In order to improve fuel economy, look for the next 300 to feature improved aerodynamics, axle ratios and drivetrains. At the heart of the improvements will be Chrysler’s all-new Pentastar V6 engines. The new Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 will replace both V6s currently offered in the LX cars, improving both fuel economy and performance. The new Pentastar V6 should pack about 290 horsepower while offering close to 30mpg on the highway. For those wanting more power, 5.7L and 6.4L HEMI V8s should also be on offer.
But the new Pentastar V6 won’t be the only big news for the 2011 300. Chrysler is also planning to replace the cars’ four and five-speed automatic transmissions with a new eight-speed unit, rivaling Lexus for the most cogs in the business.

Looks like they're replacing both their 4 & 5 speed units with a 8-speed being the only offering, that'll mean that the performance of the 6.4L should improve drastically versus the current transmission.

...not really 8-speeds are not really "drag racer" friendly... more for highway

It's going to be really interesting to see how the new SRT8 actually turns out.

It will definitely be nice getting closer to 20mpg vs 10:D

Great for mileage and highway vacations – yes.
Constantly shifting through the gears when at WOT on a ¼ mile plus run – also yes.
Will be interesting to see indeed.

True, I have a G37 with a 7 speed and i am in like 3rd by the time I am going 30. I don't like all the shifting.

...not really, they've been used to great effect in the ISF which is easily quicker than it would be with a 5 speed through the 1/4

there are also many applications of 7 speeds (granted, many DSG) used to great effect on performance vehicles. the panamera turbo owes its crazy 1/4 mile times as much to its transmission as it does its launch control.

All models of the 2011 300 will have the current 5-speed (W5A580).

The only SRT8 vehicle for the 2011 model year will be the Challenger 6.4L and it will also have the W5A580.

Is there a link to go with here or should I just take your word on it?

I am getting excited!

But I sure as hell hope that's not what the body is going to look like. If they do standard exhaust, no special hood, and no special grille, I will not buy this car.

Pretty cool link Akon.

6.4 manifold looks funky with those reservoirs built in?
Looks like 6-pot brake calipers?
And the front bumper fascia under the camo def looks like our current setup!!!
Just gotta wait on the hood, rear exhaust setup and wheel design.

Anyone else notice how they just took a can of flat black spray paint to the stock gen wheels and its chipping off in multiple spots? Haha

I do not think that this is the final product, they're obviously preparing the engine / transmission to work together in one package. This is a test mule only, for sure.

This is a mule....the body will completely change, including the wheels. As said, this is just a powertrain mule, although the exhaust tips look pretty massive!

lol ya really... your high if you think the 1/4 mile times of the new SRT would benefit from more gears, they are doing it simply for fuel economy, and highway.... gee i wonder why a lot of ppl choose 2 speed tranny's to drop into there drag car and not 7 speeds... the cars u mentioned owe a lot to dsg and high revving engines...take the new Lexus for example, there are some cars with 7 speeds that scream, hell i bet a F1 car would put down a sick 1/4 mile time... the fact is most people on here use the 1/4 drag as there stomping ground and would not benefit at all from 7 gears...

The 8 speed that will be used has shift times said to be comparable to a modern DSG box. Compare the ratios to our current transmission as originally posted by Jim383 here:

TRANS RATIOS.......OVERALL RATIOS WITH 3.73 GEARS & MAX MPH @6200RPM
1st = 4.696...........17.516.....30 MPH - I SEE LOTS OF WHEEL SPIN HERE
2nd = 3.130..........11.675.....46 MPH
3rd = 2.104...........7.847......68 MPH
4th = 1.667...........6.217......87 MPH - BE SHIFTING INTO 5TH IN THE 1/8 MILE
5th = 1.285...........4.793......114 MPH - IN 1/4 MILE 107 MPH@5900 RPM - LOVE THIS
6th = 1.000...........3.73.......145 MPH
7th = 0.839...........3.129......NEVER SEE IT LOL
8th = 0.667...........2.487......SAME HERE

OURS NOW............OVERALL RATIO WITH 3.73 GEARS
Gear W5A580
1st 3.59...............13.390
2nd 2.19..............8.1687
3rd 1.41...............5.259
4th 1.00...............3.73
5th 0.83...............3.095
Reverse 3.16

Whats that mean? More time spent in the meat of the powerband through the 1/4. Whats that mean? A quicker 1/4.

Highway MPG will definitely benefit as will acceleration.

People dropping 2 speed trannys into drag cars are making more power than any readily available 6, 7 or 8 speed can handle. Would you prefer the next SRT8s come with a 2 speed instead? Didn't think so.

Oh? S4 peak hp @ 5k The Panamera Turbo makes peak hp at 6k. IS-F? 6600

6.1 SRT8? 6200. High revving torqueless wonders, the lot of them! :rolleyes:

I think Ive been around these parts long enough to know what we use our trucks for broe.

For 99% of the new SRT8 buyers, we do not care about 1/4 mile times or "drag racing." I would LOVE for it to be more refined, have the 500hp mark, have luxury AND good performance along with better fuel economy. The new 8 speed gearbox will be a huge success.

It is also rumoured to have cylinder de-activation, meaning when not all of the power is required, the glorious V8 will pootle along on 4 cylinders.

Not impressed

Fail.

I traded in my 500hp srt8 Charger that I previously had on this, mainly cause it was just as fast, had some added luxury, and could haul my goaltending and skiing gear – year round in snow.

I would probably say more like ~75% of the people who buy this vehicle buy it for its performance and practicality – like hauling around kids etc that you can’t do as easily in a car .

The remaining ~25% that purchase it may not know or care of the vehicles performance aspect and just buy it based on looks or the whole cool factor to outdo their neighbor or whatever.

I agree an 8 speed could be a good thing for fuel economy and that’s something this vehicle could use. Still though I would bet most of the gen 1 GCSRT8 owners buy this vehicle knowing how bad the economy is, and just don’t care. I did and just increased my monthly fuel budget by $100 over the Charger ;)
