: ABS Freeze
firestarter 05-19-2007, 02:33 PM So, I am driving down the road near my house last night at roughly 9:30 pm. I am going about 20-25 MPH and the conditions are dry. I am on a section of road that is straight. I am driving normally when suddenly the front end (or at least that's what it felt like) seized up and the nose of the truck darts to the right, directly into the curb lining the road.
I bounced off the curb with both passenger side wheels and when that happened the front end "unsiezed". I stop and look at the damage and it appears I just have some serious curb rash on my two passenger side rims. Ok, that sucks but I am still wondering what the hell happened to cause the front to sieze like that. I start it back up and drive the last 3/4 mile back to my house. On the way home, there are no more seizures but my ABS is firing intermittenly (while I am not braking) on the ride home.
Has anyone ever experienced or even heard of anything similar?
AT'sGCSRT8 05-19-2007, 02:39 PM This is the first I have ever herd of that happening. That must have been pretty scary. What year is your truck and how many miles on it?
SpeedRacer333 05-19-2007, 05:22 PM Although this does not sound like it applies to your question, this does remind me to take my rig in for the safety recall for the abs module - "...may cause the rear brakes to lock up during certain braking conditions. This could result in a loss of vehicle control and cause a crash without warning."
Maybe related?
echo412 05-19-2007, 05:38 PM I experienced the same thing when the truck had about 2000 miles on it (11500 now) .. the front right wheel kept locking for half a second or so at very low speed (30 mph) repeatedly for about two minutes or so. I had to stop in the middle of street and reboot the ECU (restarted the truck) ... I haven't had it since then which was last year about this time. very very weird ... It felt like my 350Z when I went from 17s to 19s and the traction control would just kick in for no reason. Oh yeah I remember I even turned off (is it 80 percent off only in the jeeps?) the TC in the jeep and it didn't do anything. So you are not the only one! ..

Now before too many of you go freaking out, if you have not heard of this one, this should be it. For 07's only. Lot's of models......

Holy Smokes...sounds just like it. It happened so fast and so abruptly that I suppose it actually could have been the rear brakes but it is hard to tell.
But let me tell you all this, thank goodness I was alone and only going 20-25 MPH and on a quiet suburban street. If I had been on the highway at full speed I don't think there would be much left of this truck. There was NO way to control this thing.
EX-SVTMAN 05-19-2007, 09:08 PM Is there an abs fuse you can pull in the meantime? That is some scary sh*t!
OurZoo 05-20-2007, 12:37 AM I freaked out when I first heard about it. It just affects 07s build in certain months. Glad you are okay and get them to replace your rims at their cost for sure!

Do you know what months? My 07 was built in March.

My truck is an 07 with 6k on it. I don't know the build date off the top of my head but I will get it later and post it.
firestarter 05-20-2007, 09:56 AM And so, the plot thickens. In my area, there is a guy that owns a sandwich shop and drives a GCSRT8 also. I don't know him well but when I have eaten there we have exchanged stories about our trucks.
This morning I went over to pick up some sandwiches for lunch today and I see him leaving the shop and getting into a new Audi. I am driving my wife's mini-van:mad: . Anyway, I say hello and make a crack about not driving our beasts on Sunday. He says he is glad he doesn't because he wrecked his. I chuckled half-heartedly and say the same thing. He asks me what happened and I explain it to him and then he freaks out and explains the exact same thing happened to him but he was going 50 mph and rolled his. Twice in the last six weeks!!!! The first time was minor like mine but the second time he had his kid in the car.
Anyway, he complained to the Dealer and DCX and they offered to "replace" his vehicle but he wanted to "return" it altogether and they said no. He claims he called the Pennsylvania State Attorney General and that prompted DCX to allow him to terminate his lease early.
I have to admit I am starting to get concerned. I suppose this can happen to any vehicle but this is quite a coincidence?
Does anyone recall getting a letter from DCX about this recall? I don't but I wonder if I threw it away or simply haven't received it?
EX-SVTMAN 05-20-2007, 10:00 AM Dudes, can you imagine if this happens on the highway or while racing? This is some serious sh*t...has anyone asked the srt engineers about this?

Hey Bill,
Are those stock SRT8 rims that you had painted? They look good. can you post a bigger pic?
Blown7 05-20-2007, 11:48 AM On mine the build dates on the drivers door sticker.

THANKS AT....that is a big sigh of relief. All I thought back on was the 100 + runs at Rockingham etc. Good way to really hurt yourself.
Now I can move on with the rear axle swap..:D:D
Again, thanks. I try to be as helpful to you guys as I can. This sure is a great Forum for sharing ideas or lessons learned.
Bill
AT'sGCSRT8 05-20-2007, 03:15 PM No problem sir.:D
limeylee 05-20-2007, 03:19 PM OK, mine has a build date of 3/06.
This has happened to me 2 or 3 times, driving slow 20-30 ish apply gentle breaking and they grind hard and lock. It feels and sounds like the front end.
I have taken it to the dealer each time and they say everything checks out and there is nothing they can do.

I second the thanks AT. Very cool of you to check that for us. This is what this forum is all about- cool guys helping cool guys whenever possible. Thumbs up...if you're ever in my part of town- the First Round is on ME!:)
firestarter, glad it wasn't worse.
I got the recall letter for mine but haven't taken it in yet. I haven't had any locking up issues so far(knock on wood). Really hate taking my car to the dealer. Anybody here had the recall done? I believe it says they reprogram the ABS.

It will be interesting as to what the dealer says tomorrow morning. I have truck coming to take it to the dealer.

Yep, they just flash the abs control module. Shouldn't take very long.
firestarter 05-21-2007, 12:50 PM I have tried contacting Chrysler customer relations. Coincidentally, on their Customer Service Menu (Voice Reponse Unit) they have a special menu for for SRT8 owners. They were "busy" this morning so I had to leave a message. I have tried calling back several times today to no avail.
This is the number I am using: 1-800-992-1997.
Has anyone on here dealt with them in the past and have any suggestions?
Thanks.

What dealer are you going to in SoCal. I've had good experiences at Shaver in T.O. and Star Chrysler in Glendale.
firestarter 05-24-2007, 09:50 AM Udpate: the dealer won't address my problem until an investigator checks it out on Friday.
firestarter 05-25-2007, 10:25 AM Wow. The investigator has checked out my vehicle, driven it, taken pictures of it and inspected it on the rack.
Now, he has told the dealer not to touch it until they hear from him. He says that will be at least one more week. That's two weeks of sitting in the shop. Meanwhile, nobody at Chrysler will talk to me "because a special department is handling the case and they don't have the phone number to it."
Does this sound a little nuts to anyone or am I just expecting too much?
