As i was leaving work this morning (12am to 8am) as i put my jeep in to drive i heared a knock. I never heard that before, as i started to leave the gate and gave it gas, the jeep started to jerk and only rev up to 3,000 grand in rpms and was in one gear. On the dash wear the gear selection is was all lite up as if it was selected. what the hick is this?????? My drive should be 20 min or so, today it was well over an hour. what could this be? My ride is stock!!!!!!!

PChief,

I saw a thread a while back on this. Try to do a search. I believe it is electical and involves the tranny.

I'm sure someone with the correct reason will respond on this to help.

Good-Luck,

This is an undocumented "we know about it but don't have a fix yet". An on/off cycle of the ignition should clear it.

When it happened were all the gear selections boxed out? I think others have had it fixed w/a TSB(if that's the problem). http://www.wkjeeps.com/wk_tsb.htm

My 06 started doing this about a month ago. It does go away with a restart, but in my case, I have to wait 10-20 min before I restart. If I try a restart right away, the problem re-occurs. I've noticed that it ONLY occurs in warmer weather and after the engine is totally warmed up (city traffic in warmer weather). I installed the Dashhawk about this time, and noticed that the data on the Dashhawk doesn't register PCM data during these episodes (?PCM problem?). Some have speculated it is a PCM/TCM communication problem on start-up. One person resolved the problem by checking all his wiring connections, and found one loose on his PCM. One other person said it might be a poor ground connection between the chasis and the battery. After experiencing it 4 times in the first week, I checked all the PCM connectors (all solid), and cleaned up the ground strap from the battery to the chassis. Since then, it's only happened once over the past 3 weeks (better, but not resolved).

I too would love to have an answer, but I'm afraid that my Dealer is not going to be able to reproduce it until it becomes a repeatable, predictable problem.

I had the same thing happen and posted the question to the SRT Engineers during a recent chat session. Here is the response they sent to me by Private Message. You will see we are not alone....And I still do not have an explanation. I haven't experienced the problem again since I posted this question....But I am keeping their questions in mind in case it happens again.

Your Question:
I know this is a little off topic so feel free to make this low priority. Twice now (just happened again yesterday) when driving my 2007 GCSRT8 I started to leave from a dead stop and the throttle response became very limited/poor. Almost like the jeep didn't want to go over 30mph. The second time I had this occur, I looked down at the instrument panel to find all gear selectors boxed in [P][R][N][D] as if they were all selected. It appears to correct itself if I turn if off and restart. Do you know of any possible causes?

Follow-up questions:
You say this was from a dead stop, but was it after cranking the car or from a stop sign/light? If from a stop did the car drive normally until that point and did you drive over 30mph before then? Trying to determine if problem was there from the time you keyed-up the car or if it developed mid-drive.

If mid-drive, how long into the drive?

Do you recall the weather (temperature, raining, frost on the windows, sunny and 80deg, etc...) outside?

Has anyone ever mentioned something you do "out of the normal"?
- hold the key in crank extra long
- tap the gear shifter back and forth
- fiddle with the window switches
- drive a mail route so sit in the passenger seat while driving (it happens)
- make frequent stops so restart the car 50 times a day
- always notice the problem after putting a big gulp or coffee in the right (could be left) cupholder
- park on a steep driveway
- enjoy "scrubbing-in" the tires while leaving the subdivision
- etc...

We've got this complaint a couple time on the forums now but haven't witnessed it on any of our fleet cars, which makes this hard to diagnose. The fact that you've seen it twice implies it could be vehicle or driver specific. Any info you could provide would be appreciated.

When mine freaked out, I had an error message that popped up on the EVIC both times before the car stalled and shut off. Something about an overheating tranny temp. (No such problem of course) I did find a harness on the PCM that clicked and locked in place when I went checking all the harness connections underneath the hood. This could have been the culprit, but then again maybe not. This harness was on the PCM right in front of the passenger underneath the hood. I have never experienced this again?
