: So I switched over to...............
GodfatherSRT8 05-29-2007, 08:57 PM A mac book today. Anyone have any cool software for the Apple that they can recommend or send me, it would be greatly appreciated. In return I have most of the Microsoft 2007 software for windows to swap.
Thanks.
Guch.
Mango 05-30-2007, 05:29 AM Congrats! Mac OS X is far superior to any Windows product. Not to mention the incredible integration of hardware and software design.
Your best bet is to subscribe to MacWorld magazine, or frequent the website for free. Lots of great tips.
As far as software....well there are TONS of open source (free) apps out there. It really depends what you want to accomplish.
Not to mention, Apple software is CHEAP to buy! Pick up iWork online or at your local Apple store, you won't be disappointed. iWork 08 will be released soon, and it will include Apples version of Excel! I'm very....EXCITE!
yaccster 05-30-2007, 05:50 AM Good choice.
These are some of my favorite mac oriented links:
http://www.macsurfer.com/ - info
http://www.versiontracker.com/ - software
GodfatherSRT8 05-30-2007, 10:00 AM Thanks for the info guys. I am loving how easy it is to send files via bluetooth to my phone as well.
Mango 05-30-2007, 10:42 AM If you buy one peice of software for maintenance on the Mac.... buy c.o.c.k.tail. (I had to circumvent the filter, remove the periods obviously. You will also have to add the proper word to replace the *'s below)

It's a FANTASTIC app for running mainy UNIX utility scripts, all with a pretty GUI. Not only that, it has many other useful function like forcing file persmission changes, deleting stubborn files, etc.
Download it, and run the "Pilot" section to do a routine cleaning of your UNIX system caches and files. It even rotates CRON scripts, etc.
This is a fantastic list of "Essential" apps, you might find something you like.

Many of them are programmer oriented, which is why I found it. Some are not, however.
What will you mainly be using the Mac for?
GodfatherSRT8 05-30-2007, 02:04 PM Nice site mango. Alot of useful software on there. Well right now before I give up on my pc, I want to get comfortable using a mac. This thing is so damn heavy compared to my laptop right now. I have a sony vaio with Vista business on it and weighs 3 pounds, but the battery life on it sucks azz.
Have you ever used microsoft office for macs?? Is it worth the $400.00 or should i stick with Iworks.

Why don't you run a program called Parallels and run all your windows apps on your Mac? That way you won't have to buy Office for the Mac. $79.99
http://www.parallels.com/
Eh2BRUTEh 05-30-2007, 02:15 PM Forgot to mention I'm running both Windows XP and Mac OS on MacBook Pro. I'm living my suggestion. It's the only way to go - best of both worlds.
FastSRT8GC 05-30-2007, 03:04 PM I also run parallels, Great program. Funny thing is windows still gets tons of errors even on a mac. What a crap OS window is. In one month you will be flying around on your mac and never look back.
If you write a lot of documents, spreadsheets, etc. You may want to keep something your used to. But the iWork suite is very nice and just like with all the other software from apple, it works seamlessly with the other programs.
good choice enjoy it!!
Eh2BRUTEh 05-30-2007, 03:18 PM The main reason I'd stay in windows on the Mac is if you are hooked up to a corporate Exchange email server using the Outlook email client. Way easier than having to deal with crappy Mac email client when it attempts to negotiate a connection with your work.
I also just loaded Windows Vista Ultimate and Office Professional 2007 in a third OS container in Parallels so now I have three OS's running. Great move for Apple moving to the Duo Core Intel chip to support this sort of stuff.
Keep your eyes peeled though a company called VMWare is working on a way of simply running your Windows applications on a Mac directly, no need for a middleware piece like Parallels even.
GodfatherSRT8 05-30-2007, 10:10 PM Do any of you use Firefox instead of safari to browse?
FastSRT8GC 05-30-2007, 10:54 PM Do any of you use Firefox instead of safari to browse?
Yes I do.
I was told to run it, don't remember why.
Jred22 05-30-2007, 10:56 PM Mac rocks tits. found that out about 6 months ago and will NEVER go back.
Eh2BRUTEh 05-31-2007, 07:07 AM Do any of you use Firefox instead of safari to browse?
I use Safari, Firefox and Camino on the Mac side and Explorer and Firefox on the Windows side. I'll have the red site open in my Mac Window (on a 30 inch Mac Monitor) driven by my MacPowerbook and then on the actual Mac laptop screen the orange site running on Explorer in Windows. I have not had any major downside issues with any of the browsers listed. Comes down to personal preference in my view.
As for "Mac rocks tits" in the post above, is that like "Rock Paper Scissors"? Time may be passing me by - but then again as my daughter keeps telling me - "Dad you've got to keep the pimp hand strong". Sigh.
SI_G35Coupe 05-31-2007, 08:31 AM i know it's weak.... but i'm a solitaire junkie and the fact that OSX doesn't include it like windows irked me...
check out Solitaire XL.... http://lavacat.com/
i also downloaded "Nestopia" for my MacBook Pro, it lets you play classic nintendo NES games on the laptop
Mango 05-31-2007, 09:11 AM OS X does not have Solitaire....but it DOES come with a 3D checkers/chess/tic tac toe game with animations, full audio, etc.
:)
Again....superior in every way! No more .dll hell and it's a dream for media users and professionals alike.
I do keep my windoze rig around for games.
