: SRT Engineers Confirm 15w-50 Best for Racing
jlandbl 05-16-2007, 08:05 PM If 15w-50 Mobil 1 is the best oil for racing it confirms better protection for our engines. I'm switching on the next oil change.

Also, from your perspective, what are the advantages/ disadvantages to using 15w-50 over 0w-40?
SRT Engineer Answer:
"There is no problem running 15W50, in fact it is emission certified. And If you were truely racing the vehicle , it is the only oil Mobil would recommend."
OurZoo 05-16-2007, 09:46 PM How about racing around town in the city and on the freeway, but not at the track? :)
HoustonSRT-8 05-16-2007, 09:53 PM How convenient. I'm due for an oil change this weekend.....
OurZoo 05-16-2007, 10:01 PM I bet if you do push the rig real hard regularly you might just see a very slight increase in gas mileage.

If this grade of oil is more appropriate for racing (or very hard driving) then it means better protection so I'm switching even though I don't hit the track. Any of the folks who hit the track should consider this grade of oil.

How so? Or is this suppossed to be like the SRT Eng response about the brakes (i.e. if you hit them harder you would have no scoring)?
OurZoo 05-17-2007, 07:50 AM I believe I read people were seeing that on one of the LX forums when the oil was used for their TSB.

No difference. In fact, Walmart by me sells 15-50 in 5 gallon jugs for like 22-23 bucks but they don't sell 0-40 in 5 gallon jugs. Both are 5.99 by the quart at Walmart.
slow91 05-17-2007, 10:47 AM Exactly why I went to Mobil 1 15W-50 at my 600-mile first oil change a couple months back....
HoustonSRT-8 05-19-2007, 03:03 PM Any more opinions on this? I'm doing an oil change this evening.
OurZoo 05-19-2007, 06:08 PM I'm gonna switch next time. The dealer I went to yesterday only had the 0-40 and since I had it in for the tranny rings, I just told them to knockout the oil change as well.
awdrocks 05-19-2007, 07:39 PM I did some research on oils right before I switched to full synthetic and learned that Mobil 1 has dropped their grade of oil and are no longer a true Grade IV and V non-mineral stock full synthetic oil. Grade III stock oil is now allowed to be called synthetic oil in the US, and is what Mobil 1 is now using. I'm staying far away from Mobil 1.
I went with Pennzoil Platinum for my first oil change just because its going to take a little time to get what I really want, Amsoil. Pennzoil Platinum is a Group V oil. My next oil changes will be with Amsoil and their oil filters, they are true Group IV and V stocks. Better to get it mail ordered.
Redline is also a great alternative.

All of this is good reading, but.......if the Chrysler group uses it and recommends Mobil 1 in our vehicles including my former SRT-10...then I'll continue to use it because if the motor goes, it's their dime.
synoil 05-20-2007, 05:25 PM While it is true that Mobil 1 has changed some of their formulas
to group III and legally calling them "synthetic", not all of their
products have changed. I believe the 0W-40 is a group IV as is
some other Mobil oils.
I am running Amsoil European 5W-40 in mine which is a true PAO/Ester
oil.

Mango 05-20-2007, 06:11 PM My neighbors work at the Mobil Oil Plant here in south jersey, home of Mobil 1. You wouldn't BELIEVE some of the vehicles they have testing there. A bunch of multi million mile BMW's, Mercs, old Fords/Chryslers/etc.
All running on Mobil 1.

I did it February 2006.........but was told I'd seize the motor up.........vindication is so sweet.

Perfectly ok with me ;)
Just some info I wanted to share, to each their own :)
Scientifically speaking its a lower grade oil, and more contaminating for your internals... Not trying to manipulate you, just informing you.
Just because they have big deals with manufactures doesn't mean they have the best oil, very far from it. Its like saying tap water is more purified than distilled water, distilled water is cleaner, its a fact, just like Grade III is a less refined oil then Grade IV and V.
All of this is good reading, but.......if the Chrysler group uses it and recommends Mobil 1 in our vehicles including my former SRT-10...then I'll continue to use it because if the motor goes, it's their dime.
This is obviously a touchy subject for some. Don't know why. I daut your warranty contract obligates you to use Mobil 1 to validate your warranty, but if they do, I don't know what to say. As long as you hit the required maintenance check points you will be fine. So if the motor goes, it won't matter what kind of "synthetic" oil you used, the warranty will cover you
But what determines the grade of oil I use in my motor, isn't determined by the fact that I know that someone will fix it for free, its determined by the fact that I know its the healthiest for my motor.
No "Mobil 1" today is Grade IV - V. Someone correct me if im wrong.
Anyways looks like this made some waives and where not my intentions.
Good hunting!!!

No worries. That's what's great about this forum. Sharing information and using it suits you or your driving habits. Thanks for the thread.
millers_srt 05-25-2007, 11:46 AM what about mobil 1 extended performance 15w-50? i'd like to squeeze a few more miles out of each oil change.
