: K&N drop in question

After I installed my K&N I found that during cold starts, it would not turn over right away. I turn the key and it sounds like it is about to start, so I let off and it doesn't turn over

Then, it starts right up on the second try. Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening? Is it a problem?

Thanks

Are you sure you didn't unplug or disconnect something by accident?

No, it's a K&N drop in filter. All I did was open the stock air box and replace the stock filter.

I know, but when you opened the airbox, a vacuum line or something may have popped off from somewhere nearby.

Also, how much oil was on the filter? Was it dripping with oil?

I'll take a look to make sure I didn't disconnect something.

It definately wasn't dripping with oil.

Thanks

I agree with Houston. You must have disturbed something else or coincidentally you are having problems now.

I have a K&N drop in. No problems on start up. I agree with the above. Double check your work.

My K&N should be here from Amazon.com tomorrow... I will watch out for that too and let you know.

I just put in the K&N drop in a couple of weeks ago. No problems at all afterward. One of the tubes (5/8"?) that connects to the box came off, but I just reconnected it.

Check vacuum line and the ITA sensor. That is the only possibility.

I checked the 5/8" line that MNBob is talking about (I assume that's the vacum line) and it was connected properly. I'll check the sensor, but I don't think that is the problem. Could the oil from the filter be causing a problem internally upon cold start-up?

Once again, only happens in the morning upon cold start. After sitting in the parking lot all day at work, I don't have the same problem. Very wierd

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the K&N. Are you sure the problem presented itself the first time you started the vehicle after putting the K&N in? If you can't find anything, then I'm guessing that it's a big coincidence. However, you can check for signs of excess oil. Look at the sensor wire on your mass air meter to see if it has any gunk on it. You can also check your IAT sensor for the same thing.

I seriously doubt it is your K&N. Either cooincidence or something slipped when you installed it. To confirm, why not try putting the stock element back and see if there is any change?.

I did my K&N a couple of weeks ago, and only noticed better throttle response and little more top end charge. I'd say it picked up 5 - 10 ponies or so over the stock paper element.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Put the stock "diaper" back in tonight and see if it happens again tomorrow. I'm interested to hear because I just ordered one too. Let us know what goes on when you start it up in the morning. (Don't rush back in to post, you can wait til you get home, I guess  )

I didn't get a chance to change out the filter last night, but it actually started up fine this morning.

I keep an eye on this over the weekend and update next week, but I am sure that it isn't a big deal.

BTW - Anyone gonna be down the S. Jersey Shore this weekend? I'll be in OC NJ through Monday. AHHHHHHH.....the start of another summer!!!!

UPDATE - I never changed out the K&N, but I no longer have the initial start-up problem. Not sure what changed. Maybe my rig needed a little time to get used to the extra airflow

Who knows, but everything is now fine.

So, do you notice any difference? I am with 07blksrt8 in that I think engine seems to run free-er. In fact, I am ready to put the stock one back to see if my mind is playing tricks on me. I think it has been documented that the stock intake is restrictive.

So hard to tell, really. I know, though, that someone here has the dyno numbers, and there was a slight improvement over stock, which makes sense.
