: Who does their own wrenching?

How many of us wrench on our own rigs? I know there are a bunch that do the regular oil changes and stuff. I'm asking who does their own installs for cams/heads/headers/etc...
Just curious....

I have done heads, cam, intake, exhaust work on previous cars/trucks but have yet to do the work on the Jeep with the exception of the thermostat, and CAI.

I do all my own wrenching. It's amazing in the little time I've owned it what I haven't had apart!

Need another option... Like I do the little stuff on my own. (intake, tStat, exhaust) but I would pay someone to do stuff like headers, cam ect...

On the Goat, I've installed headers, blower, clutch, shifter, rear end swap, suspension, and all fluids changed. Only work that hasn't been with my own hands (or those of my buddies during install parties) is the tune. I don't have the knowledge or software to do that. I plan on doing all the work to the Jeep as well. I'd hate to pay someone for work I can do myself, plus it's a great feeling of accomplishment to build it yourself. With the group of car guys I am involved with, about the only thing I'd farm out is the building of a short block or gear change. We've put in cams, heads, intakes, exhaust, clutches, superchargers, turbos... just about anything.

ive build/rebuilt several motors, trannys, rear ends, etc...

front turbos to short blocks to vinyl interiors :)

i can remember sitting in classes during college (if i wasnt sleeping) figuring out what gear ratio would work the best with the cam/tranny set-up i had...

Its not like me but i paid someone to do it. When i owned My 07 Frontier i did everything. As a Army Soldier Im fortunate enough to work on a military base that has a shop with all the tools i could possibly need :) . It makes sense to do it yourself if you can cuz you get to know your beast alot better. You get to see what makes it tick and how things work.

Depends on how patient you are going to be when I get heads and cam. Would like to do it myself but need your expertise. Otherwise I have done all fluid changes, valve body, brakes and exhaust(not headers) myself. Hell I even put on someones exhaust on in your driveway.

I love wrenching on mine.

TwistedGoat said it best: "I'd hate to pay someone for work I can do myself"

Plus you know it's done and double checked, all 100% no shortcuts and you didn't pay someone to do a half-ass cobble job!

Let me know when, I'll take some calm pills. LOL. It's a great experience and really not that difficult.

Hey I think we can learn on my Rig with the Heads and the Cam Eric! That way you show me and Chad how a real Tech does it;) Right Chad? LOL! I have done some wrenching, but never any thing internal to an engine. Have pulled Motors, installed motors, clutches, and trannies, but never Heads or a Cam.

minor stuff and some electronics soldering and gauge install stuff. Have helped on heads and exhaust work, despite douchebag allegations to the contrary. Thing is, I'd prefer a guy who does it every day and already knows what size what nut is rather than try to replicate another man's specialty. You have to trust that specialty, but that's the reason we have specialized crafts and trades, so that you're not trying to replicate the tool capital or remember which way to pattern the torqueing sequence on a set of heads or constantly refer to the torque specs for any particular item. There are people who do it in their sleep and know toque specs from memory and know install and removal sequences. Let them do it. Makes the world go round.

I have done all my own work so far. I did the lowering springs, VB, exhaust, a/f gauge, all fluids, spark plugs, etc. I planned on installing the vortech myself but now that I'm going heads/cam I need to do a little research as I would hate to do the work without a service manual.

I don't trust dealers at all or about 85% of the other techs/mechs enough to do the work for me....seen too many f-ups from even seasoned techs. Plus the satisfaction of doing it yourself is well worth the trouble.

My main issue is time.......I don't have much of it when I have more mod money to spend :D

The Jeep is the first vehicle that I've paid shops to install parts on.

If I have the tools I will do what I can... Or try to rent them. To me that is all part of having a performance ride. I have bad trust issues when it come to other people they dont care its not their car.

I haven't been to involved with the Jeep yet, but have yanked and rebuilt a few motors. (Dak R/T, Mustang, Lightning) With help of my friends and some beer of course! If you can read, you can learn how to do almost any mod to your ride. That's also another reason why these forums are so helpful. There is always someone who has an answer.

I've done all the maintenance stuff on the Jeep. Done a lot of suspension installs on the LXs but the Jeep is easier. Oh, and helped ekaz a bit on some engine stuff...;)

My main problem is I don't trust myself... And I need the correct tools...

The biggest jobs I have done so far is painting my calipers, installing a cai, and hooking up hid fogs... Other than that I have issues trusting myself... I don't even wanna pop off the intake manifold cuz I'm worried about that one fuel line, or whatever it is that you need a special tool for

I just need someone at my side to help me out with pointers...

I do the little stuff.........

Before I had kids and a wife I worked on all my previous cars.

But never heads, cam, etc (Left that for the pros)

I enjoy the late night garage projects with some beer and buddys

No Jeep here, but I do pretty much everything I can on my Vue. I paid to have the timing belt done by a Honda dealer tech (it's got a Honda engine). Had never done one, and really didn't want to screw it up and brick my engine. Something like that, I'd rather pay to have done by a pro.

Everything else is me though. Do my own oil now, all the electronics and stereo crap is all me (it'd be pretty bad if I wan't, I mean, that's what I DO at work, lol). Did my brakes, try to do as many fluids as I can myself, still haven't decided on if I'm going to try the suspension stuff myself.
