Anyone knows the type of plastic that our bumper is made of. I'm going to attempt to fix a small split on the very bottom of the bumper.

LOL That's what I did! It really did work great. I brought the plastics sticks and there are three different types. I used the black. I welded it this morning. Almost completely sanded this afternoon. And placed my order for SEM adhesion promoter, rubberized primer, base, and clear with flex tonight. I also found a nice plastic rivet kit at Harbor Freight. Thanks tho!

I need to repair a crack on the bottom of my bumper and have been searching for a good how-to on it. Would you mind telling me the steps you used to prep, plastic weld, sand etc...?? It would be greatly appreciated!!

I used a dremel tool to create a nice v groove, sanded area clean with 80 grit. In the previous post I said that I used the black rods in the kit from Harbor freight, but it was the green ones. I put stainless steel tape on the front side while I welded. The welder I used was the one without the built in air assist from Harbor freight. It took some practice on a scrap peice of plastic to get the airflow and angle right. After welding I sanded used some plastic parts glazing compound/ wax and grease remover/ sem adhesion promoter/ prime/ paint x2/ clearcoat. I used my vin to get all paint products from paintscratch .com

I used a regular air compressor with the plastic welder, just turned the regulator down low to 5psi

do not use 80 grit on the bumper except for the area to clean the welding groove. It leaves deep scrstches that will make it very hard to smooth out on the finish side. After glazing I didnt use anything lower than 300 grit.

If you plan on doing the paint work be super sure your area is dust free! And paint in a low humidity enviro, but first practice on scrap. I sanded and painted the grass deflector thing on my lawnmower for practice

Hey thanks for all the advice! I have experience painting parts......I use products from automotivetouchup.com, Im sure its similar to paintscratch.com. But its the actual bumper repair that I am a little weary of.

Couple followup questions:
- From the front of the bumper, I am going line up both sides of the tear (its about a 3-4 inch tear on the very bottom of bumper), and then put the stainless steel tape. Then from the back, use a dremel to create a nice groove where the tear is. Then sand with 80 grit and proceed with plastic weld. Can you supply a link to the exact harbor freight tool you used and also the plastic rods you used? I searched but there are a few options.
- Once the repair is completed on the back part of the bumper, do you use any type of putty or bondo type compound to hide the crack in the front? Or do you just sand the bumper down smooth over the crack and proceed with prime paint clear?

I think thats it for now. Thanks so much for the help

Not sure how it works with plastic, but I have fixed a fiberglass bumper before and it was fairly easy. Pep Boys had these kits you can buy and it came with everything I needed. I used spray cans from www.touchuppaintonline.com to repaint the bumper afterwards.
