: GC SRT8 Days Are Numbered
JBC 1963 08-22-2010, 02:12 PM First of all, I have the utmost respect for the SRT8 Engineers. They created a Beast with a soild foundation that we (the owners) have modified the performance and appearence of our Rigs to fit our personalities. My concern is that the 2nd gen GC SRT8 will not have enough HP to compete with GM or Ford. With GM installing a S/C on the ZR1 and CTS V, has me wondering what the performance numbers would look like on the new 20?? TBSS whenever it goes into production. We have been kicking TBSS owners *** for the past few years and our pay back day is right around the corner. I know its just speculation but I don't think the 2nd gen GCSRT8 will have enough HP to compete. If the speculation is true, we might not catch up with GM and Ford until the 3rd gen GCSRT8. SRT8 Engineers, please help us help you in having the best pound for pound high performance Beast on the street!!!!
ResumeSpeed 08-22-2010, 02:25 PM ...but I don't think the 2nd gen GCSRT8 will have enough HP to compete...
Compete with what? Why does it matter? It's not all about HP, there is a long list of other reasons for choosing the Jeep. I could care less about what HP other vehicles have, I am more than happy with the package that Jeep gave us and will be even happer with what is coming.
J&D's SRT's 08-22-2010, 02:26 PM Agreed, I think Chrysler needs to step it up & start offering some factory FI motors.
Agreed, I think Chrysler needs to step it up & start offering some factory FI motors.
Or at least beef up the internals so we can safely add larger amounts of boost ourselves...
wink

Details Details. We want details.
I think the current Jeep is one of the best bang for the buck vehicles out there. 4 doors cargo space & leaves most anything under 80k in the dust at a light.
Why are we even comparing a 5000lb suv to ZR-1's and CTS-V's? I think it's pretty damn impressive that we can hang with and even beat most cars on the street. Plus you don't see our SRT8's on every corner. Hopefully we can stay ahead of the Cayenne and X5.

Very true its called HP/WT RATIO.
Next Phase 08-22-2010, 05:02 PM If you want something really fast... don't start with a 5k + lb TRUCK / SUV - IMHO...
Speed = Money... how deep is your wallet. It doesn't matter what comes from the factory if you are talking about modding vehicles...
Emissions and safety will be bring the horsepower number down really soon. We are very lucky to have access to these vehicles.

I wasn't comparing the ZR1 or the CTS V to the Jeep. I was thinking that if GM put the same performance package into the 20?? TBSS that is in the ZR1 and CTS V that the TBSS would certainly out perform the 2nd gen GC SRT8.
WESLEY KAY 08-22-2010, 05:28 PM Chrysler in a whole has to compete with Ford and Chevy....sure. Wes
CentralTexHemi 08-22-2010, 05:39 PM I dont think GM has any future plans to beef up the TBSS but keep putting in the same LS2 motor, it looks like they are focusing on this

tomsws6 08-22-2010, 05:51 PM That would sell like hotcakes! but.............that article is a little old and if they did do it , it would prob get the ls3 that replaced the ls2. Imagine if it was AWD! can someone say syclone????
they havem down under for awhile now. there a little different but........
escham 08-22-2010, 06:36 PM One difference is these are Jeeps. For domestic SUV, there is not a better reputation out there. I dont care if they stuff the ZR1 motor and TT it, if it rides or drives like the current SS you can have it IMO. Fit and finish, Jeep always surpasses the direct domestic competition.
sidehatch 08-22-2010, 08:04 PM uh, the Trailblazer is dead... as in, no longer in production. it has been replaced by the Traverse.
I have not read of any planned Traverse SS... regardless the Traverse is a crossover, and it uses a front wheel drive based chassis (transverse mounted engine, FWD biased AWD system).
I wouldn't worry too much about Chevy going forward in this category...
Jrhaider 08-22-2010, 08:12 PM Regardless to what happens... there is always someone faster than you. Always. If you want the jeep to haul @$$ then throw a blower in it. Do I want the 2nd gen jeep to out perform TBSS? OFCOARSE, but if the TBSS is faster then I would mod my jeep to compete with it if it really bothered me that much.
1BAMFR 08-22-2010, 08:19 PM We should sell our Jeeps and get a Traverse!!!
jntdysf 08-23-2010, 01:04 PM Does anybody know if cash for clunkers is coming back? Hope to get rid of mine while it's still worth something.
mklaus 08-23-2010, 01:55 PM We should sell our Jeeps and get a Traverse!!!
.......... :fight:

DJMightyMouse 08-23-2010, 02:41 PM Jrhaider said it best, there will always be something out there roaming the streets that will spank you up and down the freeway. I'm just thankful Jeep wrapped a well rounded SUV around a mean engine and gave it enough power to keep me in the top percentile when it comes to someone getting squirrely on a Friday night. If you start worrying about what may come or next years model then you should either lease your vehicle from now on, or go buy a crotch rocket so you never loose to another car/ truck again.
Now I've only been the proud owner of an SRT8 for 5 days but if you don't mind I am going back to shopping for a 2011 Traverse... Hahahaha
Tim C 08-23-2010, 02:45 PM At this point I have not heard of GM or Ford having offering a Performance SUV in the next few years.
The Traverse and Explorer while great vehicles are Mommy Mobiles. The Grand Cherokee is far more capable. We can also supercharger the new 5.7L for those wanting more 2011 power.
The only competition Jeep has is with German vehicles (BMW X5M, Porsche etc)

