Coming from driving an RT with a 5.7 Hemi having the NAG1 transmission, I was wondering what was different about the W5A580 trans on the GCSRT8, since it uses the same dipstick and has the same 5 speed auto setup, what are the differences besides being beefed up? and how much stronger is the W5A580?
Just curious, thanks!

It's the same transmission, the only difference being software.
The NAG1 automatic transmission is an electronically controlled 5-speed transmission with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. The ratios for the gear stages are obtained by 3 planetary gear sets. Fifth gear is designed as an overdrive with a high-speed ratio.
NAG1 identifies a family of transmissions and means “N”ew “A”utomatic “G”earbox, generation 1.
Various marketing names are associated with the NAG1 family of transmissions, depending on the transmisson variation being used in a specific vehicle.
Some examples of the marketing names are: W5A300, W5A380, and W5A580. The marketing name can be interpreted as follows:
W = A transmission using a hydraulic torque converter.
5 = 5 forward gears.
A = Automatic Transmission.
580 = Maximum input torque capacity in Newton meters.

Good info thanks, what's the NAG1 torque rated at? the one for the 340HP 5.7L?

the 6.1 swap idea
What the hell do you think I'm hanging around here for? if I wasn't serious about it I wouldn't be on this forum every day.
If I didn't still owe $9,000 on my RT, I would have sold it or traded it in and gotten me a 2007 GCSRT8 6+ months ago, I missed a good one 3 months ago, local, black with Nav, 20,000 miles and the dealer wanted $30,000:eek:, I went there to look at it and it had already been sold.
I'm tired of my RT, it looks good and gets 23mpg on the hwy, but power is OK at best, 0 to 60 sucks at 6.2 secs, traction sucks, ground clearance sucks, visibility is not great, so I can't wait to upgrade to a GCSRT8 to fix all that, and my city gas mileage on my RT is 11 mpg, and I very rarely drive on the hwy so fuel economy won't affect me.

So, if the NAG1 is the "new gearbox", did they change the names when they put them in the '06+ LX cars?
