: 6.1L mods after Challenger debut ?
Razorecko 05-02-2007, 04:55 PM Can we expect that maybe we'll have a solid aftermarket coming into play when the challenger comes out ? I mean if that car comes out and has no aftermarket than they would have just killed the life of the challenger. Or maybe Dc will let out the secret code we've all been looking for after the debut when they would be able to profit off of it more ? ...guess time will tell.
Jred22 05-02-2007, 05:45 PM When does the Challenger debut? Soon i hope.
I sure hope someone gets a true tune soon. Chally release ~4/08.

I hope to have my user programmable electronics up and running within 60 days certainly.

So Bill your going to use the DC PCM and piggyback a tunable controller?
Sounds like the best option that the Jeep may ever have if thats the case.

Jeff,
The 426 stroker will be disassembled next week and the new tone wheel installed on the crank with sensors (screw into stock location in the block). Yes, the programmable piggyback (which makes the FAST system look pretty basic) will be plugged into a stock (or B&G) PCM port. This also has complete data logging capabilities. Pretty stock looking setup, not a bunch of extra wires etc.
I believe that this will hopefully solve a lot of issues the guys now have with cams that cause stalling and other problems that are not shared with us.
I am thankful to guys like GCulver that alerted me to some of the cam related problems that are NOT openly discussed here.
I am keeping my fingers crossed, of course this is exactly what the SRT engineers or DC did NOT want us to do to these vehicles. Hate to see this brought up in the next chat!

Why is that?

Houston,
Not sure why some people would not share the downfalls of some of their mods. Heck, I have a garage full of crap that did not work for one reason or another. At least I feel that someone will be helped through all of this instead of people installing mods like "426 installed, not yet tuned" etc. What the hell does that mean? You spent a lot of good money for a 426 and it gave you only a couple of tenths due to "not able to tune"? How is the gas mileage etc, I'll bet not too good. However my engine and electronics turn out, at least I report it. This will help you guys whether the package works or not. This is why I openly reported my 426 putting out good HP and Torque numbers up to our shift point with a stock cam. It sure would be a very drivable combo for the next 100,000 miles.
With the install FAST is doing with the cam and heads, do you think he is the 1st to run into problems?
At least with his honesty, guys from here on (hopefully the part time vendors also) will start checking things before shipping or installing. Thankfully he had an installer that would check the clearances BEFORE there were problems.
I'm still not sure with all the cam installs out there that there is not a thread on this to help others. Cam "A" be careful it idles so poorly that it will barely run at 750 rpm, Cam "B" will load up on deceleration and potentially stall, Cam "C" throws codes.etc,etc.
I read about my converter from the General 1st....great mod, however it will NOT help your et due to excessive tire spin. At least I was informed when I made my purchase and found exactly the same thing and reported it to the Forum.
Houston, I am confused also why some don't post their findings, good or bad.

LOL,
I am lucky that they caught all the problems. The good thing is the ASM kit will be here before its put back together. SO two birds with one fast Jeep.
Bill, and others. It upsets me to no end that a select few are willing to share EVERY bit of info we get to help the next. Then you have other that will hold on to their info like its the GOLDEN TICKET (willy wanka). To have an open forum like this to share and help people is excellent but only if everyone contributes.
My pennies
BuilderBill 05-08-2007, 03:17 PM This is EXACTLY what I am talking about to keep the guys ready to buy cams out of trouble!!!

Blown7 05-08-2007, 06:15 PM Did someone say cams????
Ah Cams.
My thoughts are this, the people that are on these forums are so hungry for aftermarket mods that I think they will buy almost anything.
I'm not saying that somefolks aren't educated just so frustrated in not getting aftermarket support that the latest and greatest post by a vendor gets the masses fired up like sharks smelling blood.
With that said, lets talk cams.
The first post by PPP gave names, big deal, not one cam card.
Whats the lift? Duration, Overlap, Lobe centers?
Hydraulic, Roller???????????????????
Not one professional engine builder even considers the cam UNTIL they decide what the mission profile of the engine is.
Then you build the ENGINE around the CAMSHAFT.
The cam sets the head flow, compression ratio, all the parameters.
I do build engines, all types, aircraft, experimental, N/A ,14-71 Blowers, all the machine work, I figure what I need in a cam then do the legwork.
Ok Rant off.
Bill from what I have chatted about with you on PM your going about it the correct way.
Until these engine are individually tunable, cams and flashes are throwing money away for a couple tenths and a few miles an hour.
The 6.1 Bill has, sounds about right for displacement verses HP but you shouldn't have to spin them to 6K plus to get it.
The faster you spin the engine the faster it wears.
Then ask the cam manufacturers what the best cams are, you'll get a different answer from each manufacturer.
So lets see the cam cards then discuss whats the best.

Jeff,
I believe you are on to something. Guys, lets push the cam vendors for the specs and SHARE the info on a new thread. We are light years ahead of some of the others...lets get this to a different level so guys are not wasting money on crap that doesn't work. Really, this is more like some of the Mercedes Forums (General, I'm sure you have been on those also) than LX etc. That is a hell of a complement!
Bill
HoustonSRT-8 05-08-2007, 07:58 PM Why are they being so secretive with the cam specs? Is it that they are afraid people will copy/steal their designs?

That'll be $12.95 per year.
Blown7 05-10-2007, 04:46 PM Well I went over to the LX forums and called PPP out, got some long winded reply about there cams are gonna be so good, everyones going to want to copy them. I don't know if they are that good but anyhow.........
Today The Hemi Shop started a thread that they also are going to custom grind cams and they will post the numbers soon.
What company would you buy from?

Good work again Jeff!
I believe it looks like the HEMI shop (I have never heard negative about them) is a much more honest vendor that would like to work with us! There is so much in the works, I would like to see someone like that benefit.

Scott(Hemi shop) and I have talked on many occasions, between Stu, Scott and others, I believe some new cam profiles will benefit us JEEP 6.1L owners. It's early in the game, it's all about R&D at this point, but I do think the Hemi shop will produce some quality stuff,IMO GC
