: Wilderness Cruise Ideas
Hey gang,
How about we get a wilderness cruise planned? Don't have a time or place yet, but want to make it as agreeable to as many members as possible. Weekends would seem the most logical, but we might need to adjust around work schedules. I'm thinking a Sunday probably. As for routes, it's wide open, but here's a few to get things started...
(A) Simple - Up Lookout Mountain. There's a big parking lot up top. Downside is lots of traffic and too many of those damn bicycles. There's a little cafe at the Buffalo Bill center.
(B) Golden Gate Canyon Park. Nice little cruise. Usually fairly light traffic the times I've driven up that way. No restaurants I know of, but there are picnic areas if we want to being sandwiches or something.
(C) Coal Creek Canyon Park. Similar to (B) but might be a bit more traffic. There is a restaurant up in WonderVu, but I've never tried it.
(D) Out 6 towards Black Hawk. Guaranteed the most traffic, but restaurants, casinos etc.. once we get there. Haven't been yet myself.
Don't know the areas further south.
Ok your ideas...

robpp 05-02-2010, 01:07 PM I like to take the interstate up to Idaho Springs. good BBQ joint up there. could be other stuff. or even the market for a hoagie and sit by clear creek and eat.
then you leave like you were going up mt evans. but you just go to the lake 'echo lake i think its called. then you dont go all the way up top where you have to pay, there is another road, foget the #, that takes you all the way down to morrison. or make the whole loop and eat in morrison???
theres a million. we should figure out a nice lunch place up in the hills and then we can plan a nice route to and fro.
as for dates, i know we are all freaks with weather, so lets remember HAIL season is here. and it happens earlier the higher or west you are. like foothills has noon-2 storms. city gets them from 2 to about 5. but im sure we are all amatuer weathermen by now.
so where some of you natives..........you must know the real good places.......lets go to have lunch with Joe ****er. Mad dogs and Englishman,

Farthest I've been out 70 is Genesee, but I've wanted to drive further up into the mountains. That looks like an all day cruise though... Looks like 70 to Idaho Springs, then 103 to Echo Lake. It hits 74 and you could either go north, like I would, back to 70, or south to Morrison for most of you.

Driving down the road today. Sun shining bright. And it started snowing on me. Did it twice in a 20 minute period. Goofiest dam weather in this state. Hell even NOAA hasn't been close to right the past two weeks...

Is he living up here? Note: The nanny features on this site are ludicrous when you can't even put a famous singer's name in your post. Fail!

robpp 05-02-2010, 04:13 PM a little google shows its long gone, closed in 03, plus it was in like telluride LOL
takes about an hour or less for most to get to idaho springs. its about 30 minutes to the lake from there. then 74 yeah, to morrison or home for you. it takes about 30 40 minutes to get back down to Morrison via 74, maye a bit longer. but not all day. but a good 4-5 hours with lunch and picture opps.
i dont know totally why but i get obsessed with the weather. well 14 years at the airport working in in it and about 25 years riding hogs in it. maybe that explains it....or at least justify it. and yeah, the weather, just like 2 weeks ago, you wake up, ALL the weather says 'slight chance of a t-storm. no severe weather today because of zzzzzzzzz. 1 in the afternoon_______gee that storm looks nasty rolling off the hills. 30 minutes later SPC out of Norman, Tornado Watch till 9 tonight, Hail, etc. funnel clouds spotted, hail like snow, a few tornadoes. WTF.
wait till you see them using the front end loaders on a hail storm its so deep.
I finally settled with state farm on my Hail damaged roof from last june twister and hail.
wait....i just looked at the five-day: high of 40's on thurs fri and 40% chance of snow.........these are the fun snowstorms. if your trees have leaves on them, then add 6-10 inches heavy wet snow.........look out BELOW....

I'll take your word for it. Just the little I've cruised in the foothills, the speed limits and traffic have made a mile stretch out a lot longer than they should.

It's funny, but the cold is what made the boss wait 7 years for me to move up here. It bothers me the least. Hurricane force winds took siding off my house the first year. The street and my yard disappeared the second year under a layer of hail. Then came the blizzards. I hate that white crap most of all! Doesn't seem to rain out here that much though. But we have tinder box grass in the summer, tornadoes all the time out east, hundreds of fault lines... Pretty much the top 10 of extremes... ;)
Always wondered about the new cars at dealerships when the hail passes through...

What's p!ss!ing me off is they're talking rain and snow Wed night. To blow $30 or not to blow $30 at Bandi. That is the question...

I really like this cruise idea! I'll keep checking in to see what the details are, you know I'm in.

Sounds good Mike! We need some more input so we can flesh out the idea...

downstate 05-02-2010, 09:02 PM Oh it's all good - i'm kinda short so I never really see the roof unless I'm giving the Jeep a bath :)
I like the cruise idea, anywhere is fine for me - I'm not a local so I don't all the hidden gems around here.
Just noticed Rob's track day idea, when is hail season less likely to hit us? It would be funny to see a photo of the group hiding under a bridge in the middle of a crazy storm though LOL
bobsegar 05-04-2010, 10:31 AM Hey Mike, are you going to Bandi on Wed.? I will be there with my sons and
both the freshly blown Srt-8 and my 96 SS Camero (also Vorteched)..:D

bobsegar 05-04-2010, 01:30 PM Sorry Wink..........lots of Mikes, my bad.
We met Downstate Mike at Bandi late last year, nice guy.
I have a blue Jeep like Downstate Mike's and have not ran it yet since
having the Vortech kit installed. We look forward to meeting you.

No problem! Most know me as wink anyways. Yeah Mike is a great guy! I'm sure you'll see him out there once he gets his hood. I'm anxious to see how the Vortech does against our altitude.
I'll be looking for your Jeep. Mine's a silver 2010.

Sorry to hear that Daren. Was looking forward to meeting you and seeing that blower. But 000000000000000 beats my 14.4. So you're still ahead. ;) See you next time... I'll try to represent, but I maybe the only Jeep out there. Maybe Grant and Travis will show up...

SSUVette 05-07-2010, 10:00 PM Just throwing it out there that I am down for a wilderness cruise if you don't mind having a TBSS along. Just let me know when and where. I'm not currently working (quit the job I quit my job for on Monday) so I'm around.
