: 2002 Qvale Mangusta DeTomaso vs. Jeep SRT8
jlandbl 05-20-2007, 06:57 PM So I'm at a family party yesterday. My wife's cousin, who is a major car buff, just bought a 2002 Qvale Mangusta DeTomaso Targa Convertible to add to his collection. He was hoping I would have brought the Jeep but we went in my wife's car. He told me he ran into a Jeep SRT8 recently out on Long Island, NY which he was able to pull off 2 stop light races with to about 80mph. The Jeep took him by about 1-2 car lengths both times. He was able to talk to the owner who said a catback and cai were added to the Jeep. I thought you guys would like this story and also, since the Mangusta is so rare, could he have raced someone from this site? This is one you would remember. There were only about 287 of his verison of Mangusta produced. It's a hot looking car with 320 hp good for high 4's to 60.
OurZoo 05-20-2007, 08:48 PM There's a guy that has a yellow Detomaso something? and who brings it to the weekly meets that go on around the corner from my pad. I'm guessing it's something different than you are talking about b/c he had claimed it was the only one in North America.

Yeah, that yellow car is a 98 Guara. I'm not sure how many are in the States. The DeTomaso Mangusta became strictly a Qvale when Qvale & DeTomaso had a falling out (named for American auto importing magnate Kjell Qvale, who basically financed the whole project).
The Guara photo that was posted here awhile back.

Don't really care for it too much...I don't care how rare it is. Looks like a late 80's Ford Probe prototype :D
I can't imagine getting something fixed on that hunk of junk if it breaks either, parts must be expensive and whoever works on it will charge a lot.
Thanks, but no thanks.
Just my 2cnts.
EX.
OurZoo 05-20-2007, 09:55 PM I'm not big on it either my friend. I think he said it had a Cobra engine in it. Belfed, I forgot I posted that pic lol. That's David in the background, dmcdono here on the site. I saw him up there this morning along with Hemi@last.
HoustonSRT-8 05-20-2007, 10:45 PM Yeah, the Mangusta used the '99-01 NA Mustang Cobra motor so getting work done shouldn't be too hard.
The are cool because of their rarity, but not much else.
jlandbl 05-21-2007, 06:03 AM This is not the exact one but the one I'm referring to looks similiar to the atached pictures (which is a 2000 and is on EBay by the way)....
OurZoo 05-21-2007, 08:52 AM I like it better than the local one here, that is for sure.
awdrocks 05-21-2007, 09:01 AM I kinda like it. Thats cool it has the Cobra motor. You could make that thing very fast. The interior looks a lot like a Mustangs. I wonder if it used the same platform as the Stang?
Mango 05-21-2007, 10:38 AM So wait...what is the point of these cars? They're just mustangs with some modding?

Pretty much. I think they weigh a little less as well. Think about it, though, most custom/kit cars are based on production cars.
GodfatherSRT8 05-21-2007, 10:48 AM pretty ugly if you ask me.
HoustonSRT-8 05-21-2007, 10:51 AM I actually like the interior how Qvale covered the Mustang dash in leather. I think that looks really good.

They handle better than a stang, are quicker and have a unique look (and name). It does turn heads. But with 287 total made, don't know how one would replace a body part or something like that. The coolest thing is convertible top or hard top, you choose based on your mood.
