keeping mice, rats, snakes and squirrels away.

Answers Expert: Glad you asked...

You can keep cats off you car by sprinkling the car with cayenne pepper. Just be sure to cover your mouth and eyes before sprinkling it. Or, you can try a product called Feliway, you can purchase it at most pet stores, it works pretty well too.

Pet Training Mat
Because Furniture Is For People

Habituated behavior patterns are often correctable through simple avoidance of problem spots.
When the Scat Mat is positioned where pet feet will be just before an unwanted behavior is exhibited (i.e.: scratching, soiling, etc.), the Scat Mat sends a strong message to the pet while it is 'thinking' about performing an undesirable act.

Buy Now (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=Ykc2o4IsC1w&offerid=83313.50642&type=2&subid=0)Overview

The Scat Mat is a touch sensitive training pad which says "No", when you can't.

It quickly conditions pets to avoid prohibited areas with harmless, low-power electronic pulses similar to static electricity. Place the flexible vinyl Scat Mat in a room entrance, on your sofa, counter top or the hood of your car. The touch sensitive pad will silently protect prohibited areas from trespassers.

When touched, the battery sends small pulses to the mat for 3 seconds. These surprising little 'zaps' quickly repel most animals who stay away after one or two exposures - even after the mat is removed.

The vet approved Scat Mat works when all else fails. Used in conjunction with your normal training techniques, and surface cleaning (as appropriate for elimination behavior changes) the Scat Mat will help you restore harmony to your household.

We've been delighting and amazing frustrated pet owners since 1988. We're confident we can help you too.

Habituated behavior patterns are often correctable through simple avoidance of problem spots.

When positioned where pet feet will be just before an unwanted behavior is exhibited (i.e.: scratching, soiling, etc.), the Scat Mat sends a strong message to the pet while it is 'thinking' about performing an undesirable act.

Most pets quickly associate this unpleasant experience with the location. To avoid similar static sensations they begin to avoid the area.

Other reasons why Scat Mat works:

*training is consistent at the location, 24 hours a day.
*it is the environment rather than an owner doing the conditioning'.
*the static sensations generated are sufficiently surprising and unpleasant. These sensations communicate an immediate 'Leave now' message.

http://www.bullwrinkle.com/scatmat/smproduct5tn.jpgComponents

The Scat Mat consists of a Power Pack and a vinyl Mat with embedded wires. The components "snap" together with ease, and arrive assembled, ready to use.

You only need to supply one 9 volt alkaline battery. (Optional SKM-PPA Wall plug adapter available for use in high traffic locations.)

http://www.bullwrinkle.com/scatmat/mat_s.jpghttp://www.bullwrinkle.com/scatmat/sm_assembled.gifWhy Choose the Scat Mat?

The Scat Mat is one of the most effective solutions available for location specific pet training. When all else fails, it works. Over 300,000 are in use and the average satisfaction rating exceeds 8 on the 10 point rating scale.

Choose a Scat Mat if you've tried sprays, sound devices or booby traps without success. It will help you correct unwanted behaviors by conditioning pets to avoid problem spots.

Scat Mats are recommended by veterinarians, behaviorists and trainers as a safe, effective way to break habitual problems.

Poor cat! Sell the Jeep and build a really big cat tower where the Jeep used to park for the cat to be comfortable. Don't forget to add a heated blanket area for the winter time, and keep its food and water nearby.

Here's what I would get:

When your pet walks across the Scat Mat, small pulses of electricity move through the wires embedded in the mat. These little zaps come as quite a surprise to your cat or dog, who will quickly learn to avoid the area, often even after the Scat Mats are removed. The zaps are not dangerous, however, and will not cause your pet any harm- you can try it yourself!

I'm wondering though, with him jumping on it from different sides if he would just learn to avoid the mat and jump on it from the other side. My guess would be after a couple of "zaps" he may just avoid the area all together. I'll be looking into one of these. Thanks again Anthony I'm gonna order one of these today and I'll let you know what happens.

UPDATE: Ordered Scat Mat and some other goodies so hopefully this will resolve my issue.