Chris@LPM 08-23-2010, 03:50 PM I just hope they continue the SRT8 line for the Jeep!!
rwboring 08-24-2010, 09:21 AM I wasn't comparing the ZR1 or the CTS V to the Jeep. I was thinking that if GM put the same performance package into the 20?? TBSS that is in the ZR1 and CTS V that the TBSS would certainly out perform the 2nd gen GC SRT8.
typically whatever comes out second is a "step up" because they know what they need to beat...
there is more to it than the motor...
i think the 8speed tranny will help out a TON... and we all saw what happened with a stock "400 horse" TBSS vs a "420 horse" jeep... hell i think the new 5.7 would beat the TBSS by several tenths...
so fast forward... (first off something i learned not too long ago, the ZR1 and CTS V are not the same motor)...
they would more than likely use the 556 horse CTS V motor...
i think if the 6.4 put out 500-525 horse it would be much much closer than you think...
what does a CTS V run with how much weight? slap 5000lbs behind that motor and awd (and if they would use a ****ty 4-speed or 5-speed)... i doubt it would run better than a 12.5
the reason why the SRT beat down on the TBSS stock for stock the first time around is because of the ENTIRE drivetrain, not the motor itself... (and thats one reason they cost more)
kmitch80 08-24-2010, 12:23 PM funny as i was contemplaing why chrysler is behind the curve on my way to work this morning. Not necessarily from the jeep aspect, but more in the sports car aspect. The corvette is dominating both chrysler and ford stock for stock. Fords gt500 is factory supercharged, and rated at 540 hp. chevys camaro ss has roughly the same hp and is yet .5 secs faster corvette is just faster period and really not in the same catagory, so why is the challenger/charger still sitting at 420 and running 13.8 1/4 mile? Yes of course it involves more than just HP, but we still lose the the 1/4 mile battle to ford and
chevy by more than half a second! our jeeps should be in there not the challenger. same motor and yet faster. Chrysler needs to step up with the challenger period if they want to even contend, because right now they're sitting last place.
Now as far as our jeeps are concerned, i am more than pleased with them. They smoke any suv on the road, minus the TT cayenne and TT X5, and we lose just barely. So i agree we need to push the HP to over 500, i think at that rate, we beat them both out. Then new cayenne runs 13.2, hell with just a good tune we beat that. Boh have 550hp, and running what we're running with 420hp and a tune. honestly i think if they bump the new srt8 to 520 or so, we're smokin em and for half their price! And if they put the new 8speed tranny in there, hell our 0-60 is low 4's and 1.4 mile i bet high 12's. I'm very happy with our rigs and HOPEFULLY the chrysler reps read this forum and take note to what the current srt8 owners like and dislike and then make some decisions based on that. That would be the smart thing to do. just my 2 pennies
rwboring 08-24-2010, 12:57 PM so why is the challenger/charger still sitting at 420 and running 13.8 1/4 mile?
what DA are you working with? i think all LX and LC are pretty much advertised at 13.1-13.3... just about where the SS is (and mustang GT)
kmitch80 08-24-2010, 01:36 PM 13.3 according to mopar, 13.6 according to testers. Or so i've read. Ive never driven one or seen any posted numbers of completely stock ones other than whats posted online. chryslers top vehicles are srt8 stamped, chevy's ss stamped (for now until the bad A$$ z28 comes out), ford is GT500. TRUE numbers are, 08 challenger srt8 13.6, camaro ss 12.9, GT500 12.8. Now the new 09 challenger got the viper tranny so i think it runs 13.2. which i didnt know till about 10 minutes ago.

to me the problem with the SRT is still the gearing and tires... hands down...
stang99x 08-26-2010, 05:06 PM This is easy. Beyond a Wrangler, I'd never owned a chrsyler product. I didn't intend on owning one this time either. Ford has nothing to offer in the catagory of performance SUV (in fact, they only delved into the subject one time with the Navigator K which was a blown 5.4 in a 7000lb suv) The TBSS is nothing more than hype without alot of mods. Bottom line for me was, for less than 30 grand I got a 420hp grocery getter for the wife, and a play toy for me on the weekends. You need to think more of where we are now vs where we were 10 years ago. How many factory stock cars came (and i mean cars, not suvs) off the line with over 400hp? Very, very few. The horsepower wars started heating up again in the early 2000's and we are, what honestly appears to be anyway, at the tail end of them due to fuel economy standards. Ford has deleted the V8 from the explorer power plant arsenal, and replaced it with a sh1t 6 and a turbo 4. The first time an explorer has ever had to bear the burden of pulling itself around with a fountain drink size liter motor. Be glad we got what we did.
